Some examples of flat things include broken tires, piano keys, and apartment complexes.
Pettanko or Pechanko are Japanese slang words. They are widely used for female characters, especially in anime, who are almost-or-entirely-flat. Both terms are intended for comedic purpose. An equivalent US-American phrase for this could be “flat as a washboard.”
In anime, such characters typically come with a full-blown complex about their breast size that will trigger violent reactions when mentioned, once again for comedy.

Pettanko refers to a female character that places a great deal of importance on the fact that she is flat chested. It does not refer to characters that merely happen to be flat chested, but do not make any importance of this fact. The character may be extremely proud of the fact that she is flat chested, or extremely embarrassed of the fact.

Pettanko characters are also referred to as Delicious Flat Chest or DFC.

Pettanko does not specify any age group, pettanko characters range from adolescents to adults, although pettanko children and pre-teens are rare as they are not yet old enough to develop breasts.

Lina Inverse of Slayers is a pettanko character who was very self conscious and embarrassed about her small breasts. Mayumi from Shuffle! is a pettanko who is proud of her flat chest.
