Penn State Lacrosse Beats No. 1 Maryland

Penn State Lacrosse Stuns No. 1 Maryland in Overtime Thriller

University Park, PA — May 25, 2025 — In a game that will be remembered as one of the greatest upsets in program history, the Penn State Nittany Lions lacrosse team defeated the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins 12-11 in a heart-stopping overtime victory at Panzer Stadium on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions (12-3, 4-1 Big Ten), led by a heroic four-goal performance from senior attackman Jake Morin, fought back from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. With just 1:32 left in the extra period, sophomore midfielder Ryan Carter fired a behind-the-back shot past Maryland’s All-American goalie, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

'This is what we play for,' said Penn State head coach Jeff Tambroni. 'Our guys never quit, and beating the No. 1 team in the country shows the heart of this team.'

Maryland (13-1, 5-1 Big Ten) had been undefeated coming into the matchup and was widely considered the favorite to win the national championship. But Penn State’s defense, anchored by goalie Jack Fracyon’s 15 saves, held the Terps scoreless for the final eight minutes of regulation.

The win puts Penn State in prime position for a top-four seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and marks their first victory over Maryland since 2019. The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season next week against Johns Hopkins before heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

'This is just the beginning,' said Morin. 'We’re not done yet.'
