The turning point came during a mid-November road trip to Minnesota. Down 3-0 in the third period, the Lions staged an unforgettable comeback. Freshman sensation Danny McAvoy scored twice, and Stevens made a miraculous glove save in overtime before Hughes buried the game-winner. The 4-3 victory sparked a 12-game unbeaten streak, and Pegula Ice Arena became a fortress once again.

The Frozen Four Dream

By March, Penn State was ranked #2 in the country, earning a top seed in the NCAA tournament. After dominating their regional bracket, they advanced to the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota—where they would face Boston College, a team stacked with future NHL talent.

The semifinal was a goalie duel—Stevens made 47 saves, and with 1:12 left in regulation, junior forward Ryan Walsh deflected a point shot past the BC netminder to send Penn State to its first-ever national championship game.

One Shining Moment

The final against defending champion Denver was a back-and-forth thriller. Tied 2-2 in the third period, Hughes took a breakout pass, split the defense, and roofed a backhander with 3.4 seconds left—sending the Penn State faithful into pandemonium.

As the team hoisted the national championship trophy, the roar of 'We Are!' echoed through the arena. For the first time in program history, Penn State hockey was on top of the college hockey world.

Legacy

The 2024 championship wasn’t just a win—it was proof that Penn State belonged among the elite. Years later, when Hughes lifted the Stanley Cup and Stevens backstopped Team USA to Olympic gold, they always said the same thing:
