The Petite Arvine grape is native of Valais, in Switzerland, from where it has crossed the border and spread in to the Aosta Valley. According to a study, the Petite Arvine grape derives from the grape Prié, native of the Aosta Valley and also grown in France.
The Petite Arvine grape is so called because of the size of its berries, petite is small in French. The grape not only is suited, but has a knack for growing in altitude, and for that reason it is nicknamed “grape of the glaciers.” Certainly adapted to the Aosta Valley's landscape, the Petite Arvine is a variety that is characterized by high intensity and pleasantness of its wines, as well as an inclination to ageing.
The Petite Arvine berry is white, small, spheroid with thin, solid, waxy, yellowish green skin. The bunch is medium, pyramidal, elongated, often bi-winged, and compact with a medium-large, pentagonal leaf and has medium vigor and good productivity.
The Petite Arvine grapes produces straw yellow wines, with intense and complex nose, floral, with hints of violets and wisteria. On the palate, the wine fresh, refreshing, with a lively acidity and medium to full body.

Taste: Full, soft and fresh with aromas of grapefruit, lemon, rhubarb and wisteria, followed by flavors of citrus fruits, honey, mineral notes and a surprising, but characteristic, hint of saltiness on the finish.
Age: Drink within a few years of harvest, the best can age for ten years.
Petite Arvine (puh-TEET ARR-vin) is a high quality grape whose origins are obscure and DNA testing has not found any relatives. It has a long history in the Valais region of Switzerland where it is almost exclusively grown today, but it may have originated in the Alpine region of Valle d’Aosta in northwest Italy.
Although the quantity of wine made is small, Petite Arvine is gaining an increasing international reputation as a high quality wine. It is considered the best white grape of the Valais region, where it demands and generally gets the best vineyard sites. These sites are often steep and difficult to work, in addition to which the vines are demanding to grow. Consequently, the wines are expensive to produce.
Petite Arvine makes very individual and characterful dry wines with excellent structure that are full bodied and have good acidity. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon, rhubarb and wisteria are followed by flavors of citrus fruits, honey, mineral notes and a surprising, but characteristic, hint of saltiness on the finish. While it is full and soft, it is also very refreshing.
It is best to drink Petite Arvine within a few years of harvest, although the finest wines can age for up to ten years and gain additional complexity. Petite Arvine is also used to make some medium-sweet and sweet wines from dried grapes.
Never forget the wines you love by saving them to Pocket Wine. When you do, they will appear under the My Wines tab and also be automatically added to the relevant grape variety and display the appropriate Style icon.

Petite Arvine

Floral hint of wisteria or gentian and fruit tending towards the exotic yet subtle spectrum, featuring pineapple, mango, passion fruit, grapefruit.
This wine is complex, concentrated, virile and intense. The rhubarb notes often come through, while the acidity can be high. The true signature of Petite Arvine is its subtle iodine-like character.
Genetically linked to grapes from Italy’s Val d’Aosta and neighbouring France, the Petite Arvine has been grown only in Valais since 1602.
Dry wines—seafood, shellfish, alpine pastures cheese.
Slightly bubbly—foie gras in terrine, parsley cheese.

Petite Arvine is the internationally renowned white Valais wine. It is a delicate grape, sensitive to wind, and it ripens late. As a result it demands the most exposure to sun, but preferably not in overly dry soil. Arvine gives a complete range of wines, each as exquisite and interesting as the last: the nervy dry version with its aromas of wisteria and grapefruit; the slightly sweet Petite Arvine with notes of rhubarb; and the many sweet flétris wines, often exceptionally concentrated, with very intense aromas of a wide variety of exotic fruits.
