Justice (Janet Jackson) loses her boyfriend in a shooting at a drive in movie theater. Afterward she feels lost with nothing but her poetry and her job at a hair shop. The story is not just about whether she can pull herself out of her depression but embracing the positive sides of African American culture. Poetic Justice breaks down into two parts. The first highlights the problems in African American society. Besides Justice’s boyfriend being killed there are scenes of men being arrested, dysfunctional families, and more. It was those problems that led to Justice’s depression as she was a victim of violence. The second was a road trip where Justice meets Lucky (Tupac). They see positive things like a black family re-union where they hear a bit of preaching by one of the aunties played by Maya Angelou about how the younger generation has to change their mindset. There’s an African cultural fair. The story then transforms into one about black love. Love for each other, for black culture, and between men and women. This was John Singleton’s second movie after Boyz N The Hood. It showed that he was expanding his vision from just presenting the difficulties of urban life to the possibilities that were out there for young people. C

Wow. I had no idea Tupac and JJ were such good actors. White boy here. I recognized Regina King's voice from that of Huey and Riley in Boondocks instantly! I had never realized she was such a good actor! And Maya Angelo is in this!? This movie is truly a gem. Love it.
