Police are investigating how what is believed to be a package of cocaine washed ashore at a popular Western Australia beach yesterday. A member of the public found the package, which was wrapped in plastic and covered in shells and barnacles, at Cheynes Beach east of Albany on the state's south coast. Cheynes Beach Caravan Park owner Jo Marsh said a guest found the package, weighing about 1 kilogram, on the beach. Jo Marsh alerted police to the discovery. Police have declined to comment on the matter but the ABC understands the package has been sent for chemical testing. Ms Marsh said the number of shells and barnacles on the package suggested it had been in the water for some months. It comes nearly a year after police seized more than kg of cocaine from a wrecked boat near Peaceful Bay a week after three men were rescued from the ocean off Albany when their vessel capsized. The package was found at Cheynes Beach, a small coastal town about 40km east of Albany. New South Wales police recovered tightly bound 1kg packages of cocaine on a stretch of coast between Sydney and Newcastle in December worth tens of millions of dollars.
