My wife and stayed here for two weeks and we were so thrilled with this hotel. The entire property is gracious and beautifully landscape: at no time did I feel crowded. The quality of the food and drinks was excellent and free-flowing. The hotel makes sure to put on excellent entertainment at nights, so that you can sit outside and enjoy the warm sea breezes at night. Often, there are vendors in the same plaza selling stuff.

Unlike so many other places I've stayed at, they pay attention to the little details and it shows. The entire property is the cleanest I've ever stayed at in twenty years of travelling. They go so far as to move all the furniture out of the restaurants and squeegee the floors on a regular basis. They are the only resort on the beach that has two guys rake the entire beach in front of the hotel starting at 5am. The hotel workers are out after dark picking up garbage, and we saw managers in the restaurants with temperature probes checking on the food.

My only criticisms would be the specialty restaurants and the watersports area. I found the service in all the restaurants to be excellent but some of the food was inconsistent. My favorites were the Mexican, Steak, and Brazillian restaurants, but I would definitely stay away from the French and Mediterranean. The food in those restaurants was bland and poorly prepared.... My favorites were the Mexican, Steak, and Brazillian restaurants, but I would definitely stay away from the French and Mediterranean. The food in those restaurants was bland and poorly prepared. The Brazilian restaurant was great the first time, with juicy, succulent meat, but lousy on the second try with dehydrated and overdone meat. The watersports guys aggragavated me to no end: they are rude, arrogant, and duplicitous. They make promises and then don't deliver on them later. They used inapporopriate and derrogatory language in front of me because they assumed I couldn't speak any Spanish or French. Kayaking was cancelled during my entire two week stay while other resorts allowed theirs out. I am an experienced kayaker and know that even a rank beginner could handle those kayaks in the prevailing conditions without a problem. The catamarans are poorly maintained, and the watersports guys just didn't care when I pointed out the sloppy rigging on the boat I took out. My catamaran was launched in the swim area, which is completely unsafe. I nearly collided with a couple of swimmers because the rudder on my catamaran jammed, while the resort worker stood idly by,. It is only through my sailing experience that I avoided injuring another guest. They also instructed me to stay within an idiotically tiny area that can be easily sailed within two minutes. Also, rent yourself a car and see some of the beautiful areas surrounding Playa del Carmen. You'll save a lot of money compared to going on organized tours or taking taxis. My wife and I drove all the way to Merida and back without any problems from the policee and I thought the roads were well maintained and easy to drive. More
we went to sandos playacar at the end of february to mid march and can truthfully say it is was the best family holiday we have had. food, service, facilities and especially kids club were fantastic. we have three children 3,7 and 8 and stayed in a junior suite right at the far end of the resort. we've seen a number of views where people have complained about being the furthest rooms from the beach but dont really understand their issues. yes it's a 10 -15 minute walk if you are at the far end to the beach (9 minutes reasonably liesurely walk without the three year old) but if you are that sloathly you find this too much there's shuttle from the lobby to the beach every 5 minutes. additionally the far end has particular benefits. it is very quiet. if you want less sleep then stay the far end but sure people who would moan about the noise on the other hand. we actually shifted rooms and the staff were very accomodating. additionally, the far end has the swim up bar and is much quieter thqn the pool near the beach. again i am sure people could moan if they were up at the other end that the pool would be too noisy! we did have trouble booking the restaraunts initially as the booking week we found out later in the trip starts sunday so everyone rushes to book up the restaraunts straight away. to be frank however the buffet non booking restaraunts had such great choice it didnt bother us and in a 2 week stay we also got to plenty of the booking restaraunts. now here comes the good stuff. we had to tell the kids they couldnt go to the kids club all day and every day.being holiday we not surprisingly wanted to see something of threm. but it was so good and the girls who ran it so brilliant and enthusiastic the kids were in teqrs qt the end of the holiday not wanting to leave. they had fashion shows, olympic games , face painting and best of all the resort had a full theatre and put on a disney show each week that the kids could participate in. in fact the entertainment team as a whole were brilliant (and that's understating how good they were). i also booked scuba diving with the resort school and based on diving in other countries found them extremely professional and well equipped. the cost was slightly more than if diving with another school along the beach but diving one on one in the sea and at the cenotes with a guide made it worth it over a whole gaggle of divers splashing around you. the resort was fantastic value for money, great staff (you'll always get one or two bad eggs in any resort but 2 slightly off waiters amongst a 100 or so who were falling over themselves to give us a great experience completely swamps slightly off service). re the accomodation. one thing we would look at if we went again is to see if we could get a room with a seperation for kids sleeping area or perhaps ajoining rooms as with the suites you are all in one room. comfortable enough but means you are limited with young kids in going to sleep or at least being quiet. but then again anywhere in the world i would expect this to add additional cost on and for the price we paid the suite was far more than acceptable.
My husband and I stayed here as a guest of a friend for one night and we could not comprehend why anyone would spend their hard earned cash and time off work staying here. It certainly is not a holiday in any sense of the word - my husband and I both felt like we had gone back in time to our boarding schools. Rules and more rules-if you do not follow the rules you will be regarded with a blank and hostile look by all members of the staff. We were put in a room at the farthest point of the resort- That is to say, it took 15-20 mins to walk to the beach. My husband checked in while I waited in the car with all of our equipment. They wouldn't give him the all inclusive "bracelet" for me to wear unless I actually appeared in person - I was tagged by the reception person like an endangered animal and left free to roam the resort and to relax. Unfortunately relaxation was not in my immediate future.Whatever request we had was meet with a "No, you cannot do that". We walked the 20 minutes to the beach and when we wanted a towel we were refused and told, "you need your towel card". We had our bracelet , and room key and told them we had no intention of walking back and forth for 40 mins to produce a card and they still wouldn't give us a towel, Now I think that is just stupid and ridiculous customer service. Next we tried to make a reservation for dinner. Everything was booked except for the one restaurant. We took that one. When we arrived, they could not find our reservation, and told us once again to walk all the way back to guest services because they wouldn't call them to confirm it. The restaurant at that time had about 8 tables out of 40 full. The manager finally relented after 10 minutes of arguing. The restaurant never got full-why argue with us in the first place? The next problem was the internet. No wi-fi, no internet, you have to pay for it. Well, ok- I guess so, but in this day and age it's pretty ridiculous to be charging for it. I call the from the desk, "can I pay for the internet and get the password please"? Answer- no. You must come down to the "meeting point" .Another 15 minutes away. Then you have to go to a little office and pay $5 for an hour. Don't try and charge it to your room, you'll have to walk all the way back to your room for cash, as they only accept that. Also, if you happen to be in the middle of an e-mail you get shunted off the internet at exactly an hour. Really laughably bad. Nobody that works here cares. You actually need a ticket to check out, kinda of like a get of of jail free card, which exactly what my husband and I felt like as we drove away. Wheeeee! We're out of there!! In an effort to be completely fair, here are the good points: Free water bottles in rooms Coffee maker in the the room Decent AC if you want it Better food & wine in the restaurant than anticipated. Pool and general areas kept nice and clean. Very cute animals walking around grounds. Could be good if you are handicapped as it is all accessible. That's all !
I aways read these reviews before/after I visit a resort. I, like many people I'm sure, laugh when a traveller gives a thumb's down on a place because he lost his camera on the plane, is p*ssed off for the next week and takes it out on the resort. I also think I can go with the flow when thinks aren't 100% perfect. However, I have to agree with the reviewers who experienced the mid March debacle at the Sandos Playacar. Although the teens were just being teens (I remember my Spring Break years with fondness/embarrassment), both the "parental supervison" and the resort's response to this rowdiness was equally non existent. The fact that they seemed to know each other seemed to give them the confidence to do just what they wanted...after they left on Wednesday 16th/Thursday 17th, the next group of college kids arriving were much better behaved. We were in rooms 2303/2304 and were wakened nightly between 2:00-3:00 am by the noise of drunks staggering to their rooms. My family and I never felt comfortable being near the bars as the behaviour and language (especially from the females) was unbelievable.. I felt I was in the middle of a "Girl's Gone Bad" video. My boys (aged 13) wanted to use the Activity Room in the evenings, but felt intimidated by the drunks at the bar (why an activity room gered to kids needs a bar I'll never know) On a more positive note, the resort was a nice place..it's four star and everything reflects that. People expecting the Ritz Carleton or Four Seasons will be disappointed...food wasn't the greatest I've ever tasted, but again, it's four star. Our rooms were clean, the housekeeping staff were efficient and any problems we had (room safe didn't work, no towels) were quickly resolved. Overall, I found the staff to be excellent..luggage picked up when promised, bartenders cheerful despite rudeness from the teens, fast service in speciality restaurants. The entertainment/social activity people were exceptionally good..lots of activities on the beach/in the pool. Unfortunately, the Spring Break crowd would take over some venues (beach volleyball, water polo) and most other guests felt uncomfortable and stayed away. The restaurants themselves were OK..not surprisingly, the Mexican one had the best food. The Asian and Mediterranean ones were also good..the Gaucho Steakhouse steaks were mediocre at best. Again, the service at all four was excellent. The beach area was excellent...lots of lounge chairs and space under the thatched umbrellas. The beach was raked every evening and there was little seeweed/debris on the beach despite the strong breezes. We loved the waves and the bottom was 100% sand...no coral/rocks to stub toes. The Hobie Cats, ocean kayaks and snorkel gear were well maintained and always available. I think if I had visited the resort either a week before or a week after, I would have rated it highly. However, I'll never go back in March. Because my kids have their public and high school breaks in mid-March, that also means that I'll never go back period. On final note: I filled out the survey form as I departed the resort expressing my thoughts. I was surprised to receive an e-mail from a Sandos executive soon after expressing his concerns and mentioning that the resort was taking steps to make sure this didn't happen again. He also mentioned that if I ever stayed at the resort again, I should mention his name when I registered. A nice touch
Very nice hotel, well located at 10 minutes by taxi from Playa del Carmen, I had a very nice room near the Meditanarien restaurant with a view but my brother had one that you don't want to stay on the balcony, don't see anything. Good food, the best place ever with the restaurant Γ  la carte, very good, good shows at night. But it is a factory, lots of people so the staff doesn't care, to many people in the same place and I understand, next time I'll go in a smaller hotel.
First of all, I have to tell you that my husband and I were very skeptical! We booked our trip (6 days, 5 nights) through IMS Vacations. By agreeing to attend a 90 minute "timeshare" presentation, we got a huge discount on our all inclusive vacation. Royal Elite (the vacation club) arranged for our transportation from the airport to the resort. We traveled in a nice van with one other couple that were staying at Sandos Caracol. The driver of the van was very professional and courteous. He even stopped at a 7 Eleven to let us get a cold drink and a snack. When we arrived at Sandos, we were greeted by very friendly bellmen, who unloaded our luggage and held it for us while we checked in. While in line at check-in we were offered cold drinks (yummy Pina Colada). We had no problem at all during check-in. We gave the front desk people the confirmation from IMS and were promptly given our room keys. They did ask us to stop by the Royal Elite desk in the main lobby to schedule our presentation. They Royal Elite rep (Carlos) was very friendly and told us to spend the next day enjoying ourselves and the resort. So we scheduled our presentation for our 3rd day there. We were then escorted to our room on a golfcart and the bellman unloaded our luggage for us. Our room was in the older section of the resort, but really close to the beach, main pool and the buffets. It was perfect for us! That evening we enjoyed dinner at the buffet and then sat in the Plaza area to enjoy the entertainment. That night the entertainment staff did the Sandos version of Deal or No Deal. I was chosen to be the contestant. It was really fun and I won a $400 spa package for 2. Awesome! I have to say the entertainment staff really work hard. They are there from early in the morning to late at night. Marco - you are awesome! The beach is beautiful! We had no problem at all finding beach chairs and a palapa. Very relaxing! There are plenty of activities for those that need to be entertained, but there are also great places for relaxation! Now about the "time-share" experience. My husband and I went into this expecting it to last half the day and be really high pressure. We were very pleasantly surpised! Our salesman was Hugo and he was a great guy! He was very personable and he made our morning very enjoyable. There was never any high pressured sales techniques! He was very frank with us and said most people just attend the presentation with no intention of purchasing a membership. We laughed and told him that we were "those people". However, once the vacation club was explained to us and we found out about all the benefits - we decided to become members. The staff spent a great deal of time answering our questions and putting our mind at ease about the timeshare "nightmares" we'd heard so much about. (Thanks Mike and Aaron) We take several nice vacations every year and discovered that this program would save us money! The cost was very affordable and they have a membership to fit every budget. Our presentation did last longer than 90 minutes, but it was only because we had so many questions and then when we decided to purchase - there was paperwork! From the moment we signed our purchase agreement, we were upgraded to "member" status and given black armbands. This allowed us to spend plenty of time in the "members only" pool and section of the beach (which included beverage and food service) I want to say a big Gracias to Gabriel for taking such good care of us at the pool! You are awesome! He even brought us fresh tacos that were being cooked on the beach for lunch! We had the opportunity to talk to other members and could not find one person that said anything bad about Royal Elite. They all told us that it takes a time or two to figure out how to use all of your benefits, but once you do - vacations are awesome. We took advantage of the pre-construction prices on the new units that are going to be beachfront! While we were there we tried two of the ala carte restaurants....the Steakhouse and the Asian. Both were really good. We will try some of the others when we return! The Spa...
