A GROUP of brave surgeons in Taiwan have been exploring the effects of electricity on penises.
Concerned that blokes worldwide were risking toasted todgers - and obviously not overburdened with willing subjects - the dedicated researchers conducted the experiments on themselves.
Their report, titled "Determination of Human Penile Electrical Resistance and Implication on Safety for Electrosurgery of Penis" is a slightly alarming insight into a field of surgery that at first begs the question: "What's wrong with using a scalpel?"
Surprisingly, electrosurgery is not as er, shocking as it sounds.
Pioneered by Dr William T Bovie in 1914, it's a relatively safe and hygienic method of cutting tissue using highly concentrated electric currents.
The current passes through a loop of fine wire, which can be used to lop off warts and moles and such, or through a fine needle in order to make incisions.
The current is concentrated around the needle tip and dispersed through the body into a large, metalised plate stuck on the patients back with gel.
To cut deeper, the surgeon powers up the needle with a foot pedal or a switch on the tool.
The heat generated by the current simply causes water in the tissue to boil and part, resulting in a "steam envelope" which cuts cleanly and with barely any sense of pressure.
A different current can be used to coagulate the blood in small vessels, meaning surgery is virtually bloodless.
And when it comes to waving cutting instruments anywhere near a patient's penis, the less blood the better - not to mention burns.
Which is where the intrepid men from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in Taiwan come in.
Dr Vincent Tsai told news.com.au that it's not uncommon for patients to choose electrosurgery for penis operations such as circumcisions and the removal of hypospadias.
But to his knowledge, little research had been done into what extent it should be used on penises and just how much electricity a penis could take.
The only way to find out was to attach "surface electrodes the two ends of penis", he said.
Taking into account that not all penises were created equally, the team also noted that the "impedance of the shaft" can be depicted by "some measurement and calculation".
Voltage was applied. Anaesthetic was not.
Dr Tsai said the main concerns with penile electrosurgery was the potential to injure nerve and vessel tissue required for erectile function.
Field cases have found injuries can range from thrombosis to six days of paralysis to three weeks of disability and something called "nerve longitudinal split of axis cylinder".
Dr Tsai's research confirmed all of these and more.
"We would like to remind our colleagues that we should be careful when doing ES on patients' penis," he said.
"Potential and subclinical injury to erectile tissue caused by electrosurgery on the penis cannot be underestimated."
He suggested surgeons consider using less power and for shorter lengths of time. Or just switching to modern laser therapy.
And despite the alarming potential, Dr Tsai said no penises were harmed during the course of the experiment.

Circumferential Penile Electrodes electrodes are specifically designed to be worn around the penis for use with an electrotherapy device. Essentially they provide the gateway whereby an electrical signal is passed for therapeutic or sexual result. They are sold as a set of two electrodes with an un-stretched inner diameter of 2 inches.
A 2013 study conducted by Marc P. Schneider , Marc Tellenbach , Livio Mordasini , George N. Thalmann & Thomas M. Kessler titled: “ Refractory chronic pelvic pain syndrome in men: can transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation help?” . The clinical trial followed 60 men who suffered from chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) who’s average age was 46.9 years. The study found that 48% of the trials participants had a positive effect after 12 weeks of TENS treatment and the positive effect was sustained for 43.6 months on follow-up for 21 of those patients. Further results had also shown the majority of the patients treated had positive effects as well. The majority of the remaining patient felt pleased or delighted with the effects. No adverse events were reported.
Patients treated themselves at home for 30 minutes, using a TENS device twice per day at 80 Hz, 150 µs at the sensory threshold level.
While circumferential electrodes are not the only type of electrodes that can be used in pelvic pain TENS application, these electrodes that have a stretchy band to help increased comfort and approximation of the treating surface can allow easy re-use of the electrode and direct placement over the penile tissues. One of 2 leads and electrodes could be used depending on location and extent of pain, and depending on patient preference.
This electro-band sensor should be cleaned before the first use and immediately after each subsequent use . Wash and lather your hands with soap and flowing luke-warm water in the sink, then gently apply the same lather to the electro-band sensor and wash it thoroughly. Completely rinse hands and then gently wipe the electro-band sensor of all soap and residue with a damp clean cloth or paper towel. To wipe the electro-band dry, use a dry clean cloth or dry paper towel. Allow the electro-band to air-dry and when you are sure it is completely dry, store the electro-band in the original packaging . Do not use abrasive cleaners on the electro-band sensor. Do not expose the electro-band sensor to high temperatures. Do not submerge or use the electro-band in water. Do not get the electro-band sensor or band wet. Do not attempt to sterilize the electro-band or the electro-band sensor by any method.

A PENIS chastity device that made headlines for potential security flaws is getting an upgrade.
The makers of the sex toy have confirmed that a sequel is coming and it could be used to 'zap' someone's genitals.
According to Sex Tech Guide , Chinese sex toy company Qiui confirmed that it is making the new product called the CellMate 2.
It said Quiu hasn't released many other details.
Rumours earlier this year suggested the CellMate 2 could provide electrostimulation to the user's genitals, meaning the trapped penis could be shocked by a controller.
The original sex toy was billed as the "world’s first app controlled chastity device" and is reportedly used by tens of thousands of people across the globe.
The wearer's penis is placed inside a metal tube which can then be locked or freed from a ring that sits at the base of the genitals.
By connecting the toy to a phone via Bluetooth, a partner can control it with the push of a button on a connected app.
However, a major security hole unearthed by Pen Test Partners meant hackers could have taken control of someone's device instead.
"Remote attackers could prevent the Bluetooth lock from being opened, permanently locking the user in the device" researcher Alex Lomas said.
"There is no physical unlock. An angle grinder or other suitable heavy tool would be required to cut the wearer free."
The flaw found was linked to the smartphone app that connects to the Cellmate, Alex said.
In January 2021, a hacker reportedly attempted to trap the penises of people using the internet-controlled chastity cages and demanded a ransom.
The cybercriminal was said to ask for Bitcoin to be sent to them before they would consider releasing victims from the Cellmate contraption.
The CellMate 2 is yet to go into manufacturing.
