Petit copain et copine
Does copine mean girlfriend or female buddy/pal? Same question for copain, the masculine version of boyfriend or male buddy/pal?
Salut M L,
Haha yes, two words that confuse many people. They are most often used to describe a school mate or class mate but they can mean boyfriend or girlfriend as well. Often to say boyfriend and girlfriend we will add "petit(e)" in front it, for example:
Boyfriend = Petit copain
&
Girlfriend = Petite copine
If ever you are confused simply ask by repeating the sentence but adding petit(e) in front of copain/copine and whoever you are talking to will understand your confusion and explain tout de suite.
I hope this helps!

Does Petit ami / Petite amie mean the same thing as Petit copin / Petite copine?
I have heard both being used but am not sure what the difference is.
Bonjour SisterLuna,
Yes, you can also use "petit ami" and "petite amie" to mean "boyfriend" and "girlfriend". Both are used interchangeably and as often as one another.
I hope this helps!

« Petite-amie » or « petite-copine » are both slightly childish expressions. You want to use « ma copine », or even « ma meuf » (« meuf » being verlan for « femme ») in a less formal context. Beware though, « meuf » can be considered degrading by some people, although it tends to change.
How do people refer to a long-time partner of someone if the relationship is quite serious, but they are not married? Sometimes "copine" sounds too casual. Does "partenaire" sound strange in French?
I remember hearing 'Mon mec' on television shows when a female character was referring to her fling/boyfriend. Any context on that, is 'mec' interchangeable with 'copain/petit ami'?
Even in English, "girlfriend" sounds strange when my 83 year old father uses it to describe his SO.
They're both fine. I don't think one is particularly more correct than the other, but I'm L2 so someone can correct me if I'm wrong!
Right - it's not that one is more "correct", it's just that "petit(e) ami(e)" sounds a bit more old fashioned or used in more formal contexts.
I've called my girlfriend ma conjointe in the past.
Copine. Personne n'a dit "petite-amie" au lycée :)
