I think it's no that they're more prevalent, but rather that it's more socially acceptable and the drugs/treatments for the transition are more easily available. I suspect that if that we're true in America, we would see a much larger number of transmen/transwomen out in public.
I'm not sure about your first question in regards to Thailand. As for your other questions about transgender people in general. They aren't necessarily born looking like the opposite sex. But they are born feeling the opposite sex. Every day you may wake up feeling like a boy and looking like a boy. But for some people their sexual features and the gender that they identify with are not in agreeance. So they may wake up every day looking like a boy but feeling like they are or were always meant to be a girl, it's usually through hormone treatments and surgeries that they being to look more like the sex that they identify with.
Thai people arent as judgmental because of having Bhuddist culture
Also; theyre born male - and transition into female because they are mentally female. Theyre just adjusting the outside to fit inside.this is just as prevalent in the west.. People are just afraid of the stigma
Gender is not binary and Thai people are more accepting of this fact than most other cultures. It is not dangerous for Thai people to express their gender in a variety of ways, thus, they have visibility. I doubt it is more prevalent.
So... I can't give the Thai perspective, but I can anecdotally guess its similar to Hawaiian "Mahu" culture. My Hawaiian friends told me that the natives don't subscribe to traditional gender rules like many western cultures, its more or lest dominant vs submissive. So when a family has a family of all males, the youngest child is brought up to be a girl. Any native Hawaiians care to chime in and/or correct what I've been told?
I'm in your boat buddy, i wanna know too
Sex Tourism Plays A HUGE Role One of Thailand's biggest economies is from prostitution and so many males have actually become trans-gender to make a living above poverty
I'm pretty sure the surgery and drugs for gender reassignment are cheaper there.
I asked the same question to our tourguide when I was Thailand. His response was that the money was just so much more than what they would get in most other jobs at that age.
I hate to say it I just think it's so easy for some of the men to transform into women. Little body hair (and facial hair for men), not much height or shape difference. Gay men that are into looking womanly no matter what country generally are better with hair, makeup and clothes than most women. I do think they are over the top girly in these pics as I never see women that dress like this, just like you never see women in the U.S. that dress like drag queens.
I live in Thailand , I get asked this question a lot. One of the reasons Is that it is affordable. Well relatively, comparing to more developed countries. the reason for that is, not always top of the line surgery, not as safe, sterile, etc. The other reason is how society treat ladyboys. there is discrimination, but in a very light form. It is really a perception of life. Thais mostly don't mind ladyboys at all. You gotta live here for awhile to get it, but to truly understand you need to be born here.
I lived in northern Thailand for 8 years- coincidentally, the part of Thailand that most of them are from, although my interaction with them was generally limited to professional encounters- usually with me selling something, occasionally where they were staff at a place I happened to be.
So the thing I want to cover is that besides the cheating/philandering part ('mia noy', literally 'small wives', are a thing there), gender identity is somewhat more openly complex. There's straight, then there's heterosexual- that is, some people have a specific gender identity and are interested in the other gender identity- and some people are a specific gender and are interested in the other gender. The 'full spectrum' looks something like this:
Straight, but into ladyboys/Tom if it's discreet/nsa
Straight, but openly into ladyboys/Tom
refers to self as straight but primarily interested in ladyboys/tom
practical bisexuals, refers to self as straight, equal interest in both genders and transgenders
practical bisexuals, into one gender or the other, but not as interested in trans of either gender (although, generally, not against it)
self-identifying homosexuals, primarily interested in same gender, but who might, in some cases, be interested in trans
self-identifying 'pure' homosexuals, who have no interest (sexually) in the opposite sex or trans of any variety
Trans who identify as their target gender and are entirely 'heterosexual' from that identity standpoint
Trans who are into their 'target hetero' identity and also into trans like themselves
'part-time' trans who have a more fluid gender identity
I'm not from Thailand, but I am trans. The real question is not why there are so many trans people in Thailand, it's why you see so few elsewhere: some estimates suggest that 1 in 200 people are trans, and that's roughly in line with Thailand. The rest of the world, there's a lot of people in the closet.
I used to live in Thailand for some years. gdj11 is correct but I'll add a little more. Thai people are by and large Buddhist and believe that a soul can be born into the wrong body. The family and community figure out whether a child has a boy or girl soul by the way they act. Then they treat the child like the gender they 'ought' to have been and the child conforms.
I'm not sure on how factual this is, but I heard it while travelling in Laos. Other people have addressed the aspects of Thai culture, I will chip in about our own culture.
Apparently if someone is born with indeterminate sex a decision is made at birth about what gender the child will be. We (in the West) have pretty rigid definitions of gender and sexuality and our choices surrounding children at birth reflect this.
So it is a culture thing on both societies part.
Actually, if I were to guess - it's a joke about child predators going to Thailand for child prostitutes. That's a thing also.
Her name is Nong Poy . She is very beautiful. Everyone in Thailand knows who she is and her story. She had gender reassignment surgery when she was 17 and now she is the most famous transgender actress in Thailand. She opened many doors for the trans community in Thailand.
In this album she is actually not a contestant, but a judge. However she was the winner of Miss Tiffanys 2004 (this is Miss Tiffanys 2014). The most surprisng thing is that she won Miss Tiffanys with no plastic surgeries done to her face (at that time). Many Thais could not believe it!
Check out her instagram . Shes awfully vain but I like following her cuz she posts lots of cute vids lol ( and she has a better figure than me, too... )
They are prettier, far more delicate and feminine than i've ever been. And I have ladyparts.
My vagina should be ashamed of itself.
If my girlfriend looked like that, I wouldn't mind them not having the lady parts.
Til that Thai ladyboys are 10 times hotter than this lady girl.
HaHahaha wow omgosh my first ever gilded comment and it's about me not being as hot as Thai transgenders. Amazing. Id like to take this time to thank all the cat pictures that got me here.
Edit two: I'm probably the only person to ever forget to thank the person who gave it to me haha. Thank you!
Many/most of them have lady parts too.
I just replied to another comment that they are over the top girly kind of how a drag queen is over the top theatrical/glizty - normal and even dressed up women are not that girly or showy.
I honestly wonder if they'd still want to transition if they were going to transition into a wildebeest of a woman like myself. Do you think they would? I don't know.
