Penny's character went from pretty girl to well-spoken woman very quickly, and that transformation totally comes through throughout the seasons.
The Big Bang Theory has been going on since 2006. For some of us out there it appeared right on the cusp of us being old enough to watch sitcoms (other than Boy Meets World, Fresh Prince , and other teen-oriented shows). This makes it pretty seminal in a lot of our lives. We personally love the fact that it looked outside the realms of typical sitcoms.
Rather than focusing on the same old family stuff, we met a group of intelligent young adults and their mishaps and follies. How to communicate, grow and (of course) dealing with girls are all features of the show. One of those central themes revolved around Penny, the hilarious next door neighbor and trying-to-be actor. Her character went from pretty girl to well-spoken woman very quickly, and that transformation totally comes through throughout the seasons.
And the actor who portrays this trying-to-be actor on the show? None other than the now famous Kaley Cuoco. Her blonde hair, gorgeous smile, and comedic timing made her the perfect foil to the overly-intelligent and hyper-awkward antics of Leonard and Sheldon, all the way back since the first fateful season!
Since it was the very early 2000s, as IMDb reminds us, it’s reasonable to expect a little bit of eyebrow raising when it comes to the styles we see. Most iconic are those early 2000s hairstyles which poor Kaley ended up becoming the victim of. Case in point: these flat curls which appeared in many episodes.
The other iconic 2000s hairstyle that Kaley seemed to wear often in those first couple seasons? The Friends -inspired bun, which wasn’t just any old bun. Oh, no. This was a bun with personality, which is a nice word for “highly crafted messiness”. This little hair halo was Penny’s “relaxed” look, which quickly disappeared in later seasons.
By season three the show was established, and looked like it was going to be around for quite a while. Not only did it feature an upgrade in styles (maybe because their budget started to grow) but it also gave us more of a blast from Penny’s past. Most notably this look from her young adult years. We remember rocking that hair too, and we regret it.
See, this is what we mean by growing up. Her style’s become much more polished than the stretchy, floral patterned shirts and low riding jeans Penny was almost always in in the first two seasons. Season three showed us that she had some more grown up outfits, and started to shift into hairstyles that suited her a little more.
Long hair Penny was definitely our favorite. Iconic in her casual wear, retaining her bright colors, and feeling even more settled in herself, this season’s Penny was the beginning of the character’s development from “girl next door” to “fully formed adult engaged in a friendship with her neighbors”. Honestly, we’re here for it.
We want to be clear, though: season 4 was still in that awkwardly-styled phase of 2000s/2010s style. The hair was adorable, but the clothing was still phasing out of the stretch jersey and floral patterns. We see a little bit of subtlety in her style, but she’s still the quirky Penny we know and love!
Is that Britney Spears? Nope! It’s just Penny and her friend Amy, who couldn’t be more opposite on the style spectrum. Penny’s outstanding style really is highlighted here. The low riding jeans are gone (thankfully), and she’s starting to wear outfits which suit her. Not to mention her luscious pop star hair!
Blazers, soft waves, and darker color palettes for her style really started to appear here. We personally think season seven Penny was the best. She wasn’t as polished and put together as her later seasons, but she wasn’t as young and wild as her early seasons. This was a nice middle ground in Penny’s maturity we’re totally here for.
But hey, red pants and flowery tops can still count as grown up, right? This fun ensemble was a good representation of everything Penny stood for: innocence, creativity, passionate individuality, and bringing some color into the lives of Leonard and Sheldon. She’s a great character, and somehow this style shows that even more than previous ones.
It seems like many stars took the plunge to get short hair at the same time. Kaley Cuoco was one of the first if memory serves, and she brought it to the TV screens in a big way. Not only does she seem to have more confidence in this season, but the short hair made her much spunkier than innocent. We’re into it.
And inevitably the short hair phase ends. It’s great for a month or two, but then it starts to grow out. Going from a pixie cut back to long hair (which is the trajectory Penny/Kaley took) can be awkward. There were certainly some growing pains with this style grow-out, but on the whole she still looked adorable.
See? How cute is this style? From the button up shirt (with a signature Penny pattern) all the way to the perfect side-part, this iteration of Penny is closest to our own personal style. Maybe that’s why we’re partial to it. Objectively, it was a bit of a deviation of compared to the rest of her looks, but not an unwelcome one.
Finally, the phase of a short-hair-grow-out that every person is relieved to hit. Not only does the style start to become more versatile, but the looks can be more defined. However, it’s certainly harder to make short hair hold its shape/definition for a long period of time. This phase gave us Penny casual, thanks in part to the shaggy hair.
But, like, not in a bad way. Just in that “I’m tired of dealing with these nerdy boys’ awkwardness” way. She certainly got a little more sarcastic in these later seasons. Maybe that’s just a natural part of growing up, or maybe it’s the way that the writers saw her going in order to make the most interest. Either way, we were stuck with casual Penny for a while.
A crisp white collar, casual sweaters, and slicked back hair: this was the kind of style that defined Penny in season ten, and we’re absolutely loving it. She was totally grown up here, although it’s certainly a bit of a deviation from the character as she initially started. The look is clean and chic, which certainly looks good on TV!
Remember when we talked about her pop star hair in the early seasons? She glowed up from that in a big way, and rocked movie star hair for much of the latest seasons. Paired with classic blue jeans and black shirts means that she was pulling off style without even trying. Even her makeup seemed to get a little more polished here.
She’s still good old Penny, though, with her fun shirts and bright colours. The messy ponytail might have been a signature look in early seasons, but hair and makeup even found a way to give that iconic style a glow up. Case in point, this outfit epitomization of Penny. Grown up but still totally her.
Space buns (or messy buns) were seen on Penny a few times, but these seasons were the ones that really showed us she could rock her old styles even with the new, polished Penny. All in all, she just comes across as a regular woman. Albeit with a bit of a quirky style. Although, we are getting the strangest urge to try pigtails…
All in all, Penny grew from the eager girl-next-door with a wild past to being a fantastic woman. Her style is grown up but not shy; she still rocks the bold colours and patterns, and her looks got fancier as time went on. If that’s how growing up is supposed to look, we can’t wait for season twelve of our lives.

The Penny Scene That Went Too Far On The Big Bang Theory

Actress Kaley Cuoco played Penny on "The Big Bang Theory" for 12 seasons, and in some sense, the entire series is predicated on her entrance into the lives of the show's principal nerds, and the various ways she lives up to and defies the blonde stereotypes that provide an early source for the show's unique brand of humor.
Fans will of course be familiar with the setup: Penny makes her debut in the pilot as the beautiful girl who moves in across the hall from the brilliant but socially awkward Caltech scientists Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki). The latter immediately becomes infatuated with The Cheesecake Factory waitress and wannabe actress. The tough Nebraska farm girl who prefers wine, shoes, and celebrity gossip to video games and comic books embarks on a nine-year will-they-won't-they relationship with Leonard that ends with the twosome tying the knot at last in the Season 9 premiere, "The Matrimonial Momentum."
Much of the humor on "The Big Bang Theory" is derived from Penny making fun of Leonard, Sheldon, and their friends for being geeks and from her own ditzy and flirty behavior. Penny and Leonard's unlikely romance is also the butt of countless jokes, reminding the audience time and again that when opposites attract, wacky and weird hijinks ensue. However, there are times when it's hard to ignore that Penny and Leonard are woefully mismatched, infusing the sitcom with moments that can be hard to watch. In fact, Season 7, Episode 12, "The Hesitation Ramification," contains a scene in which fans agree that Penny goes too far in her mistreatment of Leonard.
In Season 7, Episode 12, "The Hesitation Ramification," Penny is cast on an episode of "NCIS." After her scene is cut, a depressed and drunken Penny tells Leonard she's spent 10 years in California and she has nothing to show for it. Leonard points out that she has him, and Penny tells him he's right and proposes. When Leonard hesitates, Penny gets upset, takes back the proposal, and storms out of Leonard's apartment. Leonard begins to question if he and Penny have a future together, and it's obvious Leonard is heartbroken. Throughout the entire episode, Penny treats Leonard badly, particularly when he does something she perceives as criticism or rejection.
Fans took to Reddit to discuss this episode and specific scene, and their comments do not paint a flattering picture of Penny, with everyone firmly on "Team Leonard."
"I believe Leonard did the right thing by saying no to Penny's drunken proposal. If he did say yes to the proposal, I think he would feel like he would have been taking advantage of her in her drunken state," wrote u/j0shcon123 .
Another Redditor was particularly unkind in his assessment of Penny. "Penny is a legitimate alcoholic ... I don't remember an episode where she hasn't had a drink. Is there one?" asked u/Siwix .
"Penny is selfish, rude and sometimes cruel to the man she's supposed to love. Leonard doesn't seem to have any dignity left," stated u/epeters208 .
It's a pretty harsh take on our towheaded heroine — especially considering the delicate state the episode finds her in. It's worth noting that Penny has just experienced a major career disappointment, one that quite reasonably might make her a tad sensitive to any additional rejection in her life.
Perhaps Penny's reaction to Leonard's hesitation to accept her proposal on "The Big Bang Theory" would have generated more sympathy from viewers if fans didn't already have issues with their relationship.
There is no shortage of Reddit chatter devoted to why Penny is a terrible partner for Leonard. One Reddit thread simply titled "I hate Penny" consists of ruthless takedowns of the character. "She constantly fights with Leonard and walks all over him," wrote u/spolarium . Considering Penny's negative behavior after Leonard doesn't respond the way she wants him to after she asks him to marry her, this opinion is not without merit. Penny attempts to exploit Leonard to make herself feel better, while also taking advantage of his feelings for her.
Leonard actually proposes to Penny long before she pops the question. He first asks her in "The Big Bang Theory" Season 5, Episode 23, "The Launch Acceleration," and she responds with frustration and anger because of Leonard's poor timing (in part, anyway). As you might be able to guess, she ultimately tells him no. As some disappointed fans interpret it, in Penny's mind, rejection is only understandable or acceptable if she's the one saying no.

Penny's real surname remained a mystery when The Big Bang Theory ended. But, as it turns out, the show had already secretly revealed it very early on. As the only female character from the original sitcom, Kaley Cuoco's character, Penny Teller, appeared in all twelve seasons of the CBS popular show. Although she seemed to stand out from her nerdy group of friends, she went through tremendous personal growth throughout those years – in her own way, she truly became one of the gang.
After moving to California as an aspiring actress, Penny experienced years of failed auditions and disappointing acting roles, eventually prompting her to give up on her Hollywood dreams. When season 8 started, she became a pharmaceutical sales representative working with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch). Despite her initial hesitation, she gradually rose through the ranks and appears to be perfectly content by the end of The Big Bang Theory . After all, both her personal and professional lives turned out great. While the show gave her a mostly satisfying ending with the revelation that she was expecting with Leonard, there is one mystery that the sitcom never outwardly resolved: the question of her last name.
Penny's maiden name has been a pressing The Big Bang Theory query for years, and many expected that the finale would finally answer it. Unfortunately, despite the clamor for the detail, the showrunners decided to keep it a secret and maintain public curiosity even after the sitcom bowed out. Aside from this, they may have also come up with the decision because they have already revealed the information during the very early years of the sh0w. As spotted by u/Quell_Alma on Reddit, in The Big Bang Theory season 2 , episode 18, "The Work Song Nanocluster," Penny's last name was Teller before she became a Hofstadter. In the episode, Penny Teller started a new business making flower barrettes and called it "Penny Blossoms." At one point in the Big Bang Theory episode, Sheldon delivered a package of her materials, and in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, her full name was shown printed on the box.
The significance behind her last name remained uncertain, but Penny Teller's first name was decided even before the pilot for The Big Bang Theory was retooled to add Howard and Raj, with the show planned title being Lenny, Penny, and Kenny . The producers, however, decided to change "Kenny" to "Sheldon" to pay homage to one of the most prolific TV producers — the late Sheldon Leonard who was behind a string of hit series, most notably The Dick Van Dyke Show. Considering how Penny Teller sounds, it may have been a reference to American magicians Penn & Teller. Interestingly, Teller appeared in The Big Bang Theory playing Amy's father in the final season of the show, and Penny pointed out how the Fowlers' dynamic was similar to her and Leonard's.
While Penny Hofstadter was revealed to be Penny Teller in The Big Bang Theory season 2, one has to wonder if this was intentional. It's entirely possible that the show creators used the last name as a placeholder on the package, not even considering that anyone would bother to zoom in on the image.
