After Lesson 30, an original short story, broken down into 20 manageable segments (over one hour), is provided for practice reading Brazilian Portuguese. The Pimsleur Method We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”: The Principle of Anticipation In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind. Core Vocabulary Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson. Graduated Interval Recall Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory. Organic Learning You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture. Learning in Context Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success. Active Participation The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English. The Brazilian Portuguese Language Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 230 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal’s former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur’s Brazilian Portuguese teaches the São Paulo metropolitan dialect. Tech Talk - CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.
Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world’s leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called “Graduated Interval Recall.” This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.

The best Pimsleur Portuguese course was the original Level 1 released in 1990. It covered material that isn't reached until Level 4 of the "new, improved" editions of Pimsleur Portuguese. After 8 days and 8 units of Portuguese Level 4, I find it to be the worst of the Pimsleur Portuguese courses. The authors assume that purchasers go to Brazil to talk about how many children and siblings they have and where their grandparents were born. The course also wastes your time learning the names of people you've never heard of that you will never hear of again. In Unit 8, there is exactly ONE new word: caçula, which means youngest, a word I probably never will use. If I had to say youngest, I would say mais jovem anyway. When I stop to ask directions and about road conditions, I don't ask "Are you the youngest brother? or "When is your daughter's wedding?" There are repetitive drills on the names of various Bahian dishes, most of which I never encountered in 3 weeks in backcountry Bahia or elsewhere in Brazil. In sum, it's a big disappointment. This course should be withdrawn and rewritten to reflect the needs of travelers rather than what they talk about at Simon & Schuster. Update after Lesson 20: It keeps getting goofier. After about 20 repetitions of throwing white flowers into the sea to appease some goddess of a native religion, holding hands, saying "I am the middle child", and buying "bio-jewelry", whatever that is, Lesson 20 includes the following, some of which have been covered many times already: "I am lactose intolerant." "Let's go to a comedy show tonight." [It had better be silent comedy after studying Pimsleur.] "It snows in France in the winter." "We went to a baptism." "There is always a baptism because I have a huge family." "The baptism last weekend was of my nephew." "I have many nephews and nieces." Plus the names of more odd dishes that you'll probably never encounter in Brazil. Pimsleur teaches such a limited vocabulary that it's unfortunate that they have chosen to include obscure terms and words irrelevant to an American tourist rather than frequently used words needed to read the front page of a newspaper. UPDATE after complete of Level 4 and the first 6 lessons of Level 5: Level 4 improves near the end, from about Lesson 25 onward. The major improvement, however, begins with Level 5. The emphasis in the first six lessons of Level 5 is on fundamentals that should have been covered much earlier, including colors, parts of the body, rooms of the house, everyday expressions, and a greater variety of verb tenses. The main reason to persevere with Level 4 is to set yourself up for Level 5.

Having studied with all the Pimsleur Portuguese levels 1 -4, I greatly disagree with the two previous reviewers. There is a lot more new vocabulary in Level 4 than just talking about your family. This level delves into the food, architecture, fauna, history, and regional celebrations. You sort of do a "tour" of some other areas outside of Rio and São Paulo. I found myself researching further some of the topics mentioned in the dialogues. The cool thing is that I am now able to talk about these topics in Portuguese. There is a part where some of the vocabulary gets more into romantic talk (rated G) such as holding hands - and that might not be helpful for business people, and you are probably not going to spend much time talking to people about scuba diving around ship wrecks either (another dialogue). Some of the other levels are not perfect either - on level 3 I kept thinking, "Who uses traveler's checks any more? How old is this dialogue?" Yes, the speakers have changed at this level, but you have to keep in mind you will probably be listening to more than two people speak in Portuguese, and you need to train your ears to these differences. The dialogue speakers are totally fine at this level - again, I disagree with one of the previous reviewers. This is no longer an intermediate level, so you need to be challenged a bit and you are.

Level 4 is a total disappointment. It is clear that there was a change in author from levels 1-3 to level 4. The example sentences are totally useless and impractical. Pimsleur should be ashamed of putting out a totally substandard product like this. It is an insult and embarrassment to the brand and should be redone and re-authored by someone qualified.
