This is a necessary evil if staying near the beach in Playa. It's certainly lively day and night, with some decent restaurants along the way. You can also find some great music as well. The area just wears on you quickly with all the solicitations. I eventually learned how to avoid it altogether unless going to a specific place. My best advice, go maybe once or twice and find a place to people watch. Otherwise, use 1st or 10th Ave going north or south and exolore side streets for a quieter vibe.
It was 5 years since we were in Playa but the new scam on 5th avenue is being approached by a person named Carlos saying he was from our hotel (darn wrist bands) but wanted us to come to his family's business just off the avenue. During our week long stay we were approached by no fewer than 4 guys named Carlos from our hotel and wanting us to come to their store. Never saw any of them actually at our hotel. They could at least find a different name. We like to walk the avenue but wish there were more places to sit along the way. What happened to the benches?
If you plan to visit Playa del Carmen you definitely need to visit Quinta Avenida or Fifth avenue, it is so colorful and full of fine dining, shopping, and just fun to walk, around 2 miles of all kinds of stores, restaurants, and souvenirs to take home. It was at walking distance from our hotel so we really enjoyed, and we hope to come back very soon
Busy street at all times of day and evening. Lots of shops, stalls, bars and restaurants also street entertainers .Great a atmosphere . Love it !
This is the main drag in Playa del Carmen. No cars allowed. Lined with shops, restaurants, etc. Extends for about 25 short blocks in a straight line. It has the laid back charm of old Mexico interspersed with more modern stores and even a mall or two with more upscale wares. While busy during the day, it really comes alive at night when the bars and restaurants are at their peak of the day. Great people watching. You will be besieged by vendors wanting you to visit their shops or restaurants or give you a massage, take you on a tour, etc. It's just part of the culture and tourism is so important to them that competition for your money is keen. All in all an enjoyable place.
Depending on where you are at on the strip, you can find high end stores, souvineer stores, bars, restaurants and kiosks to book tours. If you've never been, you will be a little surprised. Very touristy, but definitely worth a visit. Prices are higher here, so try to eat and buy souvineers off 5th.Also, store ownersare very annoying, but that is everywhere in Mexico.

This place is great if you want a fun Mexican experience!
The restaurant is also a bar which means the ambiance is always lively and kicking.
It actually gets its name after the large bottles of beer in Mexico. It is an open air vicinity, and you can indulge in Mexican beers, including craft beers , as well as tequila and mezcals. The food is awesome, some of their best dishes include, burgers, ceviche, and tacos.

Caiman is a popular, lively, cheap bar just off 5th avenue.
The atmosphere is super chilled, and they often have great music playing or live events.
Prices are cheap, the waitresses are lovely and the service is perfect.
This particular bar is perfect for first dates or meeting new people. Every night of the week you are guaranteed to see people sitting outside, laughing, joking, and generally just having a great time!
As we’ve already discussed the women in Playa are the creme de la creme from all over the world.
If you are looking for a relationship, or to simply hook up and have fun, or even just meet new people, my advice would be to try and meet them in the day. It’s super easy in the day to get chatting to lots of people. You can meet them in quirky coffee shops, bars, or at the beach.
At night time women may get a little extra cautious especially if you’re in a club and there are lots of creepy guys around, they are a lot less likely to give you their number.
So, try to meet them in the day and head out at night together. That way you get to know each other a little bit first before hitting 12th, or somewhere a little more low-key if clubbing isn’t your thing.
You won’t be short on nightlife in Playa del Carmen. Every night is a Friday night here.
If you want to party, a good place to start would be on 12th. This particular street is filled with all the best clubs and bars.

I’ve been getting lots of mail on this subject, so I thought I might follow up with a little more detail. I’m getting asked the same questions, so I thought I can answer a few of those and save us both some time in the process.
First, question is always, how much at the strip club? It depends on how much fun you want to have in the process but to be honest, it isn’t as cheap as many believe. If you’re drinking beer with a lady, the cost of that drink for her is usually $15-$20 US to start. By the time you pay the house for the use of a private area and the girl, it can get kinda expensive. At the end my math, it will cost between $200 and $300 US to get drunk and laid in a strip club. You can have a great time, naked girls dancing and giving you hand-jobs under the table and what not, for $100 to $150, but to get laid, it can be pricey, depending on the club you’re in.
Hourly escorts are really the way to go unless you wanted to do the drunk party with wild, naked chicks thing, which is, really really fun! Usually comes out cheaper or about the same to just do an escort. The thing is, most of the guys that come here for sex, are married and wanting to have a little fun away from home for a few days. They want to have a hot little number in private and not have the whole world know it. For that guy, the hourly escort is the way to go. They are fairly cheap, usually very hot and know their get in, and get out service quite well. If you are going to use an escort, here is a few things to know.
First and most important, they are notorious for not showing or at least being late. If you use the Internet pages, like Craig’s list for example, those girls will have about a 50% show up rate. Of those that show, half will be late. I think that is to be expected, it is Mexico and everyone is late here. When they do show, they may or may not be the one in the photos, but they are usually still very nice. Just plan on waiting, no matter the meeting plan, so I’d suggest you do it in a bar.
As for how you can meet, I always suggest you do it someplace close to your hotel and in public. It is the safest way for you and her. Some hotels discourage escorts from coming into their hotels without their man with them, so meeting elsewhere and escorting her to your room avoids any problems. It is best to reserve your room as for 2 persons, so that the hotel does not ask you about that. Most would not, but if they do, it will be because the hotel employee is trying to take advantage and gouge you most likely.
If you want to make it easy, don’t stay at an all-inclusive or large private resort, that is for sure. They have cumbersome and expensive “day or evening passes” that will be required and since most are outside the city area, the ladies usually also add a taxi fee as well. Stay in the downtown area at one of the little boutique hotels along 5th Avenue if you want an easy and cheap way of doing the trip. The hotels are small, private and the ladies work that area without adding transport fees. Just google “5th Avenue Playa Del Carmen hotels”” and you’ll find lots! The bus station that has hourly shuttles to the airport is right there as well. Most hotels are within walking distance and those that are not, are just a few minutes and dollars taxi ride away.
So how much will the hotel room escort cost? A tourist rate is usually around $150-$200 US an hour and the rate drops the longer they stay. If they charge $150 for the first hour, they usually charge $100 for the second and maybe $75 after that. Check Craig’s list and you will see the local rate. It is better to really use the hotel concierge or bartender though at the end of the day. As I said, the Internet ladies are really bad about standing you up. And of course, you will have already popped the Viagra by then. If you use the local guys right there, they almost always show up and are even more often on time, or closer to it anyway. If you don’t like what you see, just tip her cab fare and say you have to go and you are fine. Always tip at least cab fare, whether you have sex with them or not. Kinda proper.
