Plan B Does It Work
If you’re going to take Plan B, you want to know how it works. So let’s start with the facts.
Similar to birth control pills, Plan B works by temporarily delaying the release of an egg from the ovary, so there’s no egg to meet the sperm. No egg, no fertilization, no pregnancy.
Not ready right now, but think you might want to get pregnant in the future? Taking Plan B now to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex won’t hurt your ability to get pregnant in the future.
You can find Plan B yourself in the family planning aisle. There’s no ID or Rx needed, and no age requirement to purchase.
Since Plan B only stays in your body for a short amount of time, it’s not meant to be used as a regular birth control method. You can and should immediately continue taking your regular birth control—or start using one—after taking Plan B.
It won’t affect an existing pregnancy.
Plan B will help prevent pregnancy before it starts, but it won’t prevent any sexually transmitted diseases. You should always use a barrier method, like condoms, to prevent STDs.
Plan B shouldn’t be used as a regular form of birth control, as it only stays in your body for a short amount of time and works to help prevent pregnancy after only one instance of unprotected sex. If you find that you are using emergency contraception frequently, talk to your doctor about finding a regular birth control method that’s right for you—as regular birth control pills are more effective.
Keep in mind: Plan B won’t interfere with your regular birth control methods or make them any less effective.

On Friday, June 24, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , effectively taking away the constitutional right to legal abortion access. Abortion may soon be banned in more than half the United States and is officially illegal in Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Missouri, and South Dakota. According to Guttmacher Institute , a research and advocacy group for reproductive rights, a total of 26 states are “certain or likely” to completely ban abortion in the upcoming weeks and months.
The decision has caused a reproductive rights—and human rights—crisis, with many taking to the streets in protest and everyone from politicians to celebrities condemning the loss of safe and legal abortion access for people who can become pregnant.
Emergency contraception and birth control are still available and legal—though anti-abortion legislators have indicated contraceptives may be their next target. In the wake of Roe v. Wade ’s overturn, there has been a surge in demand for emergency contraceptives at retailers. According to reports , stores like Walgreens, CVS, and RiteAid are currently selling out or limiting purchases of Plan B, an emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken to prevent pregnancy. Plan B is not to be confused with the abortion pill —i.e., mifepristone and misoprostol, which are medications that terminate early pregnancy.
As Plan B becomes a lifeline during this critical time for reproductive rights, Glamour spoke to Sharon Malone , MD, ob-gyn and chief medical officer of telehealth provider Alloy , to explain everything you need to know about the emergency contraceptive.
Ahead, Dr. Malone answers all your questions about Plan B.
Plan B is a type of morning-after pill that’s not only easily accessible but also extremely effective at preventing pregnancy. “Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken up to 72 hours after an episode of unprotected sex or a failed contraceptive,” says Dr. Malone. “Plan B is available over the counter and contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin found in many birth control pills and in the hormonal IUD Mirena.”
Similar to birth control, Plan B delays or prevents ovulation so pregnancy is unable to occur. It can also prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg or stop a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.
For women who weigh more than 165 pounds, Dr. Malone recommends using Ella (ulipristal), another type of morning-after pill, which is more effective as an oral medication, though it does require a prescription. “Plan B is less effective in people who are overweight,” says Dr. Malone. (According to the World Health Organization , a body mass index, or BMI, over 25 is considered overweight.) “There are two morning-after pills: Plan B or its generic equivalent (levonorgestrel), which is available over the counter, and Ella (ulispristal), which is available as a prescription. Ulipristal is slightly more effective in preventing pregnancy, particularly in people with higher BMI.”
There are no major risks involved with taking the pill. “There is no estrogen in Plan B,” says Dr. Malone. “Risks are minimal, and the biggest issue is a failure to prevent pregnancy. If the next period is delayed by more than a week, pregnancy should be ruled out.”
There are two factors: (1) how soon you take the pill after having unprotected sex and (2) your body mass index. “Although the effectiveness of Plan B is higher when taken closer to the episode of unprotected or unplanned sex, it can be taken up to three to five days after,” says Dr. Malone. “The effectiveness is anywhere from 75% to 90% in preventing pregnancy, but that is decreased in people with higher BMIs. Although there has been a recommendation to double the dose of Plan B in people with higher BMIs, recent studies suggest that this is not effective in reducing ovulation.”
Despite the efficacy of Plan B, Dr. Malone believes the best form of contraception is an IUD. “For people of all weights, the most effective emergency contraception is the immediate insertion of a copper IUD,” she explains. “Obviously, this requires a doctor visit and is extremely expensive, but it is a great option for women who also need ongoing contraception.”
Plan B is not the same as medication abortion, a.k.a. the abortion pill. Medication abortion involves taking two pills. According to Planned Parenthood , the first pill is mifepristone, which stops pregnancy from progressing; it is followed by misoprostol, which causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. Medication abortion can be used within the first 10 to 11 weeks of pregnancy and is FDA approved.
In 2017 the FDA lifted in-person dispensing requirements for the abortion pill, making it available by mail. But according to the Guttmacher Institute, 19 states require the clinician providing a medication abortion to be “physically present when the medication is administered,” prohibiting the use of telemedicine to prescribe medication for abortion.
There are side effects after taking Plan B. Immediate effects can last up to five days, and it’s likely to throw your period out of whack for the next weeks or month. “Even though side effects listed are nausea, headache, abdominal pain, breast pain, and dizziness, the most common side effect is a change in the menstrual cycle,” says Dr. Malone. “The period may be delayed, come earlier, or be slightly heavier than normal.”
