The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn German Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning German will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try. Why Pimsleur? - Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day. - Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life. - Proven Method – Works when other methods fail. - Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you. - Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning. - Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers. - Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn. - Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above. What’s Included? - 30, 30-minute audio lessons - 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading German designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent - in total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers - a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide What You’ll Learn In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills. In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future. Reading Lessons begin in Lesson 10 to provide you with an introduction to reading German. In addition, the combined Reading Lessons are included after Lesson 30. These Reading Lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. The Pimsleur Method We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”: The Principle of Anticipation In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind. Core Vocabulary Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson. Graduated Interval Recall Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory. Organic Learning You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture. Learning in Context Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success. Active Participation The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English. The German Language German is the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland. It is also an official language in Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Luxembourg. Nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language: about 77 million in Germany, 8 million in Austria, and 4.5 million in Switzerland. Tech Talk - CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.
Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.

I totally love this program. I have been living in Germany for a year and I am just starting Level III. I am at the point where native Germans take a few minutes to realize that I am not a totally fluent speaker. I was so excited when the first German native said "Aber Sie sprechen sehr Deutsch!" Now I hear it routinely. And as many people will stereotypically note, Germans are not shy in telling you when you speak incorrectly so getting compliments is a big deal! (As an aside, I have to say the Germans here have been lovely and appreciative of anytime we even try to speak German which makes it so much easier to put yourself out there and try) I understand a significant amount of what is spoken to me (particularly with Hochdeutsch speakers). Of course there are times when the conversation gets more complicated (or people speak heavy Bayerisch) and I don't understand but I know learning a language at this level will take time. I love the way the program teaches you naturally through repetition but not rote memorization. Many times I find myself responding to someone automatically without thinking as the program builds the connections in your brain from the beginning, starting small and building continually through the program. We have also used Rosetta Stone and Berlitz but neither have been as instrumental or successful in teaching us the language. Berlitz puts too much emphasis on early mastery of grammar through rote memorization which stifles the ability to speak. With Pimsleur you learn the grammar naturally through just hearing the way things are said, you begin to naturally put the correct articles etc as you have heard them together so often it is natural, you don't even have to think about it. I find this to be a very natural way to learn and the way we all learn to speak, not through learning grammar, but just through hearing how our parents spoke to us. For example we know to say "I am" and not "I are" because that is what we repeatedly hear, no one had to have us memorize those grammar rules. Rosetta stone is software heavy and although it is nice to see the words written, there is a lot less spoken word and it takes so long to get to the speaking part that I got almost no speaking or understanding of the language from this other than being able to recognize written words I had already learned through Pimsleur. So great, can't say enough!

I sing in a choir and found our Christmas repertoire will be entirely in German. I know nothing of the language, but thought this might be a good excuse to start learning. I've used Pimsleur before for Spanish, so I got the German version and use it during my commutes. Pimsleur is the best method I know for getting a foundation in a new language. The only way to really learn a living language is to hear and speak it. There are two common complaints about Pimsleur, that it moves too slow and that it uses a narrow vocabulary. I find however that the slow pace and repetition is essential for developing one's ear for the language and for learning essential forms. The narrow vocabulary lets one concentrate on these basics. Another method might cover more ground, but that is useless without assimilation. With Pimsleur, the basics are driven into your brain, and you don't forget them. When I used Pimsleur to learn Spanish I found that I avoided many of the typical Americanisms such as not distinguishing 'ser' and 'estar' or the inability to use the subjunctive that plagued other English speakers who learned from books. I had a better accent and ear for the language as well. I'm fluent in Spanish now, and I think it is because of the two months I spent with Pimsleur 1 and 2. By contrast I had learned Italian in a classroom setting. It took me years to feel confident in that language, and I never learned it as well as Spanish, despite four years living in Italy! I'm very happy with the German so far. Two recommendations: 1) the CDs are expensive. I bought used, and thought the price was very reasonable. 2) With Spanish, I never used the booklet. It isn't necessary for learning to speak the language, but helpful if you want to be able to read it. I was able to speak Spanish for a year before I became functionally literate in it. I hope not to make the same mistake in German.

The Pimsleur approach to language learning does work. It uses a technique called "spaced repetition". This method is a little boring, but you will learn a lot and remember a lot, for the time you invested listening to the CDs. The German I Pimsleur Language Level comes in a box with 16 CDs. Each CD has 2 modules of approximately 30 minutes, plus a reading lesson per module after module 10. As per the course instructions, you should listen to only one module a day. Also, you need to repeat each learning module until you get at least 80% of the phrases correct. In average, I have to repeat each module 3 times (morning, afternoon and next morning) to achieve 80% or higher understanding of that module’s lesson. I have tried other methods and I am very pleased on how quickly I am learning basic German vocabulary using the Pimsleur method. The only thing is that the Amazon add shows the original Simon and Schuster Pimsleur package, but I received the Pimsleur Approach Gold Edition instead. The difference between them is that the Gold Edition does not come with the reading booklet. You have to download it online to be able to do the reading part of the lessons. (It is funny how marketing people operate. At first glance, one my think you will get more, not less, purchasing the "Gold Edition" of something! ). However the price was good and I kept the Gold Edition.

Highly recommend this product

I sat through 5 years of German lessons at school and learned nothing. I served 6 years in the army and spent 4 years posted to Germany and only learnt very basic German. I spent 30 days with this pack in my van during commutes and I can now have a conversation with confidence. Highly recommend this product.

Audio language courses are great in theory. Ideally they’re easy to use, and you can take them anywhere. But even seem of the most well known courses will leave you speechless during a real life conversation.
They’re good for learning new words or grammar, but when it comes to raw speaking skill they simply fall short. This is where Pimsleur German stands out. It’s one of the few, if only, German audio courses that actually improves your ability to speak the language. Now, Pimsleur isn’t perfect. It’s known for its high price tag and sparse vocabulary. Still, the Pimsleur name is well known in the language learning community, because to a certain point: it just works. This post will point out of Pimsleur German’s unique features and how they can help or hinder your German learning.
