I previously owned a ROG Xonar Phoebus (the full package including the desktop satellite unit, that allows for volume control, a mic jack, a headphone jack and ambient noise cancellation for your mic.) which was lost when my system was stolen. They grabbed the PC tower, but was in too much of a hurry to grab everything, so I still had the satellite. I bought this card as a replacement when I built my new system, hoping it was the same card, but simply packaged without the satellite unit. I was correct. After I got my system built, I plugged the satellite in and everything worked perfect. That said, this IS the same card as the unit in the full package and the Solo designation only indicates that it doesn't come with the desktop satellite unit. This is an awesome piece of hardware and a feature I like, is the full virtual 7.1 surround sound with headphones. The audio is great with an excellent signal to noise ratio, 7.1 surround (even with headphones,) 144KHz sample rate, the ability to store many audio profiles each with a wide array of settings. In my opinion, much better than anything Soundblaster produces and certainly light years beyond any integrated audio device. It's only real competitor is the Asus Essence series of sound cards which it shares many technologies with. The primary differences between the two can be summed up as: The Essence series is designed for the pure audiophile, while the Phoebus is designed for the Audiophile gamer.The only other sound card I will use is possibly a future model of this one. I use this card in conjunction with a set of Bose quiet comfort 15 headphones with either a modified cable insert to support a boom mic or an unmodified cable and no mic, depending on whether I am playing an online game with VOIP support or not. Highly recommended. It may cost a little more, but well worth it if you want the best audio experience.
I like this card. I would do anything to get the sound quality that this card gives you. I bought this card second-hand and not through Amazon, so I am not sure if this is a typical problem. But the headphones output produces noise interference if I'm running graphically intensive games - especially prominent if I am playing Starcraft 2. The noise changes depending on what's on screen, really. Despite the "EMI Shield technology", that's a lot of noise. However, I could fix the noise problem by forcing the jack input into the device a bit and pull it in a specific direction. Then I put my computer case on the jack cord to keep it that way. This fixed the problem completely, no noise. But this is kinda silly for such a high-end card. Not sure about jack microphones. People say that also causes interference. So you should use it with USB microphone, or gaming headset with USB microphone. Voted 4 stars because of the noise issue. But subtracted only 1 star because of amazing sound quality. I am using Windows 7, I had no driver problems. The noise is hardware problem.
The soundcard produces a nice sound and does what a good soundcard should do. BUT. There is a massiv problem with the Asus Xonar Phoebus series. After a cold boot there is a big chance your system didn't recognize the soundcard, hence no sound. The only solution is a warm reboot/restart. Then everything works fine. Until your system hibernates. Because after hibernation, the soundcard is gone again. This happens to me almost 4 out of 5 cold boots. Researching the issue I found this to be a comon problem for the series. Asus most used comment was: try another slot and do a clean install of the OS. I did both. I clean installed W7, W8 and W8.1. But the problem still remains. A problem my old Creative card never had. A problem that no other components in my system have. So unless you are prepared to accept loads of reboots, don't buy this card.

If you intend plugging in a mic, buy something else.
For an expensive, top of the range card this has one fatal flaw. Plug in a mic and there's interference / noise aplenty. I can't believe how bad this is and how little support or recognition there is from Asus. The internet is lettered with complaints about this issue (I wish I'd done some research first) and there's no fix. I've repositioned the card, tried it with different GPUs; gain set to 0 etc and the noise won't go away. Lots of people have resorted to plugging in another card or using an onboard mic to workaround the problem, Having said all that, the sound (without the mic) is fantastic, as is the Dolby software it ships with. The Asus software is a lot less intuitive (you have to "right click" the icons to bring up the options menu for example!) but good once you get the hang of it. Simple things like the illuminated ports make finding the right hole a doddle. Note this Solo version doesn't ship with the desktop mic / phone plug in adapter. I really wouldn't recommend it at all. The fault exists on the solo and ordinary versions of the Phoebus. Will try a few more settings changes but I think I'll be returning this.

Buzzing noise
Everyone I know complains about my mic making buzzing noise. Using my motherboard's sound card is fine. A lot of other users seem to get the same issue, so I'm assuming it's the sound card. In terms of audio quality, it's good I guess. Been using it with my dt990 pros.

A very nice sound card
A very nice sound card,give a great sound,my only gripe is that you cant record whilst you listen,i am assuming that's why they sell the breakoutbox for it for an extortionate extra wad of cash. You would love it when you would experience it!!! Be it Music or Gaming....
Great. Be it Music or Gaming.... I upgraded from ASUS XONAR DX. I can experience a 360 Degree improvement over the performance of XONAR DX. The only thing that I feel, the driver interface of XONAR DX was much more customizable than that of XONAR PHOEBUS. Anyway you would love it when you would experience it!!!
