“You Catholic girls start much too late; But sooner or later it comes down to fate; I might as well be the one… They built you a temple and locked you away; But they never told you the price that you’d pay; For things that you might have done.” Amazon, in its wisdom and algorithms, of which the former is frequently the basis for the latter, has been suggesting that I read Leila Slimani. She is a French-Moroccan writer whose literary credentials were confirmed when she was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 2016 for her novel “Chanson douce.” President Emmanuel Macron provided her diplomatic status when he appointed her to be his representative to the “Organization International de la Francophonie.” Slimani’s maternal grandmother was born in Alsace (née Ruetsch). Hum. It did make me wonder how much that algorithm really knows when it makes it suggestions. Been there, done that. I had this overwhelming sense of déjà vu when reading “Sexe et Mensonges” (there is an English language translation available: “Sex and Lies”). I was raised Catholic, with 11 years in the Catholic school system. It was a milieu with overwhelming similarities to what Slimani describes, which is why I led this review with that classic Billy Joel song about how, hum, “Virginia,” started “much too late.” The reality, for a man, though, is that I was NOT really subjected to the relentless brainwashing of “purity,” “motherhood,” “respect” “reputation,” “keep the legs together” and the all-important hymen. It fell almost exclusively on the girls. Enough to mess your mind up, about one of the best aspects of human existence. I heard the “echo,” enough so to turn it into a SNL one-liner: “Of course I’ll respect you in the morning.” Oh, the hypocrisy. “Do whatever you like, but keep it hidden” is the operative ethos, mentioned again and again by the women that Slimani interviews. I had to chuckle, as no doubt all too many Moroccans did, in reading that in August, 2016, Fatima Nejjar, 62, and Omar Benhammad, 63, were caught in their old Mercedes, on the beach in Mohammedia, “en flagrant délit d’adultere” a bit of French not requiring much translation. They were noted ideological leaders in the PJD, a conservative religious party that pushes for laws that force the hotels to check to see if the couple is actually married, thus forcing themselves onto the beach for a bit of fun as well as the humiliation of having the police check the handkerchiefs for sticky substances. Yes, about every year, it seems that we in America have yet another demonstration of the hypocrisy of our own conservative religious leaders also being exposed. In Morocco, however, as the female interviewees would frequently report: a “pourboire” for the police (a small bribe) usually settles the matter on the spot. The sampling of interviewees might have presented a skewed picture, but I think not. Generally, most of them actively sought the author out, after her first novels of the sexual mores in Morocco, and they wanted to “tell their story.” There was quite a bit of confirmation of the same overall picture: not much love, no preliminaries, and the women having to lay very still, unimaginative, for fear of hearing: “where did you learn that from?” Ugh. The sorrow and the pity. Also, I found it distracting that in a chapter in which a given person is being interviewed, Slimani would segue into other events not particularly related to that person, such as a rock concert by Jennifer Lopez or homosexuality. In ways, it was a trip down memory lane. I’m glad that de Beauvoir and other authors in the West have provided a much better, but still very far from perfect framework for male-female relations, where the hymen has largely been tossed into the dustbin of history. 4-stars for Slimani’s work and I will probably read another.

Time to open up, and reform this bullying machismo in Islam?

For me, nothing new. But surely most important in Morocco, as my brother tells me he can't find it there ( sold out, if you believe the official version)

Very insightful

About time someone wrote an open and honest book on this topic.
