Rodrigo Alves is known as "the human Ken doll" because of his surreal, plastic-like resemblance to Barbie's beau. But he's now in danger of losing his carefully crafted nose after dozens of surgeries left him with infections and scar tissue so extensive he can barely breathe.
Alves' 72 procedures have cost more than $750,000, and doctors have warned him that his surgical obsession may also cost him his health if he doesn't stop undergoing additional cosmetic procedures, he told the Daily Mail .
Alves said that as a result of tissue damage from multiple rhinoplasties, his nose is "sinking" and may collapse, leaving a hole in his face.
"I am scared, to be honest," he told the Daily Mail, adding that "each time is riskier than the last."
He explained that additional procedures were required to fix complications of previous botched surgeries.
"It used to be a want," he said of his procedures. "Now it is a need."
Cosmetic surgery, a specialization of plastic surgery, can have benefits for many people, including boosting self-esteem , said Dr. Alan Matarasso, a former president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. About 23 million cosmetic surgeries are done every year worldwide, and they're generally considered safe.
But like all surgeries, the procedures have risks including scarring, nerve damage, infection, and complications from surgical anesthesia. And having multiple procedures can compound the risk — one doctor told Alves on the show "Botched" in 2017 that having three surgeries in one year had "destroyed your tissue," adding that "the skin is no good."
"Ideally, you want to do the least amount of surgery that will make a patient happy," Matarasso told Insider. "Plastic surgery is safe. It's effective. It's ubiquitous. But it's not a haircut. All of these procedures have risks."
Many people have unrealistic expectations for cosmetic surgery, Dr. Dirk Kramer, a plastic surgeon in London, previously told Insider . But some can develop a psychological obsession with repeatedly getting surgical procedures, often for aesthetic reasons. This is rare, Matarasso said.
For some, the first surgery can open a "Pandora's box" of seeking additional procedures because they're never fully happy with the results, Kramer said.
That's why it's important to address an underlying issue of low self-esteem before considering cosmetic surgery, said Charlotte Markey , a psychologist.
"Self-acceptance is not just about how we look," Markey previously told Insider . "Data suggests that cosmetic procedures don't have a lasting effect on people's positive body images nor their general well-being."
If you have symptoms of body-dysmorphic disorder , a persistent feeling that one's appearance is flawed, you may be at a higher risk of surgical addiction, Matarasso said, adding that he works with psychiatrists to refer his patients to in some cases.
"Good plastic surgeons are psychiatrists with scalpels," he said.
Indicators that you should see a psychiatrist can include developing a strong, obsessive concern about a minor perceived flaw, having a history of other psychiatric issues, getting multiple procedures in a short period, and "doctor-shopping," or jumping from surgeon to surgeon for different procedures.
"The thing about plastic surgery is, as physicians, we shouldn't be operating on people unless they have realistic expectations coming in and a healthy and positive self-image," Dr. David Cangello , a plastic surgeon in New York City, told Insider.
Surgeons told Insider that if you're considering a procedure, start by finding a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and avoid people who won't list their specific certification or have another specialty.
Word of mouth is also a good way to find a good doctor, Matarasso added. He suggested asking a plastic surgeon in another city where they would go for a cosmetic procedure.
The internet, by contrast, isn't so reliable, since "everybody says they're board-certified in something," whether or not that's true or their certification qualifies them for the procedure you want, Cangello said.
At an initial consultation, a good surgeon should listen closely to why you want the procedure and what you're expecting from the results to help you decide what, if anything, best fits your unique needs, Matarasso said.
"If you're ethically doing your job well as a plastic surgeon, you're saying no to a number of patients when the risk isn't worth the outcome," Matarasso said. "The way I learned it is: I make my living on the people I operate on, and my reputation on the people I don't."
Ultimately, Matarasso said, the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery should not be taken lightly.
"Yes, plastic surgery can have emotional benefits or even physical benefits," he said. "But because it's an elective, unnecessary surgery, there are risks, and patients should be very rigorous about doing their homework."

We all have things we're interested in and get excited about. For some people, it's training for marathons; for others, fashion. The things we love shape our personalities and make us who we are.
But sometimes we can become passionate about our interests to the point of being obsessed. There are healthy passions, and then t here's spending hundreds and thousands of dollars trying to look like human versions of Barbie and Ken.
In 2015, French couple Quentin Dehar and Anastasia Reskoss, whose aim in life/reason for living was to become real-life Barbie and Ken, received many plastic surgeries to achieve their goals.
Quentin and Anastasia spent over $322,728 on procedures, including (but not limited to) lip injections, butt implants, cheek fillers, two breast jobs, ear reshaping surgery, Botox, veneers, teeth whitening, and nail extensions.
The most interesting part is that all these expensive treatments and surgeries were paid for by their parents.
Reskoss, who didn't feel especially pretty growing up, had her first plastic surgery procedure (a nose job) when she was 17. And a year later, she had a breast job — both paid for by her parents.
"I felt so much better after my first nose job and [breast] job. It was like having amour," she said. "My parents were so pleased with my nose job, too. I always had a tiny, ugly bump on my nose, but after surgery, it was slightly less visible. However, my mum and dad weren't so happy about my [breast] job. They didn't understand why I would want bigger breasts but they couldn't resist treating me to cosmetic surgery.
I was a good daughter. I studied hard and did very well at school. At the end of the day, my parents would rather have a teenage daughter who takes care of her appearance than one who takes drugs."
Dehar could also relate to not feeling good about his looks when he was growing up. At age 18, he had his first surgery (also a nose job), and a year later he had his first round of Botox.
"At secondary school, I just felt very average. I didn't feel like me. I told myself that I had to go back to the idol of my childhood and become Ken. I can't describe how much happier I was after my nose job and Botox injections. I felt like I was getting closer to becoming the real Ken," Dehar said.
Both Dehar and Reskoss had loving, wealthy parents who made sure they were well-educated and got everything they wanted, including massive Barbie doll collections.
"At one point, I had over 100 Barbies in my collection and I played with them all the time," said Reskoss. "I loved them! They were so beautiful."
Once out of childhood, their love of Barbie and Ken transformed from wanting to play with them to want to be them. "I adored my Ken dolls," Dehar added. "I had all the wonderful Ken accessories to go with them, too — the toy plane, the house, and the convertible car. I loved his billionaire lifestyle."
Dehar financed their Barbie and Ken lifestyle with the proceeds from his two successful cell phone shops. Like a scenario from a Barbie and Ken imaginary date, Dehar and Reskoss met at a boat party in Saint Tropez.
Reskoss described their magical meeting: "Quentin walked over to me and said, 'I've found the Barbie to my Ken.' It was so straightforward. We both knew we had met a partner who was going to enable us to become the Ken and Barbie we had always dreamed of being."
As they continued transitioning into the flesh and bone versions of the plastic dolls they love so much, not only did their parents call them Barbie and Ken, but they had planned to have their names legally changed to Ken and Doll.
Reskoss said, "It's so wonderful because Quentin and I have made all our cosmetic changes together and we look more like Barbie and Ken than ever. We complement each other. He's made me a better person and he's my best friend."
He helped her to become Barbie to his Ken, but spending money trying to look unreal and plastic isn't exactly a good indicator of having a strong character and being a good person.
Unfortunately, that dream Barbie and Ken life all came to an end in 2017 when Dehar broke up with Reskoss .
The reason for their split? Reportedly, it was because she dyed her hair brown.
Dehar said at the time, "I separated from Anastasia because I fell out of love with her. Ken does not like brunette girls. I wanted to spend the rest of our lives together morphing into the Ken and Barbie dolls we love, but Anastasia was no longer committed to that dream. She made that clear when she changed her blonde hair.
I’m a single and independent Ken now although it would be nice to find love again. I meet bimbos from time to time who show interest in me and I’ll take photos with them but I soon become suspicious of their intentions. Most of these girls just want the fame and popularity that comes with being with the ‘French Ken’.”
The previous year, Dehar was in a car accident, where doctors had discovered that his many nose jobs had caused him respiratory problems. However, Dehar appeared unbothered by this and said, “I think my nose is perfect. It’s 100 percent Ken. Having the complete Ken aesthetic is priceless for me and I’ve always believed it’s necessary to suffer to be beautiful.
But my nose has become too tiny after all my nose jobs and I do have quite serious respiratory problems now. My doctors were very concerned and they have advised that I redo my nose so I don’t suffer more in the future. But that won’t stop me from having other surgeries — I love being Ken.”
Sadly, Dehar allegedly died by suicide last year. In September 2019, French news outlets reported that Dehar had passed away .
He was found in his hotel room at the Hotel du Roi-Rene. The autopsy confirmed that it was a suicide.
Before his death, Dehar had left some cryptic messages on his social media pages, including a post on Facebook saying that he wanted to "forget everything."

Top 10 Bodybuilders you won’t believe exist
People get plastic surgery for many reasons. Some want to fix defects, and others are simply not happy with the way they look. These are the top 10 people whose quest for the perfect look have left them looking more like the dolls Barbie and Ken.

Ashton Clarke went out of her way to get the Barbie look, but she didn’t use plastic surgery. She gets it from blonde hair-dye, extensions, false tan, fake lashes, contact lenses and strong lipstick. She is also a multi-lingual PhD student just showing that looks can be deceiving.
Celso gave as much as he could to look like Ken. He had multiple surgeries that added up to more than £30,000. It wasn’t a one way system though. Celso made a lot charging £10,000 for public appearances. With that kind of money he could have made the cost of surgery back in no time. Sadly Celso has passed away after a five-month battle with leukemia , aged only 21.
At 16 Lolita may be the youngest human Barbie doll. She claims that she has had no surgery at all, which is truly remarkable if true. She does admit to using coloured contacts to give her eyes an unreal look, but apparently the rest is just makeup.
Like Lolita, Angelica claims to have never had any cosmetic surgery. This time though, her parents are the driving force behind her image. They hired a personal trainer for her when she was very young, and control her clothing choices as well as her diet. Despite being so involved with her life they actively encourage her to participate in revealing photo shoots, even while preventing her from dating.
For Blondie Bennett plastic surgery was not enough. To begin with she spent £25,000 on breast enhancements. The next step was to go beyond appearances. Blondie attends weekly hypnotherapy sessions in order to act more brainless, to better perfectly capture the Barbie fantasy.
Quentin and Anastasia took things to the next level. This couple are travelling the road of transformation together, collectively spending over £200,000 on plastic surgery. Their goal is to become the perfect living embodiment of the plastic couple, and they are even getting their names changed to match.

Alina is another human Barbie lookalike that claims she has never had plastic surgery. She says her features are naturally doll-like, and that she maintains the perfect complexion by staying out of the sun.
Pixee went to one of the most extreme lengths possible to achieve her goals. She says she wants to look like a cartoon character, and to that end she has had 6 ribs removed. This allows her to achieve a record-breaking 14 inch waist. That is so small she can fit her entire middle in her own hands.
Justin has viewed plastic surgery as the trademark of the rich and successful ever since he was a child. Since his parents did not approve he had to wait until he turned 18 for his first procedure, which he did by getting a nose job 4 days after his 18th birthday. Since then he has had almost 200 different surgeries modifying various parts of his body, including his shoulders, abs, biceps, triceps, and nearly all aspects of his face.
Valeria might be the most famous of all the Barbie lookalikes. This is particularly impressive considering she says that she has never had any work done on her face at all. Valeria admits to having breast implants and coloured contact lenses, but she says that her figure and face are a combination of natural factors and simple makeup. For a long time Lukyanova was surrounded in controversy focused on alleged image doctoring. In response she appeared in a number of live shows to prove once and for all that she is the real life Barbie doll.
