In this study, we investigated the place of word-stress in an English sentence. We measured the degree of stress in the last and first syllable of each word in a sentence by the use of a stress-frequency chart. In this chart, the degree of frequency of the stress is represented by a vertical line. The results show that the most frequent stress is found in the first syllables of words, and the least frequent stress occurs in the second or the third syllables.

In this paper we are concerned with the placement of the word stress of English words, and how this is related to the degree of stress (or lack thereof) of the English word. As a first step toward this goal we have analyzed the words of English in the context of a general system of word-stress assignment. The system has been developed in such a way that it assigns the stress to a word by examining its meaning and the meanings of its constituent parts, as well as its syntactic structure.
The stress of words in English was measured in four groups of subjects. The first group was a group of native speakers of English who were unaware of the research. The second group was made up of native English speakers who had been exposed to the stress patterns of their native language and had learned the pattern. The third group consisted of native learners of English with the same exposure to the language. The fourth group consisted of a group of nonnative speakers of English.
