Pairing, shallowing, rocking or angling. These are techniques women use to increase their sexual pleasure during vaginal penetration, according to US scientists who surveyed more than 3,000 volunteers – all in the interest of health and wellbeing, of course.
Results from the “OMGYES Pleasure Report” are published in the journal PLOS ONE . The survey, which was completed by women aged 18–93, was developed following pilot research that identified the four distinct methods.
To “orgasm more or make vaginal penetration more pleasurable”, 70% of women have used pairing, defined as “when a woman herself (Solo Pairing) or her partner (Partner Pairing) reaches down to stimulate her clitoris with a finger or sex toy at the same time as her vagina is being penetrated”.
Shallowing is described as “penetrative touch just inside the entrance of the vagina – not on the outside, but also not deep inside – with a fingertip, sex toy, penis tip, tongue, or lips”, and is applied by 84% of respondents.
Rocking refers to “the base of the penis or sex toy rubbing against the clitoris constantly during penetration, by staying all the way inside the vagina rather than thrusting in and out”, a method used by 76% of women.
The most common technique, used by 87% of respondents, was angling: “rotating, raising, or lowering the pelvis/hips during penetration to adjust where inside the vagina the toy or penis rubs and what it feels like.”
Experiencing sexual pleasure is important for women’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing throughout life, according to lead author Devon Hensel, from the OMGYES Research Group at the company For Goodness Sake in Berkeley, US, along with colleagues from Indiana University.
Sexual pleasure has been linked , for instance, to more happiness and less depression, stress and anxiety. Research has also found – perhaps unsurprisingly – that women’s sexual pleasure is associated with greater relationship satisfaction, intimacy and commitment.

“Viewing sexual pleasure as a critical scaffold to women’s wellbeing is important because it reframes their enjoyment of sex as a fundamental human right, rather than as a medical or psychological problem to be ‘solved’,” write Hensel and colleagues.
In recognition of this, sexual and reproductive health organisations state that “pleasurable” and “satisfying” sexual experiences are integral to sexual rights.
Hensel’s team notes that it’s important to understand individual differences in achieving pleasure, empowering women to explore what works for them rather than what “should” work and to find the words to better understand and communicate it.
“A woman having access to a wider stimulation and penetration vocabulary may increase her satisfaction with her sexual communication with partners,” they write, “which in turn may have positive implications for both relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction.”
To devise the survey, the team first recruited more than 4,000 English-speaking women from around the world via social media to answer open-ended questions such as “What discovery have you made that really made vaginal penetration more pleasurable for you?”.
To explore the topic more deeply, about a quarter of the sample then took part in follow-up interviews via video chat. Analysis revealed the four distinct methods (among others), which the researchers could not find pre-existing names for.
The subsequent survey was conducted in a widely representative sample of 3,017 US women, with “descriptive names, tasteful diagrams, animations and videos of women of all ages explaining their own experiences,” says co-author Christiana von Hippel.
“We hope bringing this important knowledge out of the shadows into the light of day with clear language will empower women to better recognise, communicate, and act on what they want.”

In findings that will no doubt make well-endowed millennials rejoice, 8 inches is the optimal penis size when it comes to making women orgasm, according to a survey by dating site Big One. The same survey showed that climax-inducing capabilities drop off dramatically in anything bigger than 9 inches.
Or as Big One so eloquently puts it, “Size does matter, but bigger is not always better.”
To “compare orgasm success rate with penis size,” the self-proclaimed “large penis dating site” surveyed 4,761 women across their entire network spanning general, casual dating and other niches. They asked the survey participants about the last time they had sex, how big their partner’s unit was and if they achieved “orgasm via penetration.”
The randy research — which displayed the juicy results on a cucumber diagram — found that 8-inch penises induced orgasms at a 44% success rate. Coming in second was 9 inches — nearly the height of a bowling pin — with a 42% success rate.
However, don’t feel bad if you’re not blessed with such proportions, because pleasure-causing potential plummets sharply with anything longer.
According to the sexperiment, both 11-inch whoppers and 4-inch willies help women climax at the same success rate: a mere 30% of the time. (One wonders if the phallic findings hold true for Jonah Falcon, whose manhood is the world’s largest at a mammoth 13.5 inches.)
And skill is just as important as size, per the research.
The study found that 3-inchers (which is the threshold for a “micro-penis”) aid orgasm in a quarter of women while “more than 1 in 10 men with 1 inch still hit the spot.” Not to mention that a large number of survey participants deemed girth to be crucial when it comes to experiencing rapture in the sack.
Nonetheless, the penis-measuring research is not an exact science. “These are averages, and there will always be exceptions,” writes Big One. “If he doesn’t measure up, he can still deliver, and equally, if he’s massive, he can still disappoint!”

Have a look at our penis gallery - obviously this features lots of photos of penises, so those who may be offended, please do take a look because you're wrong.
It had been dubbed ‘The Night of a Thousand Cocks’, and while there may not have been quite so many as that, The Penis Gallery remained an event which felt ground-breaking in discussing the taboo of penis anxiety in such a forum.
The idea behind the gallery, which took place at The Book Club in Shoreditch, was to show images of penises in their relaxed states to show the variety of shape, size, and all the individual quirks which makes them all unique, and all valid. In a society steeped in free online porn, the ideas of what a penis should look like are dangerously out of whack – sexual dysfunction is massively on the rise amongst young men, as anxiety about performance and size is fuelled by this illusory world. In the spirit of our Festival of New Masculinity , we wanted to support men by getting real, and embracing difference.
As part of the event photographer and storyteller Laura Dodsworth presented some of the work from her Bare Reality series of books, which includes ‘Manhood’, for which she photographer 100 penises and spoke to the men about their relationships with them.
She told us that many felt their penises where the very essences of them, so that if they felt like they were too small down there, then they felt like less of a man. Even men with larger penises were conflicted, Laura read quotes from one man who said he used his penis “as a shield” to everything else and had developed self-esteem issues. The message of learning to love who we are, and feeling that we are enough, came through loud and clear.
Laura was then joined onstage by Anouszka Tate , Ant Smith and Dr Chloe Paidoussis-Mitchell for a panel discussion about the issue. In a wide ranging discussion, which took in questions from the audience, there were issues dealt with on boyhood trauma, the role partners can play in making people feel more comfortable about themselves, and sex education in schools vs sex education in the family home and communities.
Ant, author of the Small Penis Bible, felt the need to change the language around penises, where size always matters, while Chloe felt part of the danger in all this is that men often bottle up their trauma and not ever talk through their issues. Anouszka, whose podcast Project Pleasure is one of the best out there, talked about the benefits of growing up in a body positive household, why unsolicited dick pics are never welcome, and why not all porn is bad porn: “you must pay for your porn!”
Here are some images from the event and the gallery itself:
