A great concept, executed well. Good script, good cast, good scenes and sets. Yes, overhead microphones are present in almost every interior close shot. This is NOT the fault of anyone involved in making the movie!: They are NOT present in the theatrical release or the DVD/BluRay. I believe Amazon, or whoever created this release for Amazon, royally screwed up, and did not do the letterboxing needed to match the framing of the theatrical release. Inexcusable by whoever did it, indicating both laziness and a total lack of professionalism, and also by Amazon for not catching it as part of even a minimal quality check. Bad Amazon, BAD! At least we can see why the sound is so good!
True, the story in not fresh in that a character pursues love by meeting certain expectations. The difference is in the flavor. This story is not about a man who likes what he likes because that's what he's told or that's what the world he grew up in said to. He likes it because he discovered it through his own experiences and no pressure from the society pushing down on him will change that. The leading heroine starts as a shallow person who feels justified in her behavior because she has the weight of the majority behind her. But once she inexplicably falls for Kang because she seems obsessed that he doesn't find her attractive, for the first time she tries to look at things from a different perspective. My bias towards the story is evident, as I sympathize with Kang on this one but check it out for yourself. When you look for moral of the story, though, don't stop at skin deep. It only starts there.
Okay, so someone messed up on this version - see other comments regarding the overhead microphone - but that doesn't stop it from being fun. I enjoyed watching someone go through a physical transformation that is really just an outward expression of the more important changes as they figure out that the life they've been living really isn't making them happy with themselves or anyone else... it's also interesting to see how a normal sized girl (by western standards) is treated as though she is shockingly obese. The deeper aspects of the story are only touched upon briefly, which is a shame, with the writers and director seeming to prefer overstated tantrums and shots of overeating. The ending is nice and the overall message is a good one.
Lack of character motivation. Why did she like this man? She changed her whole life and her body to attract him. Why? She went from being a shallow unhappy skinny model to an unhappy fat out of work model. Other than getting the man she had no other motivation to cause the turning point. Not really worth the time.
This was a fun story with a great point!
