Pittsburgh infielder Nick Gonzalez gets major league call-up

Pittsburgh utilityman Bae Ji-hwan (25) was not selected again despite his outstanding performance in Triple A.

The Pittsburgh team announced through a press release on the 11th, "Infielder Nick Gonzalez will be called up to the Major League from the club's minor league Triple A team (Indianapolis Indians)."

He added, “In order to make room for Gonzalez on the major 26-man roster, infielder Alika Williams is being sent down to Triple A using the option.”

Gonzalez, who debuted in the major leagues last year, failed to make the 26-man roster for Pittsburgh's opening game this season. Instead, he started in the club's minor league Triple A, and as of the 11th, he had appeared in a total of 30 games and boasted an outstanding batting average of 0.358, 4 home runs, and 19 RBIs.

He also has an OPS combined with slugging percentage of 1.038. His batting average is second in the league and his runs scored (33) are first, ranking high in all offensive categories.

As of the 11th, Bae Ji-hwan, whose duties overlap with Gonzales, has a batting average of 0.375, 3 home runs, and 12 RBIs in Triple A. He also has an outstanding OPS of 1.025. However, the number of games played is 19, which is fewer than Gonzales.

Bae Ji-hwan was originally expected to be included in the 26-man roster for the opening game of this year's Pittsburgh Major. However, it was painful to suffer a hip injury at the end of spring training. He started the season on the injured list, has completed his rehabilitation well, and is doing well in Triple A, but it will likely take more time before he is included again in Pittsburgh's already distorted season plans.
