For example, a negative point spread is essentially a two-leg parlay: the team has to win (equivalent of moneyline betting) and the winning team has to score a big enough margin over the opponent.

The alternative to spread betting is for the favored team to pay out less than if the unfavored team wins. In the example above, team A wins and pays out $1.50 for every $1.00 bet, if team B wins it pays out $2.25 for every $1.00 bet.
NBA, I do both. I like Live-Betting totals because I think a lot of value can be had after runs/droughts. I rarely Live-Bet point spreads unless I'm hedging. Hockey is 100% Moneyline only unless I have an angle I'm playing with the total. Soccer, I'm all over the place... lean totals and props. Football, everything is in play.
Professional betting has other elements such as point spreads. Currently, even though my system is so accurate, I seem to have professional betters laughing at me because I haven't factored that element in.

The plus minus is just a handicap to make the betting even, force the favorite to win by a certain amount to even out the bets for each side. They do .5 to avoid pushes.

Spread is a (US) betting term, for the amount of points a team is favorited by / expected to win by Bengals -3.5 would mean the Bengals are expected to win their game by 3.5 points or more (functionally, the bet is lost if they win by 3 points or fewer, or lose).
Point spread bets are even odds, so you bet $100 to win $100. Another sports betting thing you may encounter is an odds line that looks like "Giants -170, Jets +130."
