Dear Sir/Madam,
Please consider this letter as a SOS demand regarding a heart-braking situation of a teenager Nikita Zolotoriov who is imprisoned in inhuman conditions in the detention facility SIZO #3 in Gomel, Belarus. Nikita was only 16 years old when he was arrested on August 11, 2020 for participation in a peaceful demonstration against a fraudulent presidential election in Belarus. He was beaten by riot policemen and later by jailers so badly that he ended up in the intensive care unit. Guards did not even allow Nikita’s father to see him in the hospital or in the detention facility. Nikita suffers from epilepsy and needs prescribed medication to treat his condition, but jailers deprive the boy of any medication, that dangerously affects his health. In a letter Nikita sent home from a jail he wrote: “They beat me every day. They do not call for a doctor when I am sick. They say I will die here”.
On February 22, 2021 Nikita Zolotoriov was sentenced for 5 years in the colony for young offenders for allegedly throwing Molotov’s cocktail to the riot police. It was a forged case against the teenager as there was no evidence of Nikita’s wrong doing presented in the court and Nikita refused to confess that he possessed and threw a bottle with flammable liquid. Despite of all this, he was adjudged guilty and remained in the detention facility waiting to be transferred to a colony for young offenders. All this time he complained about brutal treatment, battery and humiliation by guards, as well as denial of medical assistance. This was done to Nikita with the only reason one can think about - to humiliate the boy and make his life in detention unbearable.
Recently Nikita was accused of allegedly attacking a detention guard and trying to choke him. This is such an obvious nonsense that a 16- year-old boy weighing only 45 kilograms can assault a professional jailer. Nevertheless, Nikita is menaced with the second criminal case for this.
We have plenty of evidence that detention guards feel impunity and have an absolute power over detainees, and they can do anything to the prisoners, including humiliation, rape and killing. If we are not acting quickly and do everything possible to stop them it might be late. Nikita Zolotoriov’s story is an example of critical violation of human rights. And here we are talking about a teenager, who is only 16 years old. No one deserves such treatment, especially a child.
We urge you to take immediate action regarding those violations toward Nikita Zolotoriov. We call on you to contact Belarusian authorities and demand providing human rights and medical help to the teenager, and set him free, as he is innocent. People are helpless in hands of the Belarusian regime, and we might be their only hope! Please help us to save Nikita!
