What’s with breasts? Why do so many Filipinas want their breasts enlarged? And why is it that most men are more attracted to Filipinas with large breasts than those who are less endowed in that area?
In a statistics report released by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), over 23 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were carried out all over the world in 2013. ISAPS is the leading global organization with more than 2,700 board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon members in 95 countries. Of the 23 million, 1,773,584 procedures involved breast augmentation and that figure continues to grow every year. The almost 2 million breast augmentation surgeries is a huge number of women wanting to change how they look. So, what’s the motivation?
Perhaps, it could be pure vanity or maybe it is done to save a marriage. Or it could be an effort to keep a boyfriend from going over the neighbor’s fence. It could also be a stepping stone to be in the limelight and make it big in Philippine show business. Whatever is driving a Filipina to puff-up her chest, it is surely for some good reason that could benefit her. But first, let’s look at how boob-jobs started.
Brief Historical Account of Boob Jobs
Breast augmentation surgery, just like other cosmetic surgeries, was presented to Philippine consumers during the 1960s. The leading technique employed at the time was the injection of paraffin wax or other tissue-fillers – a practice which is now forbidden.
Consequently, over the years, “boob jobs” became very popular. According to data from the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery , it is the 2 nd most performed surgery on Filipinos. While there were several grumbles from patients that early versions of breast implants were dangerous and leaking, these reports were exaggerated.
In the Philippines, boob jobs can cost more than P100, 000. Performed correctly, this price covers the cost of hospital rooms, general anesthesia, surgeon’s fees and recovery rooms. Those with existing pre-conditions such as hypertension and diabetes can still go through breast augmentation surgery, with the approval of their physician. The intricacy and duration of the procedure differs and is dependent on the surgical approach being used.
There are 4 methods of inserting implants into the breast cavity — axillary (the entry point is a small cut on the shoulder), circum-areolar (the entry point is a small smile-shaped cut on the edge of the nipple’s areola), sub-mammary (where the entry point is a cut under the breast), and the rarely used umbilical procedure.
Patients can choose round or pear-shaped implants in various sizes from 100 cc (the smallest size) to up to 400 cc. Filipinos reportedly stick to the 150 to 200 cc range. It can be tailored to fit the patient’s lifestyle.
Why are Men Mesmerized with Big Breasts?
Men’s enthrallment with breasts begins from the instant he is born and such is reinforced by breastfeeding as a baby. As an infant, a man has primary drives that draw him towards his mother. He can, in fact, smell her milk. The coziness and security a child gets when he is nestled close to his mother’s breasts is one of complete protection from the external world. I know of many women who had that kind of surgery and they’re OK…they’re very proud of it…of course, I don’t have a need for that right now but if time comes and it will be necessary, and I have the budget for it, then yes, I will have it.”
Josephine (38, fulltime housewife) – I’m not sure I’d like to undergo that kind of thing…I saw pictures on the internet of how failed surgeries look like and they’re awful…I don’t know if I would take the risk….though right now, we have an issue with my hubby, I’m not sure yet how breast augmentation can help, but it might help…I really don’t know, I need to think about it.”
Alexis (42, business owner, divorced from Greek husband) – “Yes, I don’t see anything wrong with it. It’s expensive yes, but if I can keep my man that way, then it will be worth the cost and the effort.”
Tanya (18, college student, single) – “I’ve always imagined myself having large boobs, and I think, it would really be great to be walking along the streets with all those men ogling at my chest…but then, I can’t afford it right now. I heard, these surgeries are expensive….the cheap ones get botched, and that’s scary…”
Virgie (68, retired, medical doctor, married) – “Just like most surgeries, it will have its own set of side effects, so the fear of most women has some basis…for those who will want to go through with it, I just hope they will carefully choose their surgeons, think many times about what they’re going into, and really make a clear decision if large breasts are what they really want or they are just pressured of something….it must be done for the right reasons.”
Leah (45, lawyer, separated for 12 years) – “I am very confident of who I am, what I am, and what I have. Yes, I like looking at women with big boobs but its pure appreciation. I really don’t need those.”
Girlie (37, street vendor, married) – “Ano yun?” (what’s that?)…(after explanation of what it is) “Ay naku, wala nga kaming pambili ng bigas, eh, ano pa pambili ng bagong suso?” (Goodness, we don’t even have money to buy rice/food, how much more buying new breasts?).
While these women do not represent the entire mindset of Filipinas about breast augmentation, their views however, clearly demonstrate the current outlook of many women in the Philippines about boob jobs.
Finding the Perfect Shape and Size?
Women subject themselves to breast augmentation because they want to feel good about their looks. Most women evaluate themselves by what other women think or will think of their appearance and the views of men are secondary. This means that women have breast surgeries because of their own views and personal values, and not because of anything that has something to do with their breasts.
Naturally, women who have had cancer, or other diseases of one or both breasts, may understandably want to look as near as possible to what they were like before they had the surgical treatment. In this case, the psychological concerns are reasonably candid, as are the physical options.
However, when women become hooked to cosmetic surgery because of their pursuit to find the perfect shape or size or look, then, this writer believes, these women would probably benefit more from psychological treatment and not surgical intervention .
