Downloaded and tried this game out on my wife, and a couple of friends. I have been into table-top rpgs since the late 1970s. My group tried D&D, but found it too complicated for their tastes. We are in our early 60s, and had a ball playing! The game is simple, but can be detailed to your preferences of play. What tables would you recommend for a homebrew gm screen?

Thank you Kenneth for your support and kind words! I’m glad you found it and a fun time was had by all.

For a home brew GM screen I would take the task system difficulty numbers, and the front and back of the second sheet of the main rules. When I run it I normally have the monster list main page in front of me to reference when the fighting starts. When dungeon crawling I reference the dungeon room generator and room features table. All these I think would make for a good screen.

Please leave a written review if you find the time and are able. Again thank you so much for checking out and supporting the game it means a lot. I’m glad veteran players such as yourself can appreciate and enjoy the game. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hi Brandon,

Im new on paper and pencil's RPG and i decided to get started with your fabolous system, but i had a few undestanding problems reading the rules like i dont know the meaning of "CS D6-2" attempting to create a character for example, or the task resolution system bases on skills (that i havent found) so my question is if are there any videos or posts explaining the system for beginers. Thanks for your attention and sorry for my english, isn't my mother language.

Hi Alejandro,

Thanks for checking out the game and the kind words. I will attempt to explain here so that others might see it if they also need an explanation.

CS D6-2 means to roll a six-sided die and subtract 2 from it. CS means Combat Skill (how good the character, attack or monster is at combat) which will be different for classes and monsters.

The task resolution system is a roll of a D6 and it succeeds if you roll high enough based on the difficulty that the task has been assigned by the person running the game, the “Pocket Master”. Every character and monster can attempt tasks such as strength based tasks or agility based tasks, etc. and the Pocket Master must decide what the difficulty for that task would be for each character or monster attempting the task.

If you haven’t already, check out the example of play which is a pdf that is one of the downloads. It may help.

I hope this has been helpful. If you still need help please let ... See more me know and I will try another way to make it clear. If you need to contact me directly reach out through the address found in the “About” section of my YouTube channel.

Thanks again!
Brandon

Hi Brandon,
Nice little system and I'm looking forward to giving it a try for some pickup games. Just a quick question after a read-through. While dwarves and elves can see in the dark, humans and halflings can't. I can't seem to find anything in the rules on how darkness impacts things. What happens to a human or halfling character's actions when the torches go out?

Brandon G

July 6, 2021 8:14 am Asia/Baghdad

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for checking out the game and the comment.
Much of Pocket Fantasy RPG relies on the reroll and the task system. Should the lights go out, tasks should become much more difficult for those characters that can’t see in the dark. Perhaps if they are trying to attack a monster, the monster might get to reroll its defense action, and/or maybe the player must make a tough or very difficult task roll just to be able to even have an attempt to attack the monster. It’s really up to the Pocket Master and what makes sense to them to keep the game fun. If you have any other questions please leave a comment. If you get a chance to play I’d love to know your thoughts and maybe if you could leave a review.

Thanks!
Brandon

Hi Brandon,
Love the system. I want to try it for online or pick up games. It's a fine OSR style game without being another clone. Are there any plans for additional settings: Pocket Modern, SF, Horror? It looks like it is easily adaptable. Congrats on a great job.

Hello Brandon!
I'm absolutely intrigued by your system! I was wondering if there is a way to purchase a "hard copy" of all the items published to date...?

Thank you for your time and response!

Thanks for checking the game out! I don’t have any news about a hard copy at this time but that is something that could very well be in the future ;)

Thanks for the question and I hope you enjoy the game!

For a very long time I've been looking for a rulesystem that provides D&D-like experience with minimal amount of rules and math so it would be easy to play for both game master and players. Looks like I found one - Pocket Fantasy RPG :)

Things that I really like in this game:
- The way "attribute checks" are implemented: it's just a logical level of task complexity (simple, average, tough, etc.) that maps to necessary d6 value
- Approach to cost of things: values are defined by dice roll made based on item rarity (mundane, normal, unique) so no "tables of items" and any kind of perplexities when something isn't found there

Things that are good but could be a little bit better:
- Combat maybe is too simple, would be nice to have some optional rules that add some basic tactic (attack from behind, covers, losing spells on damage)
- Layout and language: they do what they have to do but there are still some minor problems that make perfectionists ... See more shiver

The only thing I don't like is Initiative: somehow it's a unexpected mix of "per side" and "per character" approaches that forces you to keep track of initiative anyway, I think "per side" initiative would be much more appropriate. Yes, it's easily solved by home rules but still.

Nonetheless it's now the game I'll be playing with both new and experienced players and I highly recommend it to everyone who doesn't have time to learn and use more traditional "rules heavy" game systems. Also I recommend to check out official adventures, they are really nice.

Thanks a lot to everyone who was involved in "Pocket Fantasy RPG" development! Hope it will be noticed and supported by players.

Hello, im just reading thru the pdf and im alredy in love with the game. Just yesterday i was reading Knave and right now i think this is better. Thanks for the great game. I searched but couldnt find a character sheet. Is a character sheet available somewhere?

Brandon G

Aug 1, 2020 6:25 am Asia/Baghdad

Thank you very much for the kind words! I really appreciate it! No there isn’t a character sheet but I’ve thought about making one. Normally people just use the cards but I think a character sheet also should be available. Thanks again for the support and the comment!

Thanks for the nice, positive response. I believe the game more than deserves a character sheet and it will add to the personality of the game. I wonder if you're going to add a separate document or add it directly to the core rules. Do you have more games? I wish you have a dark theme/supernatural game with similar rules/framework. If not, maybe I will try to adapt some stuff in the future. Love you man !

I agree. I wish DriveThru had a way to like comments. Such a feature might help attract more players to this one.

Brandon G

Aug 1, 2020 3:07 pm Asia/Baghdad

Would you like the character sheet separate or part of the core rules pdf? I will try to work on making a sheet ASAP.

I don’t have more standalone games though I have written for other products.

Can you explain more what you mean by dark theme/supernatural game please? A more darker Pocket Fantasy RPG or something more like World of Darkness? It may be something I can consider in the future.

Thanks again for the support and commenting it only helps me try to make the best product I can deliver!

ENRIQUE R

Aug 1, 2020 7:03 pm Asia/Baghdad

When you purchase the core rules, it is divided in a few separate documents. ( Reference cards, rules, etc) I think you can put it there, as another document. I'm afraid that if you put it as a separate pdf, maybe some people won't be able to find it. Yes, I'm thinking something like world of darkness. I think the framework you have in Pocket Fantasy, is perfect and easily adapted to some genres but I think it will be a great adaptation for a supernatural themed game.

Thanks for the input and I've been working on a simple 2 per page character sheet keeping with the smaller format and will be uploading it today. Please see if it is of use. I am not a professional at layout and only use Word. If you have any suggestions about the character sheet, and it's something I can do I will try to accommodate as much as I can. Thanks again for the suggestion on a supernatural themed game and I will do some thinking on it.

Hello again. Hope youre doing well. im just finished to transcribe my previous PCs from 5TD to Pocket Fantasy. I think the new character sheets are well done and have good info to track your PC, but i think theyre small. I think it will work better if you rotate the sheet and make it a single sheet per page because its easy to fill completely and run out of space. Also Maybe reduce "race" to one row. Finally you can fill the resultant space below, with a classic "Notes" rows/section. I already talked to my players and they agree to take a one shot with Pocket Fantasy instead Five torches deep. Hope by the weekend i have a review. Thanks again for your kindness and support.
EDIT: Maybe you can have 2 character sheets because this game is also very good to play anywhere and the little character sheet is more appealing to transport or playing anywhere outside the house.

Brandon G

Aug 4, 2020 6:33 am Asia/Baghdad

Thanks for the input on the sheets and I will see about making these a little big bigger as well as making a 2nd full portrait sized sheet with the mentioned Notes section. I look forward to your review and I hope your players enjoy the game!

Brandon,

Love this game! Looking forward to trying The Lost Vault of Urstav. Thanks for developing an amazing minimalist RPG. I have play tested MANY, and this is without a doubt my favorite. I have an interesting "edition?" of the game I would like to share with you. I have modified the form factor of the game into a printable booklet (38 pages believe it or not).

Hi there!

Very interesting system! I have a few specific questions about the mechanics, if you don't mind me asking.

With regards to the Druid's "Beast Friend" ability and the Necromancer's "Undead Minion" ability:
- Do the same rules from the Wizard Summon Monster spell apply, i.e.: The creature only starts acting on the following round (not the round in which it was summoned)?

- Does the caster need to spend their action to control the creature? This question also applies for the Commander's "Soliders" ability. The Wizard's "Summon Monster" ability does not require the caster to spend their turn, but I am not sure if the same applies here.

- Can the creature be instructed to harm itself, or is that restricted like the Wizard's "Summon Monster" ability? This question also applies for the Commander's "Soliders" ability.

Are Druids able to calm beasts and get a Beast Friend during ... See more combat?

With regards to the Berserker's "Fury" ability: when humanoid enemies witness Rage, do they just roll the Tough task once when Rage is activated, or do they roll every turn that Rage is active, and the outcome only affects their Defense actions for the current round?

With regards to the Assassin's "Poison" ability: When you apply poison to a weapon, does the poison only "exist" on the round it was applied? Or does is the poison effect applied to every victim for the rest of combat? For example, if I apply the poison on round #1 and then miss my attack (0 damage), and on round #2 my weapon does hit the enemy, would they take d6 damage on round #3?

Last but not least, a general question: does the player need to spend their combat action to drink a potion? Or can they still move and attack if they drank?

Thanks, and looking forward to hear from you!

Thanks for the questions and checking out the game. I will clarify all these questions in an updated file. But until that is up the answers are the following.

The beast friend and undead minion will act on the round after they are “summoned” just like the wizard. If they are summoned up before the combat they can act on the first action when their “controller” acts.

Summoned, beast friend or soldiers do not take up their “controller’s” action. The game aims for fun first and losing your action is not fun imo.

All summoned, beast friend and soldiers will not harm themselves. When it comes to soldiers the pocket master will have to decide what would harm the soldier in specific situations they may face and either have the player role play their orders to the soldiers or just make a ruling that yes or no the soldier won’t do that order.

Druids may calm and get a Beast Friend in combat but the Pocket Master should use the task system for how enraged ... See more the beast might be. Maybe it’s really mad and when the Druid tries to calm it they need to roll tough or very difficult wisdom roll.

When a humanoid enemy sees a rage they roll once against it. Further rages do not force more rolls against the humanoid. Their defense actions are affected for the entire encounter.

Poison exists on the weapon until damage is dealt, so if you “miss” and do no damage it’s still there. It is applied and removed from the weapon once you actually do damage with the weapon. I will update the poison ability so it is more clear and will allow assassins to use heroic rerolls for more applications of poison.

Drinking a potion is a free action. The potion cards state that but I will add it to the main rules.

Thanks again for the questions, it helps make Pocket Fantasy RPG a better game!

I’d rule undead minion could hurt themselves.
