After nearly 12 years on air, The Big Bang Theory finally came to an end on Thursday night with a two-part finale that hit all of the requisite notes for the conclusion of such a long-running series: it paid off some of the show’s running jokes, offered a few moments of fan service, and gave its characters a chance to reflect on themselves and the journey they’ve taken before fans’ eyes. In other words: the elevator is fixed; Sheldon and Amy won a Nobel Prize, prompting Sheldon to realize just how important his friends have been to him on that journey; and we finally saw both of Howard and Bernadette’s children. Oh, and Sarah Michelle Gellar became the show’s final guest star. In many moments, it was a showcase of the show’s strengths. But the finale hit some notes that might ring sour to some fans as well, including this stunner: Penny, after a season’s worth of telling her friends that she does not want kids, reveals that she’s secretly pregnant—and, without any explanation of why she changed her mind, she’s now excited to keep the baby.
Before we dive into Penny’s pregnancy, however, a quick recap: Sheldon and Amy find out they’ve won the Nobel Prize for physics, and fly out to Sweden with all of their friends. Penny pukes in the bathroom a few times, and Sheldon worries that she’s sick—and contagious. When he tells Leonard, however, Leonard spills the news; Sheldon, as one might expect, is not emotional, but relieved he won’t be on the receiving end of an illness just as he prepares to give an acceptance speech. He tells Amy, who is excited but confused. Penny eventually tells her friends that the pregnancy was unplanned, but without any explanation for why she’s changed her mind about having kids in the first place. Raj, meanwhile, meets Sarah Michelle Gellar on the plane. Bernadette and Howard’s babysitter grows overwhelmed by their two children, leading the couple to tell Sheldon they think they need to go home. Sheldon gets angry, selfishly ignoring his friends’ concerns about their children. Both Howard and Bernadette, and Leonard, who is mad at Sheldon for how he reacted to the pregnancy news, say they’re leaving. In the end, though, they stay—and Sheldon, suddenly realizing the impact his friends have had on his life, thanks them from the stage as he accepts the prize, saying that without their support, he would never have gotten there at all. It was a genuinely touching moment, executed perfectly—down to Jim Parsons’s perfectly timed, “Is that Sarah Michelle Gellar?” (Turns out, Raj dragged her there somehow.) The finale closes on one final shot of them in the show’s favorite living room set, pushing Chinese takeout around on plates as per tradition.
The Penny story is not necessarily a problem on its own; some women do change their minds about wanting children after learning they’ve conceived by accident. The issue is how it all unfolded: viewers find out Penny has been secretly pregnant, and never see her find out the news or contemplate what it means for her. Instead, they see a character who has repeatedly stated her desire not to have children suddenly do an about-face for no discernible reason—cheerful and ready to bear children. Given the recent, alarming wave of punitive abortion restrictions cropping up across the country, including one that passed in Alabama just this week, this might might be the worst possible time to drop a story in which a female character gets accidentally pregnant and does not once contemplate her options.
Asked about the sudden about-face, show-runner Steve Holland told Entertainment Weekly that the decision was actually meant to serve as a callback to a line Leonard utters in the pilot, in which he meets Penny for the first time: “Our babies will be smart and beautiful.” The finale replayed that moment, among others, during a special “Previously on. . .” highlight reel at the top of the finale. “It was a special moment to us,” Holland told E.W. “To bring that back around in the finale felt important. It also felt a little bit like people were expecting it, so to write against it all season felt like a way to make that moment play as more of a surprise.”
The uncharitable read on all this would be that both a female character’s emotional experience and the option of abortion were both rendered invisible to pay off a male character’s fantasy of getting his hot neighbor pregnant with his babies. That, coupled with Amy’s sudden, puzzling desire to get a makeover after winning the Nobel Prize, is pretty frustrating. But this is The Big Bang Theory, a series that has continued unencumbered regardless of what any critic has said for more than a decade. It’s the longest-running studio sitcom in history. So spending too much time picking apart the low points of its finale feels somewhat pointless.
Either way, CBS clearly knows how important The Big Bang Theory has been to its success over the years. The Eye welcomed the sitcom’s cast and creator to the stage during its Upfront presentation on Wednesday, and dedicated basically its entire Thursday night to bidding the show farewell. The hour-long, two-part finale led into a season finale for Young Sheldon that also served as a crossover episode of sorts: young Sheldon tried to gather together a group of classmates to listen to the Nobel Prize winner for physics announced on the radio—but no one showed up. Sheldon worries that he’s going to be alone forever—that there’s no one like him out there. Then, the series revealed young versions of all of his future friends, all geeking out as well. From there, CBS aired a retrospective on the series, following Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki around the set as they plastered nostalgic smiles on their faces and discussed the behind-the-scenes of some fan favorite moments. And of course, Stephen Colbert welcomed the cast to The Late Show as well. And thus, CBS was left with just one Sheldon Cooper on its airwaves—at least, until a decade or so from now, when we will all presumably enjoy the premiere of Old Sheldon.

Looking trim and lean in her skimpy animal-print bikini, Penny Lancaster has put paid to recent rumours that she is pregnant with her second child.
The model, 38, showed off her slim and tanned physique as she sauntered by the pool on her holiday in Tenerife with husband Rod Stewart and their three-year-old son Alistair last week.
Penny had caused speculation that she was pregnant with her second child after stepping out in a loose printed floral dress at the annual Chelsea Flower show in London recently.
What bump? Penny Lancaster dispels pregnancy rumours by showing off her svelte bikini body in Tenerife
Blooming: Penny sparked rumours that she might be pregnant when she stepped out in this loose-fitting floral dress at the Chelsea flower show
It's now clear that it was just the unflattering fit of the mumsy looking frock that gave Penny the infamous 'bump'.
But the lingerie model, who married Rod, 64, two years ago and had son Alastair, has made no secret of her plans for a second child. However, Penny has suffered two miscarriages and has spent the past year trying to conceive.
She admits that it has been difficult with Rod's busy schedule, and that her biological clock is ticking.
Do ya think I'm sexy? Father of seven Rod Stewart, soaking up the sun in Tenerife, is keen to have another child with wife Pennyl
'Rod wrote in my Valentine's card, 'Let's make baby No2'', she said recently. 'And now it's definitely the right time. We will be trying for another as soon as we can fit it in - we're ready now. A little girl would be wonderful as it would be a little playmate for Alastair. We'll be happy to stop at that.'
She added: 'I think Rod's touring and running around interferes with things but we still have high hopes." Penny has also had precancerous cells on her cervix, which had to be removed with a laser. Stomach pains then revealed she had a cyst on an ovary.'
But her spokesman said: 'I'm sure it will happen eventually. They did manage to conceive Alastair perfectly naturally. It's simply a question of age. It does become more difficult the older people are."
Penny and Rod have been together for nearly nine years, and Rod is father to six other children from previous relationships, two of which are with his former wife Rachel Hunter.

Of course they had to get Penny pregnant, cause it’s inadmissible that a woman would choose not to get pregnant and have her decision respected. Why are they ruining all my series?
The Big Bang Theory | You're in my spot
How are they ruining the series? It was a full circle. In pilot episode, Leonard said “our babies will be smart and beautiful”.
Amy isn’t pregnant. Bernadette was pregnant twice because of her real life pregnancy second time around.
It’s strange after 11 seasons, now she decides she doesn’t want to have kids.. She should have made her feelings clear to Leonard when they were dating. It was a random and stupid storyline.
I understand that, and if Penny wouldn’t have said she didn’t wanna have kids, the final would’ve been the perfect closure. But she did, and was criticised because of it. I think that once the series gave voice to all those women that choose not to have kids regardless of other people’s opinion, they shouldn’t have taken that back. I just disagree with you, but thanks for sharing your opinion.
In pilot episode, Leonard said “our babies will be smart and beautiful”.
And Penny said more than once she didn't want kids. At no point did she give any indication that she'd changed her mind. We didn't even hear her say it, Leonard was the one who said "She didn't and now she does." There's no reason why Penny would change her mind or want to. It was lazy, stupid and insulting.
I wouldn't say it ruined the series, but it definitely ruined a big part of the finale and left the series on a sour note for me.
I 100% agree. Why a woman cannot have a fulfilled life with her career and her husband, why does she need to get pregnant to get a happy ending? Is it because they are planning a series with their children in the future? Then going to high school together? It is the only scenario where this decision would make sense.
What everyone seems to be mis-remembering is that Penny never wanted kids. As far as I remember, the subject never came up until the Zach story line earlier this season. That little subplot was put in just to establish that "Penny didn't want kids", which was a setup for the finale.
Please don't act like Penny's non-maternal side sustained you for 12 years. Because it only came up about 12 weeks ago.
Times like this I am glad to be a man so I can watch my favourite TV shows without concern for these issues. Damn I love having a penis, almost as much as I love women's rights. And you know what? I want to live in a world where a women has the same rights as my penis. No I'm not a hero, just one generous dick.
Give this man a clown to hit pls lol
The post is quality. QUAALLLLIITTYYYYYY
None of the Golden Girls got pregnant.
I don’t think penny getting pregnant ruined it but was kind of cliche and a forced yet predictable life moment for a finale.
Lenord agreed before of her not getting pregnant and respected that and now she got pregnant and she decided to have a baby, and you start to play the feminism card... Shut up already.
Feminism card? There's no feminism card here. I'm a grown man and I think it was total bullshit what they did, too. It was bullshit when they did it with Bernadette and it was bullshit with Penny. Both of them said they didn't want kids and aw shucks, pregnant. Guess we want kids now. There's ways for that to not happen, you know.
What's more, it should be perfectly ok for people to not have kids and be happy with their lives and choices. Lots of people are and we're a massively underrepresented part of society.
Penny didn't want kids, that should have been it, end of story.
When they did the whole thing with Zach and his wife, is when Penny changed her mind. In my opinion.
If I remember correctly, Penny was against Leonard donating to them. Leonard asked why it bothered her so much if she didn't want to have kids. This might be his only chance at fatherhood. It was durning/ after this arguement that she changed her mind.
I didn't have the impression that Penny was very against and very did not want to be pregnant, so much as she a) had no desire to be pregnant, and did not see herself as a mother; and especially b) did not want pressure and expectation from others that she should become pregnant for the usual sake.
Thus, when it happens that she unexpectedly becomes pregnant, it's not a stretch to see her accept and celebrate it, as it wasn't an expectation nor decision forced upon her.
penny got what she wanted in the end. She could have aborted. Stop being a whiny moron. The reality is ALL women want a child given the chance unless they have mental health issues. It's human nature.
No we don’t. Quite a few of us are very happily childfree.
