Similar to getting hair extensions, Botox, or eyebrow microblading — getting lip filler — injectable hyaluronic acid — is a completely optional beauty enhancement. The kind offered by professionals can get pricey, especially considering these services may require multiple sessions to achieve the level of fullness you desire. If you want to give the look of fuller lips a very temporary test run before deciding whether or not you want to take the injectable route, lip plumpers in the form of glosses and balms are the next best thing.
According to board-certified dermatologist Michele Green , who is based in New York City, topical lip plumpers are enriched with active ingredients — including cinnamon, ginger, peppermint, and the same ingredient found in injectables, hyaluronic acid (more on this later). Simply put, these ingredients create a plumping effect by temporarily swelling the lips. "The skin reaction [caused by these ingredients] results in localized swelling, which gives the lips a temporary plumping effect," Green explains. Fortunately, these ingredients are considered safe and effective, according to Erum Ilyas, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group .
However, when it comes to finding the best lip plumpers, the process can quickly become overwhelming with complicated ingredient lists and seemingly countless options. Board-certified dermatologist Peterson Pierre of the Pierre Skin Care Institute in Thousand Oaks, California, recommends looking for lip plumpers enriched with hyaluronic acid. According to Pierre, the moisture-attracting ingredient offers a plumping effect since it can hold 1,000 times its weight in water. He also recommends looking for lip plumpers infused with moisturizing and conditioning ingredients such as shea butter and ceramides to leave your lips feeling smooth and moist.
Board-certified New York City-based dermatologist Hadley King also recommends lip plumpers enriched with humectants (such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin ), emollients (which include fatty acids and ceramides), and occlusives (like beeswax) for maximum hydration.
You’ll also notice that some lip plumpers are formulated with peptides . "Peptides are composed of amino acids. Some peptides stimulate collagen and elastin production, which work by increasing moisture as well, producing localized swelling in the lips," Green explains. Cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson agrees that all of the aforementioned ingredients offer a temporary plumping effect.

Nyx Professional Makeup Filler Instinct Plumping Lip Color effortlessly glides on and offers eight hours of wear time without drying out your lips. A combination of ginger and hyaluronic acid in the creamy formula makes lips look fuller. This lipstick-gloss hybrid offers semi-sheer coverage for the perfect flush of color. Choose from seven vibrant shades, including Miami Nights, a fun hot pink, or this Beach Nights nude hue (shown above).
Kosas's Wet Lip Oil Plumping Treatment Gloss is one of Allure's favorite lip oils of all time. Its non-sticky, smoothly gliding formula is spiked with hyaluronic acid, peptides, avocado oil, and fatty acid-rich evening primrose oil. The combination of conditioning ingredients works to plump and hydrate, while the fun, candy-colored shades — such as this cherry-red Jaws shade — offer a juicy, shiny finish.
"This lip gloss gives the appearance of fuller lips," Green tells Allure . Dior Addict's hyaluronic acid-infused Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss keeps lips nourished and hydrated. Choose from 11 shades, including Cherry (red), Coral (peach), Raspberry (hot pink), or this Beige (nude), which are available in high-shine and shimmery finishes. The refreshing, minty scent is an added bonus.
This clear Plump Shot Collagen-Infused Lip Serum from Buxom is infused with both hyaluronic acid and collagen for an added boost of hydration. "Topical collagen is a humectant , so it's similar to hyaluronic acid in that it can help to temporarily plump by hydrating," King tells Allure .
Grande Lips Hydrating Lip Plumper Gloss — an Allure editor favorite — is formulated with a combination of conditioning ingredients like niacin ( vitamin B3 ) and hyaluronic acid. "Niacin causes lip plumping by increasing capillary flow of blood to the lips, making them swell or plumping them," Green explains. The tint comes in seven shiny, pigmented shades, including this clear option.
The Hyaluronic Acid Lip Booster from PCA Skin is designed to moisturize and volumize lips while simultaneously keeping them soft and hydrated. It’s formulated with hyaluronic acid and peptides to stimulate collagen production. "Peptides induce collagen production, which also aids in the plumping effect," says Green.
The affordable E.L.F. Lip Plumping Gloss is a drugstore favorite, thanks to its nourishing formula. It's made with soothing vitamin E and moisturizing coconut oil , which, according to Green, makes lips softer and revives chapped lips. Green also tells Allure that coconut oil performs double-duty as a moisturizer and volumizer since it has "some natural lip-plumping capacity." Choose from six shimmery shades, all of which have a sheer finish.
The cinnamon-infused L.A. Girl Lip Plumper clocks in at under five dollars and comes recommended by Green herself. "The combination of the high shine and cinnamon gives a temporary volumizing effect," she says. "The cinnamon causes a tingling sensation and improves blood flow." Additionally, this formula contains occlusive mineral oil to "block transepidermal water loss," according to King. So as moisture stays in, lips look fuller.
King is a fan of Alpha-H's Absolute Lip Perfector, which is enriched with a slew of moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and beeswax. The colorless lip plumper contains mint and peppermint oil , creating mild swelling for an even more voluminous appearance.
Jouer Cosmetics Essential Lip Enhancer Balm restores dry, chapped, and flaky lips while simultaneously plumping them. It's packed with conditioning ingredients like jojoba seed oil, which Green credits with reducing fine lines and improving lips' overall texture. The formula is also enriched with moisture-locking shea butter , and the balm's refreshing rose scent adds an extra-luxurious touch.
Too Faced's Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper is made with several key ingredients — including antioxidant-packed avocado oil, fatty acid-rich jojoba oil , and moisturizing vitamin E — to make lips look and feel more hydrated. According to Green, avocado oil acts as an "excellent lip balm" that also plumps. Choose from six ultra-glossy shades, including Strawberry and Bubblegum.
Maybelline New York's Lifter Gloss Hydrating Lip Gloss With Hyaluronic Acid is a drugstore must-buy. The extra-large applicator wand effortlessly glides the shiny formula across your lips, coating them in an even layer of product with just one swipe. There are 15 shades to suit any makeup mood, including metallics, sparkly nudes, and pretty pastel pinks.
Swipe this clear gloss onto your lips up to two times per day. Created by board-certified plastic surgeon Lara Devgan, the lip plumper is packed with conditioning ingredients like hydrating hyaluronic acid, fatty acid-rich ceramides, and soothing vitamin B5 .

Plastic surgeons know a thing or two about aging—not all of which involve going under the knife. Every year, new skin-plumping products hit the market and make great strides. We spoke with plastic surgeon David Shafer, MD, to learn about which are the best.

"Skin-plumping products cause a temporary, localized swelling in the area to help boost the tissue and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles," says Shafer. To get the most out of your skin-plumping routine, be sure to apply products daily ( along with sunscreen ), stay hydrated, and maintain a balanced diet. And don't forget to pay attention to a room's humidity level. "Using a humidifier is a great way to help ensure your skin does not dry out while you sleep in the winter," Shafer says.

Hyaluronic acid will decrease the appearance of dryness as it locks in moisture —the vital component of healthy-looking skin —while antioxidants "help prevent damage to the skin and improve overall skin health," Shafer notes. While Shafer does say that "conservative" lip and wrinkle injections boost the goal for smoother skin, there's no need to go that far if you'd rather stick to topical ingredients.

Ceramides are a specific type of fat or lipids. Dermatologists recommend applying products with them twice daily, in the morning and at night, for best results. They can restore the skin barrier, lock in moisture, reduce signs of aging, and even appease inflammation. Shafer notes that "one product, HA5 Smooth and Plump Lip System ($58) from SkinMedica, contains dimethicone to help hold in moisture, glycerine to help smooth and shine lips, and hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain moisture."

You may know this word in relation to collagen, and for good reason: Peptides are known as collagen boosters that also help to preserve your body's supply of this needed protein. "Peptides tell your cells to produce more collagen, one of the major building blocks of the skin," Erin Gilbert, MD, FAAD, PhD, a board-certified dermatologist and neuroscientist told us . "So by applying them directly to your skin, you're telling your body it needs to make more collagen."

We asked Shafer for his advice on the skin-plumping products to use daily, and he gave us nine that range from $180 down to $7.

If budget isn't an issue, try SkinMedica's HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator. "This has five different types of hyaluronic acid to immediately plump skin and keeps it plump over time," Shafer says.

Active Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, Plankton Extract | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: N/A | Size: 1 and 2 oz | Cruelty Free: Yes | Byrdie Clean: Yes

Has more than 380 highly-concentrated growth factors

The HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator isn't the only solid option from SkinMedica. "This incorporates the highest concentration of a patented growth factor blend, at 93.6 percent," Shafer says. "The tissue nutrient solution has more than 380 growth factors and cytokines."

Active Ingredients: Cytokines, Human Fibroblast Conditioned Media | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: N/A | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty Free: Yes | Byrdie Clean: Yes

Improves tone, texture, and clarity

If you take one thing away, it's that hyaluronic acid should be your hero ingredient to plump fine lines . This product by Elizabeth Arden incorporates it into a gel formula. "This contains hyaluronic acid to smooth skin and minimize the look of lines and wrinkles," Shafer notes.

Active Ingredients: Tree Mushroom Extract, Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: N/A | Size: 2.6 oz | Cruelty Free: No | Byrdie Clean: Yes

If you notice your skin is starting to need more plumping, it might be time to upgrade your serum to something formulated for anti-aging. "This is a peptide-rich serum that penetrates the skin to reduce the visible signs of aging and keep it looking healthy," Shafer explains. "Matrixyl 3000 is a highly effective peptide that helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by up to 45 percent."

Active Ingredients: Green Tea, Omega-3 Fatty Acids | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: N/A | Size: 2 oz | Cruelty Free: N/A | Byrdie Clean: Yes

Get more bang for your buck with Cetaphil's Hydrating Night Cream. "This cream is formulated with hyaluronic acid, a powerful moisturizing agent known for its ability to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, " Shafer says. "It also has a pro-vitamin complex and olive extract."

Active Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polydecene, Glycerin | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: N/A | Size: 1.7 oz | Cruelty Free: No | Byrdie Clean: No

Infused with SPF 20 for UV protection

Kill two birds with one stone by using a foundation that's infused with skin-plumping properties. "This foundation works to fill in and blur lines and wrinkles with micro-filters and optical diffusers," Shafer says.

Active Ingredients: SPF 20 | Finish: N/A | Shade Range: Fair to Deep | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty Free: No | Byrdie Clean: N/A

Can plump while also preventing stretch marks

You may know of Bio-Oil as a product that can help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy , but did you know that it can also be applied to your face? "Bio-Oil is another good trick," Shafer says. "Applying Bio-Oil can keep your skin's barriers hydrated and thereby plump up your skin cells. Wrinkles appear less obvious on moisturized skin."

Active Ingredients: Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Lavender Oil | Finish: N/A | Shade Range:
