What is Ankle Dislocation?

Ankle Dislocation can be defined as an injury that causes the separation of single/multiple bones in the ankle joint. The dislocation can be of various forms such as sprain, fracture, strain and cause immediate swelling and pain. Depending on the severity and location of the ankle dislocation, it can be categorized as posterior, anterior, lateral or superior. The most common amongst these is posterior. All kinds of ankle dislocation along with them brings a threat for affecting nerve and blood flow, if not treated and diagnosed quickly.

Types and Causes of Ankle Dislocation:-

Ankle dislocation is primarily caused due to sudden falls, sports injuries, accident injury and mostly all of them are accompanied by fractures or ligament tears. The various types of dislocation along with their causes are:-

Posterior:- This kind of dislocation is caused when a force pulls the leg backwards.

Anterior:- It occurs when the foot is forcefully moved in an anterior direction.

Lateral:- This occurs mainly when the ankle gets rotated externally or internally.

Superior:- Fall from a certain height causes the talus bone to push upwards and hence causes superior ankle dislocation.

In Ankle dislocation, once the cast is removed, it's very natural for your ankle to be stiff and restrict movement. This is where physiotherapy exercises kick in. By doing physiotherapy exercises regularly, the stiffness and the pain start to fade away and the normal movement can be restored. It also helps in preventing any future injuries. Few physiotherapy exercises for ankle dislocation are listed as:-

⮚     Try to keep the foot raised, with toes higher than your hip, when you are not walking.

⮚     After ensuring that you are completely comfortable, you can point the foot away and then try to pull it upwards and hold it for a few seconds at each end. This exercise helps to reduce movement restriction. Repeat the same when moving the foot inwards and outwards. This helps your muscles and joints to regain lost support.

⮚     Another effective way to treat ankle dislocation is the use of resistance bands. These are used to strengthen the muscles, joints and ligaments surrounding the ankle.

Note: We at PHYSIOREVIVE, provides customized exercise program to get the recovery in shortest possible time.
