That’s the mantra at the Sunward Naturist Park, located on a 500-acre property near Calabogie.
The camp is complete with 35 trailer sites, a farmhouse, an island, several boats, a sauna, a volleyball area and fire pits. It’s a rocky but picturesque campground with rolling hills, pine trees and a deep body of water called Jamieson Lake.

The place seems like any of the other hundreds of campgrounds in eastern Ontario.
This summer marked the Sunward Naturist Park’s 30-year anniversary of nude swims, volleyball games, cheese and wine parties and movie nights. And for the roughly 50 members who routinely visit, the camp is a place where the definition of “normal” outdoor recreation is redefined.
“Naturism, nudism, it’s one of those things where if I need to explain it to you, then you don’t get it,” said Tony Milne, the 72-year-old co-owner. “It’s a feeling that you have that you don’t want to wear clothes, you want to be out in the woods, in the sun, in the air, in the water and not wear any clothes.”
Milne is aware of the criticism nudism receives, most of it connected to the assumption that the lifestyle is a sexual ideology, but he said this is an unfair misconception.
“To a lot of people, being nude means you’re going to have sex. … It doesn’t really have to go together,” he said. “If you’ve ever had sex with your clothes still on, you’ll understand.”
A lot of the criticism is connected to North American culture, which has a hard time accepting nudity, Milne said.
“If you mention nudity to people, they either turn into a 12-year-old version of themselves or they turn into the church lady,” he said.
Milne identifies as a lifelong nudist and explained there is little difference between the terms nudist, naturist or naturalist. The reason for the various names is to add a level of ambiguity, he said.
Milne added clothes create a class system, which the terms blue- and white-collar jobs are a reflection of.
“One of the things is, once your clothes are off, then there’s no class distinction anymore,” he said. “Everyone’s the same.”
Despite how much he enjoys being in the nude, Milne assured he isn’t opposed to wearing clothes, especially in the Canadian winters. “One of the best things I say is, ‘Dressed when practical, nude when possible.’ ”
Milne put this into practice on Tuesday afternoon, wearing a shirt and towel to shelter himself from the wind and low of 10 C.
Although Milne is a nudist, along with the majority of the members, nudity isn’t a requirement at Sunward Naturist Park— except in one place.
“The only thing we insist on is you be nude in the lake, because there’s thousands of places you can wear a swimsuit,” Milne said.
“Textiles” is the word nudists use to describe people who wear a swimsuit, and there are no textiles at Sunward Naturist Park. But it is a welcoming place for people interested in trying a nudist camping experience.
Ten years ago, Sarah Hardy, 57, was one of those newcomers.
“It was a bucket-list adventure,” she said.
But a decade later, she’s still coming back.
“It was a one-time thing, but the people were so nice and the environment was so healthy and clean,” she said.
Health was a big part of why Hardy keeps returning, as she said the camp helped her overcome a chronic dieting issue she battled for 35 years.
“There were people of all ages, of all body types, and my first reaction was, ‘Oh my God, there’s nothing wrong with me,’ ” she said. “It was life-changing for me.”
Hardy now runs a body-positivity workshop at the camp where people — predominantly woman — come and listen to various speakers at a farmhouse up the road. The event hosts a potluck lunch and an optional nude swim to finish the day.
A more recent newcomer was 63-year-old Christiane Poirier, who first visited Sunward in the summer of 2018 after attending Hardy’s workshop. She said she enjoyed the camp so much, she decided to come back.
“I just felt so welcome here that I knew it was the right place for me,” she said. “There’s something about walking naked, feet on the ground.”
It is common for newcomers to return, Milne said, evident by the fact the camp grew from around 10 attendees in its first year to more than 50 in Year 30.
Going forward, Milne said he would like for more young adults to come join, as he said the camp has a bit of an older demographic. But he said people of all ages are welcome and he knows that, after they come once, they’ll most likely be back.
“I want them to come and try it, to open their minds,” he said.
