๐ŸŽฎ Play Classic PC Games on Android With This Open-Source Project

Remember those old-school PC adventure games? You can now play many of them on your Android phone using ScummVM, an open-source compatibility layer designed for classic adventure games.

It supports a large collection of titles, including The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, The Dig, Broken Sword and many others. The current 2026.2.0 compatibility database lists hundreds of supported games.

Hereโ€™s the complete setup ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿงฐ What You Need

  • Android phone
  • ScummVM
  • A legally obtained copy of a supported game
  • The game's required data files
  • A file manager

Important: ScummVM itself does not provide commercial games. You need your own legally obtained game files.

A โ†’ Z Setup

1๏ธโƒฃ Download ScummVM

Go to the official website:

https://www.scummvm.org/

Download the Android version and install it.

2๏ธโƒฃ Check Game Compatibility

Before transferring a game, check whether ScummVM supports it.

Official compatibility list:

https://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/

You can search for the exact game and see its compatibility level.

For example, the current compatibility database lists games such as:

  • Maniac Mansion
  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Monkey Island 2
  • Sam & Max: Hit the Road
  • The Dig
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Several of these are rated Excellent in the current compatibility database.

3๏ธโƒฃ Get Your Game Files

ScummVM requires the game data files.

These can come from your own original media or a legitimate digital purchase.

Don't download random โ€œfull gameโ€ ZIPs from piracy sites.

ScummVM's documentation specifically explains that the required data files depend on the individual game.

4๏ธโƒฃ Create a Games Folder

On your Android storage, create:

ScummVM Games/

Then create a separate folder for each game:

ScummVM Games/
   โ”œโ”€โ”€ Monkey Island/
   โ”œโ”€โ”€ Day of the Tentacle/
   โ””โ”€โ”€ The Dig/

Keeping each game's files in its own folder makes management much easier.

5๏ธโƒฃ Copy the Game Data

Copy the required game files into that game's folder.

For example:

ScummVM Games/
โ””โ”€โ”€ Day of the Tentacle/
    โ”œโ”€โ”€ TENTACLE.000
    โ”œโ”€โ”€ TENTACLE.001
    โ””โ”€โ”€ MONSTER.SOU

The exact files vary by game. ScummVM's documentation provides the required-file information for individual games.

6๏ธโƒฃ Open ScummVM

Launch ScummVM.

You'll see the game list.

Initially it will be empty.

Tap:

Add Game

7๏ธโƒฃ Select the Game Folder

Navigate to:

Internal Storage
โ†’ ScummVM Games
โ†’ Your Game

Select the folder containing the game's data files.

ScummVM will scan the directory and attempt to identify the game.

8๏ธโƒฃ Let ScummVM Detect It

If everything is correct, ScummVM should automatically recognize the game.

You'll see something similar to:

The Secret of Monkey Island

instead of manually entering every configuration parameter.

9๏ธโƒฃ Configure Controls

Open the game's settings and configure:

  • Touch controls
  • Virtual mouse
  • Keyboard
  • Controller
  • Graphics
  • Audio
  • Subtitles

For point-and-click games, touch controls can work particularly well on a phone.

๐Ÿ”Ÿ Start Playing

Select the game โ†’ Start.

Your classic PC game should now run directly on Android.

ScummVM works by replacing the original game's executable environment with its own engine, allowing supported classic games to run on different platforms.

๐ŸŽฎ Add More Games

You can repeat the same process:

Game 1
   โ†“
Create folder
   โ†“
Copy legal game files
   โ†“
Add Game
   โ†“
Play

Your ScummVM library can eventually contain many classic titles.

๐Ÿ’พ Save Your Progress

ScummVM supports save/load functionality, so you can save your progress and continue later.

You can also keep the game data on accessible external storage where supported. ScummVM's modern Android file-access system was updated specifically to improve handling of external storage on newer Android versions.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ If the Game Doesn't Appear

Check these things:

1. Wrong folder

Make sure you're selecting the folder containing the actual game data.

2. Missing files

Some games require specific data files.

3. Unsupported version

Check the compatibility database for your specific version.

4. Corrupted files

Re-copy or reinstall the game from your legitimate source.

5. Wrong platform/version

Different releases of the same game can sometimes require different files.

๐Ÿš€ What You Can Do With It

Once everything is configured, your Android phone can become a portable library for classic adventure games.

You can use:

โœ… Touch controls

โœ… Bluetooth controller

โœ… Keyboard

โœ… Save/load

โœ… Multiple games

โœ… External storage

โœ… Custom graphics/audio settings

And because ScummVM is open source, you can also explore its source code and contribute to the project.
