Yes, the title is absurd, but Pleasure Masturbation: New Wife Version desperately deserves a remastered, subtitled release. This is peak Hisayasu Satô in terms of style. Masashi Inayoshi is on cinematography and the film looks as gorgeous as it does grim. There are some absolutely staggering shots, including the nude masturbation set against a Tokyo skyline seen in the poster. Like Wife in Mourning, colours are used beautifully. Instead of tinted flashbacks, we get tinted fantasies. The world turns blue, morphing into a dildo-drenched dreamworld. The sex drowns in lurid pinks and deep purples. The framing is incredible. POV shots are used to great effect. The music is subtle, seeping in at just the right moments, making already intense sequences… more
Hisayasu Sato directing an X-rated sitcom premise (wife and husband think they're sexually incompatible because of the secret kinks they harbor where the husband only wants to watch other people have sex while the wife wants to be aggressively fucked while someone else watches). Love it. Tamer than all the other Sato flicks I've seen but the could just be the "seven Sato movies in two and a half days" desensitization talking (there is a lot of sex, more than many of his movies, but it feels not quite as transgressive; the wife's fantasies got close but they were also done far more intensely by Shinya Tsukamoto in A Snake of June so they lost I guess a bit of that punch).

Pleasure Masturbation: New Wife Version (1993) or ['快感 ＯＮＡＮＩＥ 新 妻 篇'], is a film by Hisayasu Satô that should not remain as one of the many or even as something easy to forget (I assure whoever sees this with the attention that is deserved, will find an interesting exploration about the couple, which could even be applied to non-sexual contexts).
I plan to extend this thought further, but I need to take the time to ponder it and decide what I want to say. Until then, I will leave this "review" as a "bookmark" to expand in the future.
the 10th Satô film i've watched!! i'm like 98% sure he's the director ive seen the most from, at least for full length features. anyway, this was pretty good! i'd say it's probably mid tier Satô. i would *not* recommend it as someone's first film to watch by him, but if you've already seen 7 or 8 it's pretty solid! it's hard to explain, but it's at once one of his most explicit films i've seen from him and also one of the safest. the story was pretty inconsequential. it's not a very exciting story, but still fun! and it ends with an amazing final line and final shot. glad i finally watched this~! <3
P.S. forgot to say, although the actors in this were good, i definitely missed Kiyomi Itō!
