The album is a classic. Eve Libertine takes the reigns as lead vocalist this time around. The feminist empowerment is the main course and the songs have their hooks. Ear worms for sure. The record was mastered by Alex Gordon at Abbey Road Studios and sounds better than I have ever heard it. Packaged in paper sleeves ( just like the original) but the record itself is secured in poly lined sleeves. An absolute gem this album is. I highly recommend it for fans. Even for newcomers.

Thanks to a local college radio punk/retro program, I discovered Crass after ignoring them when they were at the height of their powers- after all, in that time there were LOTS of great new bands to fill your record bin. They fit squarely in the same niche as other faux-nihilistic artists of the time such as Lena Lovich, Gang of Four, or The Slits, with their angular rhythms and squarky guitar attack keeping things discordant but danceable, and their backstory alludes to a lifestyle which was if anything, as anarchistic as their music. Give Crass credit for sticking to their guns artistically- they were pressured from all fronts to "soften" their controversial (at the time) political, sexual and religious commentary, but did not back down one inch from their personal views. This helped earn them a place alongside other excellent musical "loose cannons" of the time who were basically ignored by 99% of the the music buying public. Apparently their other efforts are not as cohesive as Penis Envy, but I haven't had the chance to listen to them. Get Penis Envy and light up a clove cigarette while dressed in black for a flashback to the early 80's.

Classic, and very well packaged. :D

Great album, came in fantastic condition with fast shipping. No complaints here

The remastered version blows! The vocals are drowned out by everything else. This is one of my favorite Crass releases, but make sure to get the older versions.

meaningful lyrics, from a band that help change the face of Music and punk forever

LOVE this album but do not like the new mix. They brought the guitars forward and have pushed the vocals back which was a huge mistake IMO.

Politically-charged, sarcastic feminist punk at its sharpest.

Another great album remixed and wiith a disc of extras for your aural pleasure.

Vinyl LP pressing. "Crass were the missing link between counterculture hippies and punk's angry rhetoric. The fact they got so big with no radio play and music so uncompromising is testament not just to their communication skills, but also to their generation's willingness to experiment. The band released a series of records that spliced art-school (in the best possible way), avant-garde collage with white-heat, punk-rock anger. "When Crass got mad, they got really mad, and they were ranting and raving at the UK during a mean and miserable time, when Labour buckled and Thatcher took over. The music of Crass can only properly be understood in this context - the decaying nation, state brutality, the miners' strike, the Falklands war, and the death of 60s idealism. Sadly, we're living through similar times now. Are we too cynical to create an answer like Crass did?" - The Guardian

Libertine takes the lead vocals throughout Crass' third album (the one exception being de Vivre 's turn on the unnerving portrayal of hospitals and waiting for death, "Health Surface"). A powerful and challenging record, Penis Envy uses the brutal, cruel description of sexism and rape on the opening track, "Bata Motel," as a launching point for a comprehensive rip through societal control and repression throughout. Smart enough to target everything from the mechanics and business of selling romance ("Smother Love") to gender stereotyping ("Systematic Death") and back again, lyrically the sharpest cut is toward those who choose to accept such a system rather than reacting back against it. Libertine 's delivery places her as one of punk and post-punk's most distinct vocalists; if her atypical approach to singing has parallels to everyone from Poly Styrene to Pauline Murray , she consciously avoids sugaring the pill as the album continues on its way. One of her finest moments comes on "Where Next Columbus," a smart, blackly humorous riff on notions of discovery and control, on every level from economic and political to personal and back again. If immediate musical variety isn't as evident on Penis Envy as on Stations of the Crass ' studio cuts, more than a few twists and turns are evident. There's the sudden burst of noise and layered series of voices on the environmental lament "What the Fuck," the nervous crawl into aggro charge on "Poison in a Pretty Pill," even a pretty little guitar figure to start off "Berkertex Bride." Phil Free 's lead guitar work is especially effective, often a trebly white sheet of electric aggression, while Penny Rimbaud 's drumming gets more varied and interesting as well. Crass' always blunt cover art reaches new but gut-wrenching heights as well, featuring a prepackaged sex doll on the front and gutted pigs on the back. The conceptual effort closes with "Our Wedding," an intentionally sappy romantic number done for a mainstream magazine as a prank.

Review Summary: Newly-wedded wife, this shouldn’t be your life.
“You force-hold me above the ground
I can't get away, my feet are bound
"Poor little fuckers, what a sorry pair
Had their lives stolen, but they didn't really care
Poor little darlings, just your ordinary folks
Victims of the system and its cruel jokes!"
"But would you see the fire in the world where you exist?
Will your hard eyes register the pain?
Are you so cold that there is no distress?
Where there’s death would you give death again?"
Album Rating: 4.5 Classic fucking album and a class review.. a phallus-shaped pos in a white dress..
Album Rating: 5.0 @butcherboy ❤

There better be 99 ratings on this album by the time I wake up, or so help me
Album Rating: 5.0 Didn't even put on my pajamas yet. That's a pretty good rating too :D
Great review man, I'm convinced. Definitely going to give this a go, especially to hear that last track. Also it being on Bandcamp automatically makes me more likely to check it.
Album Rating: 5.0 I knew the links were a good idea! Hope you like it.
"Crap just utter crap. Unrealistic politics, shitty music, and bad vocalists. They aren't even pretty! where is the appeal? Why would anybody buy it? It's no surprise that only teenage anarcho punks with no idea about REAL politics buy this dreck"

This 07 soundoff is amazing. It almost reads like satire but I really hope it's authentic. they aren't even pretty lol
Album Rating: 5.0 I saw that! I can't tell if it's genuine, but I can confirm the vocals are not pretty.
Album Rating: 5.0 Bump so I can see the word penis in the "new comments" section before the site crashes

I'm totally negging you just to balance out butcherboy. (jk). Seriously, really nice job. Not familiar with the band, but I particularly like the name of their former lead singer.
Album Rating: 5.0 Thanks Diva. I don't know for sure, but I think this is the only Crass album that doesn't have Ignorant at all. What a cool name though, right?
I'm thinking of stealing it for myself. How does Diva Ignorant sound?

Or maybe just Deev Ignorant.
Album Rating: 5.0 Diva the Ignorant sounds like a killer barbarian's name, so that one.
Album Rating: 5.0 Of course the one day I post a review, the site goes under. Just peachy.
And a hurricane's about to, as this album puts it:
Spit on
Shit on
Totally confuse
Fuck up
Muck up
