When the temperature soars, playing in the pool is a natural, and pool toys are a critical piece of the pool puzzle. The options are endless: squirty ones, floaty ones, sinking ones, ones that move on their own, nets, games, gems, and balls, just to name a few that encourage children to play with parents, with each other, and sometimes even all by themselves. Whatever kind you choose, pool toys made of waterproof materials constructed to stand up to chlorine so they won’t mold or disintegrate in the water.
A note of caution: Whenever water and young children mix, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that an adult is always carefully supervising. Parents should stay within arm’s reach of infants, toddlers, and children who can't swim while in the water, says the AAP, and swim and water preparedness lessons are a good idea starting at age 1, and are a must for age 4 and up. There are so many toys out there that picking one or a few is a little dizzying, and though pool toys are inexpensive, subtle differences from one to another can make them either frustrating or lots of fun. Of course, we wanted to find the toys that sparked joy for families with kids of all ages, so we started our search in BabyCenter's Community, searching through millions of comments from parents to find the pool toys they use themselves, and recommend to each other.

Diving toys have been the go-to pool toys for generations, and this collection of seven different diving faves rings our chimes because of its variety. It has diving rings, diving sticks, diving gems, fish, seaweed, and sharks, as well as two squirty blowfish that float on the water so even new swimmers can play the "swim to get it" game.
The diving sticks and rings stand up on the bottom of the pool so they're easy to grab: some kids even like using their feet to retrieve them. It's all enough to keep a whole neighborhood of kids entertained for long afternoons, reasonably priced.

Since they sink and are small, only use these toys with older kids who are strong swimmers and aren't tempted to put the gems in their mouth as they're small enough to be a choking hazard.
Bring basketball to your backyard with this backboard and rim specifically engineered to withstand pool play. It has a fast set up with a weighted base for that stays put on the side of the pool while players leap out of the water to dunk. Play one-on-one games, separate into teams, or just practice skills solo with this excellent addition to any backyard pool.

Throw it with the overhand movement you use to throw a dart and the Sharkpedo sails through the water for an impressively long time, up to 40 feet. Then it's up to one player to go retrieve the Sharkpedo, and another to make another toss to see if they can beat the first player's distance. It's clear when one player's turn ends and another's begins, so this game discourages bickering, and swimming after the toy to throw it again gives everyone some solid exercise.
Little children will find the dart-throwing motion difficult; save this one for school-age siblings.
