What is it like to own a private jet?

I've never owned a jet aircraft. (Although I have flown regularly in jets and turbo-prop - prop jet - aircraft owned by friends.)
But, I have owned six different piston engined propeller driven aircraft. And for flights of 500 miles or less, the experience and the pleasure are much the same.
Here is an example of how lovely private aircraft travel is. I'm based at SMO - Santa Monica Airport, a city in Southern California adjacent to Los Angeles.
The distance between Santa Monica and San Francisco is 340 statute miles or 295 nautical miles.
The time for me to fly that in my 1944 Howard (a WWII Navy

The distance between Santa Monica and San Francisco is 340 statute miles or 295 nautical miles.
The time for me to fly that in my 1944 Howard (a WWII Navy plane, previously a 1930s single engine civilian aircraft) at 130 knots or 160 mph is 2 hrs and 15 minutes. (If my destination is San Jose SJC, where many of my clients have been over the years, then it's just a 2 hour flight.)
I drive to the airport and up to my hangar. I push the airplane out and drive the car in. I do my pre-flight inspection of the airplane that takes about 15 minutes.
I jump in start up, get my clearance to taxi or if I've filed for an instrument flight (under Air Traffic Control supervision the entire distance) I get that clearance. Within another 15 minutes, I'm in the air and on the way.
If I arrived at the airport at 8AM, I land in San Francisco (or Oakland which I prefer) or one of many nearby airports - San Jose, Richmond, Gnoss (Marin County) at about 10.40A.
When I arrive and tie down my aircraft, the FBO (fixed base operator) brings me my rental car and I’m on my way to SF.
Meanwhile, since I love to fly, I've had a very scenic and enjoyable time on my 2 to 2h20m flight.
If I start counting from the time I left the house, add another 15 to 20 minutes tops to the airport.
If I took the airline, I would've to drive to LAX (or Uber or cab it). I'd have to find and pay for parking if I drove myself.
I'm supposed to arrive at least an hour early, and officially, 1.5 hours early.
I'd be subject to the schedule the airlines of when I could depart, and later, when I could return.
I would have to go through security, taking off my shoes and my belt, removing all objects from my pockets, putting my baggage (and separately my computer) in various plastic trays on the conveyor.
I and my carryon would be subject to inspection.
Then, arriving at the gate, I'd have to wait usually at least half an hour before boarding began, and another 20 to 30 minutes for the boarding procedure to complete.
I don't have to describe to you the hassle inside the airliner putting my carryons in the overhead, getting seated and belted in.
Pushback would be more than 30 minutes after start of boarding, then taxi, then takeoff.
The in-air portion of the flight is only about 40 to 45 minutes. The Boeing is going 500 mph to my 160.
Then, after landing, there's the taxi to the gate, the wait sometimes to get a gate, and the debarking process. Which can take another 15 minutes if you're in the back of the plane.
After arrival in SFO or OAK, there's the long walk to either a car rental or a taxi area.
And then the ride into town and to the door of the office where I have business, or the hotel where I'm staying.
So, let's compare the airline to my flight in my own 71 year old propeller driven aircraft.
AIRLINE:
Home to LAX to gate: 3o + 15 + 20 = 65 min.
Wait at gate to seat: 30- + 20 = 50 min
Pushback to Arrival at SFO gate: 15 + 45 + 10 = 70 min
Gate to driving off in rental car or taxi: 30 min
Drive into San Francisco and hotel or office, normal traffic: 40 min
TOTAL TIME door to door: 255 min or 4 hrs 15 min
FLYING OWN AIRCRAFT
Home to hangar at SMO: 20 minutes
Preflight check of aircraft to engine start: 20 minutes
Taxi aircraft, wait for clearance, and takeoff: 15 minutes
flight time: 2h 15 min or 135 minutes
taxi aircraft after landing to private Fixed Base Operation FBO: 10 minutes
Secure aircraft, get rental car or taxi: 15 - 20 minutes
Drive or taxi ride San Francisco hotel or office: 40 minutes
TOTAL TIME door to door: 260 minutes or 4 hrs 20 minutes
It's the same amount of door to door time even though I'm flying at 1/3rd the speed of the airliner. If I were flying my old Bonanza at nearly 200 mph, then I'm there in 1h 40 minutes.
If I own a King Air turboprop, I'm flying about 300 mph and I'm there in an hour.
If I have a private jet, then I'm there in the same :45 minutes the airliner is and I go door to door in 2 hrs 50 minutes. An hour and a half faster than by airline.
For a pilot, flying yourself in the same door to door time as the airline is always far preferable.
For anybody, coming and going as you please is usually far preferable to the hassles of an airport and modern airlines.
For anybody, eliminating the public airport experience, and flying at airline speeds beats the airline almost always.
Having your own airplane, especially if you can fly it yourself, is one of the great privileges and experiences ever afforded a human being.
We are lucky to live in the era we've been in for the last 80 years.
I fear that a new era is coming in which private flying will be available only to the wealthy or super wealthy.
But, until that terrible day, I'm grateful for the pleasures of private aviation.
