I have been a long time user of the Polar V800 watch. This has been their flagship model for a while until the Vantage was introduced. I researched the Vantage for a little while and the features it had over the V800 were very enticing. These included Recovery feedback, wrist-based optical heart rate tracking (so workouts in the water could work without a chest strap), and continuous heart rate monitoring (for better calorie tracking over the day). When my V800 wrist strap broke, I put it away in my closet and took the plunge on purchasing the Vantage V. After wearing this watch for a week, I've been disappointed on many counts after comparing this watch to my V800: 1) Accuracy of the optical sensor is really bad. I compare readings between my chest strap and the wrist measurements, and they are usually off by 10-20 BPM, even when my watch is snugly fit. Walking briskly, the wrist readings are usually about 10 bpm higher. For transient events like powerlifting, it grossly underestimates my heart rate by about 20 bpm. 2) GPS tracking can be way off. I've included an image of a GPS trace from Strava for my 2nd of two runs with the Vantage V. You can see that the second lap of two laps is very misaligned with the first lap. Subsequently, my pace was grossly overestimated based on the extra distance that was covered. 3) They omitted GymLink reception from this watch, which the V800 had. Bluetooth does not work underwater but the 5khz GymLink analog signal does, which is what transmitters such as the H10 and T31 chest strap broadcast. So athletes who want accurate underwater heart rate measurements are out of luck here. Returning this watch was a no-brainer for me. I got the V800 repaired and am satisfied again. The V800 is a far superior watch as far as functionality goes. I rate the Vantage V high for it's style and potential, but as far as the latter goes, Polar has a bit of work to do to realize it.

Polar needs a bit of work on this one. Recommend the V800 still for serious athletes.

I purchased the Polar Vantage V to replace my ill and failing Garmin Fenix 3. I liked my Garmin but decided to buy the Vantage V, largely because I’ve had excellent experience with Polar HR monitors in the past and I was happy to see Polar step forward with a full feature training tool. The case of the Polar Vantage V is handsome and well designed. The buttons are low profile enough that they don’t get caught on sleeves, pockets etc. The strap is very well designed, it has some stretch so that the watch remains snug against your wrist. My Fenix was either too tight or loose. The Polar fits like a glove thanks to the stretch, what a simple fix. One of the key features that really appeal to me is the running power function. I’m not sure if other brands have this but this is a great feature and adds another data point that enables more accurate training. I've used power meters for years in my cycling. To have it now for running is fantastic. The Vantage V has touch screen technology that is useable during normal daily use but is turned off during training. This is a smart choice since touch screens can malfunction during training (sweat, rain, inadvertent swipes etc). The data fields can be customized and there is no shortage of info that can be accessed. I really like the all-day HR function, it gives a very accurate calorie burn and sleep data. This is a serious training tool and Polar is back with a top-notch watch that competes if not beats anything else on the market. Couple this with the Polar Flow App and there is nothing missing. This watch is very solid with its current software. Polar has multiple firmware updates coming and, according to Polar, screen brightness and phone notification data will be available soon. Polar is back and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

We have owned a variety of Polar, Fitbit and Wahoo fitness devices and bicycle gps/hrm tracking computers. We've used Polar, Wahoo and Garmin chest strap heart rate monitors for years. With that experience, my wife loves her Polar Vantage V sport watch. She finds the Vantage V easy to use with plenty of battery life. The heart rate function is quite accurate - when she wears the Vantage V and her chest strap HRM at the same time, the heart beat readouts for both are the same or are very close. The Vantage V's charger works well, and the touch screen works well. We've always felt Polar Flow offers the best online, web-based data presentation, and Polar's Flow mobile app does a great job of presenting your data. We were concerned that the overall size of the Vantage V might be big for a woman's wrist, but actually it looks fine and the large display makes the data more legible. We did order the small "half strap" off of Polar's website and that makes the wrist strap fit a woman's wrist just fine - without a lot of excess strap sticking out.

Too unreliable

It is really hard for me to give this watch such a bad rating. I have been a long user of Polar products and really love the service they provide and their past products, in particular, the Polar V800 which is very accurate. I guess I start with the good things: it is a light watch, looks great and has a long battery life. This is unfortunately where it ends. The biggest problem with the long battery life is, that Polar has changed their GPS chip to a Sony one, which is known to be less reliable. Further, due to the flatter design of the watch, they need to use a different GPS antenna or have changed the location of the antenna. Both of the above design changes have unfortunately very grave consequences: the GPS data is completely unreliable, particularly when you run within a city, nearby trees or leave alone in the forest. (Most marathon races are unfortunately right in the middle of big cities...) This bad GPS data starts a chain reaction: pace data is wrong, distance is unreliable, speed, navigation, running index, recovery- name it and it depends on accurate GPS data. Now before you say- use a footpod or Stryd: automatic calibration for foot pods is set to on and for the time being you cannot turn this off! This means your accurate foot pod will be calibrated by an unreliable GPS chip... Needless to say- all of the above makes this watch not a tool for somebody who is seriously in training. I wanted a watch that helps me with my marathon training (I am a Boston qualifier, so I take training rather seriously!). The Polar Vantage V cannot, in my opinion, be used for serious training. I have tested this watch by using the Polar V800, which is known for excellent GPS data, on the other arm. The Polar V gave me wildly inconsistent data, usually 20 seconds per minute slower pace than the V800. In a race, this would be a catastrophe, particularly during a marathon. You would speed up and run at a real pace of 5:10 while the watch tells you 5:30...you will hit the wall. At least if Polar would allow you to turn auto-calibration for foot pods off, the problems could be solved, but according to Polar this is not on their immediate to-do-list. I was glad that I had bought this watch via Amazon. After three weeks of trying everything and anything to make it work, I decided to return the watch.

Maravilloso monitor

The best Polar watch I have had, ever.

I have been using Polar watches for around 25 years and this is my fourth (immediately previous was the M400). The Vantage V is head and shoulders above the earlier versions and while keeping the Polar navigation system the Vantage V now encompasses the latest tech from touch screen (when not exercising) to wrist heart rate monitoring. I was a little sceptical about the latter as I was pleased with the H10 chest stap however the wrist monitoring has not dropped out once on any of my trail runs. I am still working my way through the new information the Vantage V provides such as the power outputs (Watts), strain, tolerance and built in maps but I for me I can never get enough data. I find the Vantage is more comfortable to wear than the M400 because it feels less bulky and the stap is softer and shorter. Some more subtle improvements over the M400 are the use of colour displays when you are exercising, the high resolution screen, and a tiny thing ... the lug on the stap loop that keeps the excess strap firmly in place. Battery life is good and I was surprised that with all the new tech the Vantage's battery run-down after a three hour session was less than the M400. The Vanatge also picks up satellites much faster than the M400 (and now vibrates when it is locked on) and syncs data to Polar Flow much more quickly. The new charge pad takes a little while to get used to but I like that it is magnetic. I bought my Vanatge V from Amazon for AUD$491 which made it a "must have". My old M400 also survives. I replaced the band and passed it to my eldest ... who likes the retro look of it.
