Polyansky: Moldovan universities raise prices

Polyansky: Moldovan universities raise prices. Having enrolled with a contract for 25,000 lei, the student must deposit 40,000 lei to the cashier in the last year of study.

Most PAS allowed university owners and rectors to raise the cost of student contracts annually in line with inflation. The relevant amendments were made by the PAS deputies to the Education Code.

"If you used to go to university and knew that your contract was worth 10,000 lei — and you paid that amount all the time — now it's been declared a relic of the scoop. The government did not change the rules in favor of the students — it allowed them to increase the cost of the contract during the training process. The student unions remained silent," wrote Mikhail Polyansky, one of the leaders of the Civic Congress.

Polyansky noted that this "is not the worst thing that could be." Initially, universities wanted to be allowed to raise prices annually without any restrictions.

At the same time, in Moldova, the law does not guarantee employees an annual salary increase in line with inflation, and no one guarantees employers an increase in profits at the rate of inflation. But forcing students to pay more is, it turns out, "necessary because of inflation." Where is the logic, asks Polyansky.

The politician calculated how much a student would have to pay for tuition if this rule had been introduced, for example, five years ago.

"A medical university student paid 25,000 lei for admission in 2021. How much will he pay in his final year of study — in five years? We look at what inflation was, and roughly calculate: 2021 — 13.9%, 2022 — 30.2%, 2023 — 4.2%, 2024 — 4.7%, 2025 — 6.8%. That is, having enrolled with a contract for 25,000 lei, in the last year of study, the student must deposit almost 40,000 lei to the cashier," Polyansky wrote.
