What's the ideal penis length? Depends where you live.
A new survey conducted by British online medical website Dr. Ed asked women and men from Europe and North America about their sexual health and happiness. Respondents had to guess the length of the average erect penis and also answer what an ideal penis is, length-wise.
No matter what people thought the average penis length was, everyone's ideal length was always bigger. Some things really are universal.
Of the 2,121 respondents , between the ages of 18 and 75, 1,148 identified as male and 973 identified as female. Almost half of the survey pool was from the United States (1,055) while the rest lived in nine different countries throughout Europe. The survey did not account for sexual identity or ethnicity of respondents. And because Dr. Ed is a UK-based website, the results are measured in centimeters (1 centimeter = .4 inches).
While the study's results were intriguing, you might want to take the findings with a grain of salt. Because the researchers didn't account for sexuality, the definition of "ideal" is in the eye of the beholder. Is "ideal" in the context of a sexual relationship or in the context of self-confidence? And if you're a lesbian? Well, just take a wild guess about penis size!
We can assume that the survey was measuring heterosexual preferences because the conclusion reveals how important penis size is to women , but not how important penis size is to men. (It did, however, ask men how size affected their confidence .)
The research revealed that men believe both the average and ideal penis sizes are larger than what women thought.
On average, women perceived the average male penis length to be 5.5 inches (13.8 cm) and the ideal penis size to be 6.3 inches (15.8 cm). Men, on the other hand, thought the average penis length on average is 5.6 inches (14.1 cm) and the ideal length is 6.6 inches (16.6 cm).
When comparing what people believe to be the ideal vs. average penis sizes by country, Poland had one of the the highest bids. On average, the Polish respondents assumed the average penis size is 6.3 inches (15.7 cm) and the ideal penis size is 6.9 inches (17.3 cm).
The U.S. fell somewhere in the middle with American respondents reporting the perceived average penis size as 5.7 inches (14.3 cm) and the ideal length as 6.8 inches (17 cm). American respondents were pretty spot-on with their assumptions considering it's been reported that the average American man's penis length is 5.6 inches .
According to the data, only 10 percent of men are dissatisfied with their penis sizes, while 45 percent are perfectly content. The majority of women (67.4 percent) reported that penis size is "somewhat important" while 21.4 percent said it's "not important" and only 11.2 percent said it's "very important."
As researchers wrote in their explanation of the survey , perceptions of penis size are very different from actual penis lengths. "Men's worries about size occur in the context of many social pressures," the article reads. "Perceptions of penis size have become so distorted in the popular imagination that the reality is often ignored and exceeded by exaggerated notions of an ideal size... Is it any wonder that men often struggle with anxiety about this very personal issue?"
But penis size is only one small (or large?) piece of the sexual puzzle. "At the end of the day, there's much more to satisfying relationships and sexual confidence than this one simple measure," the Dr. Ed article reads .
So, when does the penis girth study come out?
Head over to Dr. Ed to read more about the survey.

Worried about your penis size? Relax, you’re not alone. At some point, just about every guy has wondered how their penis stacks up compared to the average.
Like many aspects of sex and anatomy, penis size is a subject that creates distorted perceptions of what’s “normal.” Most studies of penis size around the world show that the average penis size is, to put it simply, not quite as big as people may think.
According toa review of study data by researchers at King’s College London, the average flaccid penis measures 3.6 inches from base to tip.
When it comes to the circumference (the circular measurement around the penis), the average man is about 3.7 inches soft.
Erect, the average penis length is about 5.2 inches, with an average circumference of about 4.6 inches.
Not quite what you’d expect, right? From harmless bragging to porn-induced expectations about penis size, there are numerous factors that contribute to the belief that the average man’s penis is, well, bigger than the real average.
In this guide, we’ll look at some more of the data behind the average penis size. We’ll also look at whether or not dick size (or lack of size) is really an issue that you should spend your time thinking about.
Penis size is a common source of anxiety for men. Because of unrealistic expectations about what is and isn’t normal perpetuated by media and pornography, a surprising number of guys worry about whether or not their penis is big enough.
In an effort to help clinicians dealing with Body Dysmorphic Disorder and men feeling anxious about their dick size, researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London completed a thorough review of study data about penis size.
The review, which can be viewed online here , is currently the most comprehensive study available on penis size, drawing from a total of 20 studies with more than 15,500 participants.
As stated above, the researchers found that the average penis size -- using a sample of more than 15,500 men -- was 3.6 inches (9.16 cm) when flaccid and 5.2 (13.12 cm) inches when erect.
The study data should come as a relief to many men, confirming that the “six inches” average that’s often promoted in media or casual conversation isn’t even close to the reality of penis size.
What’s particularly interesting is the difference between the real data on penis size and the perceived average penis size people report when surveyed.
In a survey conducted by UK company Health Bridge Limited, researchers asked people to state what they believed the average penis size was. The survey featured men and women, drawing data from thousands of people located throughout Europe and North America.
The average penis length given by participants varied by country, with Poland reporting the biggest perceived average penis length at 6.18 inches (15.7 cm). Austria, Italy, Germany and the United States all featured estimates well above the real average, at 6.14 inches (15.6 cm), 6.02 inches (15.3 cm), 5.83 inches (14.8cm) and 5.63 inches (14.3 cm), respectively.
For the most part, survey participants overestimated the average penis size by about half an inch to one inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm). Of the 10 most widely surveyed countries, only the UK guessed an average size below the real average, estimating that the average erect penis is 4.88 inches (12.4 cm).
The survey data shows that most people overestimate the average erect penis size, often by a significant amount -- a fact that can create anxiety, frustration, and insecurity for many men.

In the same survey, women were asked how important penis size was to them in a partner. The survey respondents were given three options to choose from: very important, somewhat important and not important.
The overwhelming majority of female survey participants, 67.4%, said that penis size was only somewhat important to them -- that it wasn’t a major concern or of overriding importance in their choice of partner.
Another 21.4% of female participants said that penis size wasn’t important at all. In fact, only 11.2% of women that responded to the survey said that penis size was very important to them when choosing a romantic partner.
Scientific study data also seems to support the idea that penis size just isn’t a major issue for most women. In a 2015 study of penis size and sexual attraction (all participants were residents of California, 18-65, sexually experienced), researchers found that only 27% of women had ended relationships, in part, due to a difference between their preferred penis size and the size of their partner’s penis.

Well, fellas, you knew this section was coming. While we’re not really in the business of making men feel, ehm, inadequate, we also understand that some men simply need to know. We get it. That said, there aren’t any CDC rules or clinical guidelines to follow when trying to accurately measure the size of your penis. Luckily, it doesn’t appear to be rocket science, either.
If you want to get an accurate measurement of your penis — for scientific purposes, of course — here are some practical tips:
First, decide whether you want an erect measurement or a flaccid measurement. You can do one or the other, or both — it’s a free country.
When you’re ready to measure, take a ruler and place it at the base of your penis.
If flaccid, take the tip of your penis and, without pulling or extending it, hold it to the ruler’s edge to find your measurement
If erect, carefully place the ruler’s edge against your penis and observe your measurement.
Take a piece of smooth thread or dental floss (we personally recommend against twine to avoid scratching your penis skin) and cut it to a length of a few inches.
Whether flaccid or erect, find the widest part of your penis, and gently wrap the thread around it, making sure to carefully note where the thread intersects.
Carefully remove the thread from around your penis, while making sure not to lose track of where the piece intersected with itself.
Place it on top of a ruler, and find your circumference in inches.
And there you go. Simple enough, right?
Certain aspects of your body can be changed through things like diet, exercise, medication and grooming. Penis size -- save for factors such as erection quality -- generally isn’t one of them.
Combine this with the fact that the vast majority of people overestimate the average penis size and that the vast majority of women simply don’t care about penis size, and it quickly becomes clear that the best approach is to not fret too much about your dick size.
Instead, a better approach is to focus your time, energy and effort on improving the aspects of your sexual performance and appearance that you do have control over, from preventing hair loss and improving grooming to increasing your erection quality, and most importantly, taking care of yourself.
The takeaway here, fellas, is that you might be concerned about your penis size, but it’s likely that your partner is perfectly happy with you. However, if you’re interested in measuring your size and seeing where you stack up according to the data, the process is simple enough and doesn’t require any specialized tools.
If you’re worried about your performance in the bedroom, the best thing to do is talk to your partner/s. Have a conversation. If you’re still worried, there are other options.
While you can’t really change what you’re working with down there, you can ensure peak bedroom performance. It seems as though there has been a lot of discussion about dick pics on blogs that last few days. I don't understand the fascination with sending people photos of a penis particularly your own. Is there ever a time when it is desired by women? This is excluding sexting by the way. Is it common for women to send men they are attracted to, photos of erogenous zones? Please post your thoughts.

My girl gets upset if she doesn't see my penis every day. I mean every. day. I'd be in bed and she'd text me "I haven't seen your cock yet :(". So I oblige her. Hey, if she wants to see it, why wouldn't I show it to her? But, I would never send a picture of my penis to someone who did not specifically ask to see it, so that may just be me. I realize there are guys who will send a dick pic to random women and figure one of them is bound to ask to suck it or something. I don't know. To me, having a picture of my most intimate body part rejected would not be worth the potential reward of finding the rare group of women who actually enjoy random dick pics. It's far better to save them for the women who actually seek them out (and there are a lot more of those than you think).
Only when asked for. My opinion (and view) on those are that they are usually unsolicited and perverted. I find that only sick or desperate people would send an unsolicited picture of their genitals. At least in the male spectrum.
I don’t think nudes in general are appropriate. It’s just really dumb to send them, even if you trust someone something can happen and boom. Dick pics are especially dumb though, because it’s just a picture of a dick. Am I supposed to become horny or smth?
Guys, being visual can become aroused by pics. Problems come in when guys don't understand that most women don't have the same reactions to visuals.
I pretty much never want dick pics. Like excuse me but it looks like a poisonous mushroom usually. Sometimes they look like the worms from the tremors movies. I'll usually report guys who send them unless I specifically asked for it.
Why have you requested them before? Curiosity?
I could say the same about the roast beef, meat curtains.
I’m pretty sure she hasn’t. She seems like a gay prude
At Michael, yes I have. If I'm planning to have sex with someone I like to see the goods before hand sometimes.
Women's vaginas look no more attractive than most penises I'll agree there. There are always exceptions though, and just because its ugly doesn't mean I won't get a bit creamy from the sight.
At cannuk, I'm not a gay prude thanks. I do appreciate both genders but I still prefer men. Hetero-flexible is the term I like.
It's not a gay prude, just a crazy lib with inventive vocabulary.
If they are asked for, sure. I don't like guys that tweet unwanted penis pics to me.
What would make someone request a photo of their penis? Curiosity, or is it a form of foreplay these days?
... been asked by online girlfriend once. well i never take picture of my face coz i'm shy. as for penis even if it's leaked out people won't have and proof that it's mine. well it's just a picture of body part i don't mind.
I have had them requested, yeah. Just don't send them unsolicited. Unless the context is heavily sexual, and that is a... strong point for you. But like, often you will just be making a fool of yourself.
It’s ok if you ask for them and nudes are kind of a crucial part of some long distance relationships
I really only wanna see 1 penis and that’s my boyfriends.
Nah. No one needs to see a picture of your dick. They look better in person anyway.
Only for scientific purposes are they appropriate or for sexual but both must be consented to first
Well I would never send someone a dick pic if they wanted it or not. But I seriously doubt they would like one if not asked for
Well, I don't know about others, but I'd definitely want guys to send me dick pics, whether I'm sexting them or not.
No i don't think it is ever appropriate. I would rather see my husbands penis in person then a picture of it.
The only time you should send a woman a picture of your penis is if: A> She's your urologist. B> She specifically asked you to send it to her.
I think it's okay if you have gotten another girl. But if y'all in the beginning stages like the first few days, week or so then I wouldn't advise doing it unless it is approved by her
The only time you ever should is if she specifically asks for it. Normally they hate them
If not asked for, it seems like it goes into the realm of flashing, and perverted.
If not asked for, it seems that it may go into the realm of flashing and perverted.
Yup, i am disgusted to even think about it.
Yes there is. Usually in the heat of the moment.
It’s only appropriate if she asks for one
Only stupid people send dick pics and other nudes.
