He hopes to practice Saturday when the team arrives in Denver. For my thoughts on this game, as well as the other games featuring teams from the AFC West, please keep reading.
Manning had 212 yards passing to Rodgers’ 37 in the first half, but the Broncos had eight penalties for 69 yards to Green Bay’s one flag for 5, so Green Bay only trailed 17-7 at the half. This year the expectations are high and the Packers are thirsty and poised to compete for a championship once again. Starks has been hampered by an ailing hip this week and coach Mike McCarthy hinted that Lacy could shoulder the load versus Denver by revealing that he is “starting to get back to himself”. Under his leadership, they have won 100 games, lost 49 and tied one – sporting an impressive. Tennessee doesn’t have QB job security issues; once Marcus Mariota is recovered from a left knee injury, he’s the man. Otherwise, like this week, they have to go with second-year Zach Mettenberger, who struggled in a loss to Atlanta last week.
Note: Every draft pick besides Christian Ringo is on their active 53 man roster. One of his deep passes fell incomplete and the Packers accepted the 5-yard penalty. I think this defense in this stadium is a bad match-up for the Packers right now.
The Broncos, whose 26 sacks lead the league, surrendered a 47-yard completion on a free play in the fourth quarter at Cleveland in their last game when Malik Jackson jumped offside, allowing the Browns to hang around until overtime. Needles to say, I guess this game is a win-win for this Bronco fan!
The Denver Broncos’ top-ranked defense appears to have all the pieces in place to slow down the reigning MVP on Sunday night in a battle of unbeaten teams. These are the lowest-ranked offenses in the league, and to boot, the Rams have a sensational pass rush. We’ll be encouraged if Anderson comes off the Week 7 bye and looks better against the Packers on Sunday. The Broncos without question have one of the league’s best defensive units and for a team that was supposed to be built around their offensive game it looked like the ideal recipe for this group to get over the hump and get back to the Super Bowl.
Thus, Denver made a few history and the Packers did not.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers face off against Peyton Manning and the Broncos in a big Week 8 matchup. Defensively, the Chargers can’t get any traction or momentum because they find themselves on the field constantly in the game, especially early. Only a midweek ankle injury to rookie cornerback Damarious Randall has affected his plans in any way. The two are capable of making big plays, but also have been susceptible to giving up the occasional big play or two by being over-aggressive each game. Instead of turning the ball over on short throws, go for the gold and try to hit Demaryius Thomas or Emmanuel Sanders on vertical routes down the field.
What Their Coaches Are Saying “I think [Defensive Coordinator] Wade [Phillips] does such an incredible job as far as getting his system in and how fast his players have always played at all of his stops that I’ve had the opportunity to compete against him”. Clearly in Denver, it’s a very talented defense, they have excellent depth and their numbers speak for themselves.
The Broncos will have trouble turning Rodgers over on Sunday Night, and Manning will have his share of turnovers, giving the Packers the edge and likely deciding the game in their favor. “He’s still tremendous at anticipating where receivers are going to be”.

The Green Bay Packers come to Mile High to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football. Somebody's "0" must go in this battle of undefeated 6-0 teams. The Packers last played on the 18th and are coming off the bye week. In their last game, they moved to 6-0 with a 27-20 win over the Chargers. Denver is also coming off their bye week, with their last game being a tough 26-23 overtime road win over the Browns.
The feeling on the part of many is that Green Bay is the more serious Super Bowl contender. But that could be based purely on their offense, which is certainly more eye-catching this season than Denver. The Broncos have transformed from a high-flying team to one that relies on defense and a more-balanced offense. While the results indicate the transition is going well, the close wins have people thinking Denver is vulnerable. In their 6 wins, only one was by a double-digit margin. And only once has the offense surpassed 26 points of scoring.
While it is jarring to see such a muted offense and Peyton Manning not surpassing 300 yards on a weekly basis, but it's not entirely clear that this approach might not be more sustainable for the aging Manning and Company. Their offense is ranked 29th in total yards, while Manning is nowhere near the top of the passing rankings. Ronnie Hillman has rushed for 100 or more yards in two of his last three games, though establishing a consistent run game has been a struggle for the Broncos this season.
Still, this Broncos offense can still get business done through the air. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders lead the Broncos with 527 yards apiece. But the aerial cast of players is thinner than in previous seasons. The offense this season is basically Manning going to Thomas and Sanders, with Hillman coming out of the backfield and running back CJ Anderson adding an assist. They no longer have an impactful tight end in the passing game or a viable third receiver. And let's face it, we're seeing a version of Peyton Manning who still has the capacity for magic, but is starting to look his age. That's why taking some of the load off his shoulders could pay off later, even if it creates some moments of frustration for their backers right now.
What brings it all together for the 2015 Broncos is a defense that is the top-ranked unit in the league. They are allowing less than 200 yards through the air on average, while doing a great job in clamping down on opposing ground games. They've averaged just 17 points allowed per game and even Manning with 10 trash collectors around him can top that most weeks. The defense is not just stout, but it's also one that makes plays. They've registered 26 sacks in just 6 games, along with 9 picks and 8 recovered fumbles. That's huge and if this defense keeps playing like this, Denver is a massive threat. A 6-0 record speaks loudest, as does an ability to simply win games, which this team has shown it can do.
Denver will be facing by far their toughest opponent of the year, even if they benefit from the game taking place at home. After wins against the Chiefs, Ravens, Lions, Vikings, Raiders, and Browns, things kick up considerably against a rested Packers team that looks dynamite. They've covered 5 of 6 spreads, with their last game against San Diego being the only exception and they still won by a TD. Aaron Rodgers has been deathly efficient, with 15 TD throws and just 2 picks. Resurrected receiver James Jones has 6 touchdowns in as many games, helping fill the void left by Jordy Nelson being lost with an injury. Eddie Lacy has been a less consistent threat than he was in his first two seasons, but James Starks has filled in well in spots, though he is questionable for Sunday. But they should be getting WR Devante Adams back, giving their aerial attack another dimension along with the ever-dangerous Randall Cobb.
The Green Bay defense has also been a pleasant surprise. It's not a group that needs to be the shutdown unit Denver is, but they are giving the offense more than enough room to operate. They have registered 23 sacks, while Rodgers has only been sacked 11 times. And while GB has two team picks, the defense has 8. Julius Peppers is still a handful and Clay Matthews is remaining healthy and making a big difference. At 16.8 points allowed per game, this defense remarkably leads the league in that category, despite being 12th against the pass and 22nd against the run. It's a clutch group and when they need a big play or stop, they often get it. And with the bye, key guys like Morgan Burnett, BJ Raji, and Nick Perry were able to come back from injury.
This is certainly a toughie. The inclination with both teams is to regard them as largely offensive forces, but that's changed a bit, especially with Denver. It's still going to be a tough game for both teams. One can imagine the Green Bay offense struggling on the road against such a tough "D." I see Denver grinding away and keeping it close with a chance to win the game late as a home dog.
