The Rialto Report recently celebrated our fourth birthday, and so we thought it would be a good moment to take a brief step outside of the bubble of golden age XXX films, and look at what was happening to the depiction of sex in mainstream films over the same period.
Who were the sex stars of the 1970s? How seriously was their work being taken? And how well do their films measure up today?
Starting in 1969, Playboy magazine ran an annual article every December selecting the ‘Sex Stars’ of that year.
The series was enlightening on two fronts:
Firstly, it chronicled the increased sexual permissiveness in mainstream films, with films like ‘Last Tango in Paris’ (1972) receiving more and more attention with the general public.
But secondly, the articles also treated explicit sex films side by side with their Hollywood counterparts, thus fueling the idea that the two streams would perhaps eventually merge into one. Jamie Gillis , Serena , Jennifer Welles , and Harry Reems shared the same space as Raquel Welch, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson.
Interestingly however, as the decade moved forward, the Playboy articles started cooling on this notion, with the initial enthusiasm for XXX films waning and being ultimately replaced by a blissful ignorance of the existence of hard core movies.
Ironically this coincided with a time when some of the best adult films were being made, by filmmakers such as Radley Metzger , Alex de Renzy and Anthony Spinelli . With hindsight it seems as if the novelty of the concept of real sex on film was perhaps more interesting to the world than the actual quality of the films.
(As a bonus we’ve also included the October 1971 article from Playboy, ‘The Porno Girls’ – one of the first detailed portrayals of the emerging sex film industry in a high-circulation magazine.)

I have just finished listening to the Jennifer wells interview what a great story and the life she`s had . This is real closer for her fans out there. This is all we want to hear from stars out there is they are happy and doing well. Thats way after all these years the fans just want to whats happen to the gold ages stars they may have known are just getting to know now with web sites like this one . Playboy was an American magazine published quarterly by PLBY Group. Founded in 1953 by American magazine publisher Hugh Hefner (1926–2017) as a monthly magazine, it published general-interest features aimed at men interspersed with images of nude or semi-nude women, before ceasing print publication in 2020.
Each issue contained original articles written for men together with photographs of celebrities and professional models, as well as regular columns, fiction, personal stories, letters, advice pieces, news and interviews with public figures. It also included a full-frontal centerfold poster featuring a model (known as a Playmate ) of the month, along with a pictorial biography and the "Playmate Data Sheet", which listed her birthdate, measurements, turn-ons, and turn-offs. During its tenure, the magazine published short stories by a number of leading writers, including Arthur C. Clarke, Ian Fleming, Vladimir Nabokov, Saul Bellow, Chuck Palahniuk, P. G. Wodehouse, Roald Dahl, Haruki Murakami, and Margaret Atwood.
The magazine’s first issue was left undated—as Hefner was unsure there would be a second—and featured a photograph taken at the Miss America Pageant parade in 1952 of American film star Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) on the cover. A previously unused nude study of her was used as the centerfold; Monroe did not consent to the publication. Hefner later acquired (and is now interred in) the crypt beside Marilyn at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, for which he paid $75,000 in 1992.
The Internet Archive Collection contains microfilm published between 1953 and 2014.

Of course the pictorials were arguably the best part of the magazine, but I also found the articles were pretty good too.
Playboy 1953 Dec issue worth about $6000
Some of you may not know this (and if you did, you probably regretting it now if you did not hold on to them), but the pre- 1960 issues are quite valuable as collector items. In particular, the first issue, the 1953 December Playboy featuring Marilyn Munroe on the cover and centerfold goes for about $6000 US mint condition. Most of the other Playboy issues in that era are not as valuable, but they definitely carry a nice premium. If you still have your collection you might want to have it appraised and sold, certainly don’t trash it!
Now that these issues are online, you can view these expensive collector items in its entirety without having to buy them ( a lot easier than explaining to your wife about that $6000 credit card charge)
