Claim: In a rare phenomenon called penis captivus, a man becomes stuck inside a woman when her vaginal muscles suddenly clamp down. Sometimes the man is unable to withdraw even after he loses his erection, requiring a trip to the emergency room to separate the couple.
Origins: Medical experts disagree about
whether the phenomenon known as penis captivus is real. Although there have been sporadic reports of allegedly real cases, many specialists feel that vaginal spasms severe enough to cause penis captivus are extremely unlikely, and that the male partner would be able to withdraw his penis once it was sufficiently relaxed. An oft-cited medical journal report of an actual case of penis captivus , published in 1884, was a hoax.
On 4 December 1884, the Philadelphia Medical News published an account of a case of penis captivus from Pentonville, England, submitted by one Egerton Y. Davis. The account was in fact a fabrication, submitted under a pseudonym by Sir William Osler, a member of the Medical News ‘ editorial board. Osler’s colleague, Theophilus Parvin, had just written and published an anonymous article about vaginismus (a painful, spasmodic contraction of the vagina), and Osler apparently felt that Parvin had used his pull as a board member to publish an article about a trifle of no real importance to the general medical community. Osler decided to embarrass Parvin by writing a phony letter under his “Egerton Y. Davis” pseudonym and having it mailed to the Medical News from Montreal. Osler’s correspondence was printed in the 4 December 1884 issue of Philadelphia Medical News , and it has since been cited numerous times as an actual case report of penis captivus by those unaware of the hoax.
Sightings: A brief mention is made of this legend in the 1998 film Urban Legend . You’ll find this legend in the 1983 Jackie Collins novel Hollywood Wives as well.
Additional Information: The following articles, taken from various medical journals, discuss the hoax perpetrated by Sir William Osler and the phenomenon of penis captivus.

The name says it all. "Penis captivus" is the medical term for when the penis is essentially held captive by the vagina during sexual intercourse. It gets stuck, neither partner can separate the bond, and this is not a myth. But for as terrifying as it sounds, does its severity really live up to the hype?
The idea of a penis getting stuck in a vagina might bring to mind the 2007 film Teeth , a comically absurd horror film about a teen girl whose vagina houses teeth — described in folk tales as vagina dentata — which sever every unknowing man’s member, especially when he’s committed a wrong (in her mind). Thankfully, penis captivus isn’t as gruesome, as common, or as serious.
“When the penis is within the vagina, it becomes increasingly engorged,” Dr. John Dean, clinical director of gender and sexual medicine for the Devon Partnership NHS Trust in southwest England, recently told BBC Health Check . “The muscles of the woman’s pelvic floor contract rhythmically at orgasm… While those muscles contract, the penis becomes stuck and further engorged within [the vagina] until the muscles relax. Blood can flow out of the penis again, the penis starts to go down after orgasm, and the man can withdraw.” He also noted that the rhythmic contractions a woman experiences during an orgasm aren’t spasms — these usually characterize vaginismus , which can cause vaginal spasms so strong and painful that the vagina closes, according to the National Institutes of Health .
The fascination with penis captivus, Dean said, is the “prospect of a couple struggling to separate themselves for many minutes.” But he says that in his own experience, on the rare occasions that he’s heard of it, it only happens for a few seconds — between five and 10. Long enough that “if you’re in that situation that probably seems like an eternity.”
Although Dean passes penis captivus off as a mild occurrence, there have been reports of more severe cases, however, the condition is already so rare. Only a handful have been reported in the past century, and many were dismissed because they were “based on hearsay” with a “tenuous connection” to the “actual facts,” Dr. F. Kraupl Taylor, a physician, wrote in a 1979 article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) . But of the cases that he speaks about, he mentions a “more or less credible instance” from 1910, in which a pair found themselves stuck, and in “intense pain,” from attempts to separate. It wasn’t until the woman was given chloroform, which was once used as an anesthetic, that her vagina was able to release the man’s penis.
Another physician’s response to Taylor was published in BMJ in 1980. Dr. Brendan Musgrave’s letter spoke about a personal experience that occurred in 1947. At the time, Musgrave was a houseman at the Royal Isle of Wight County Hospital in south England, when a honeymoon couple was brought out of an ambulance “on a single stretcher.” The woman was also given anesthetic, and the couple were discharged.
Penis captivus occurs more frequently in animals than it does in humans, Dean said. And it’s not uncommon to see animals that “are stuck together after sex, particularly dogs … and people look on with bemusement.” If there was to be a more notable, severe case in humans that necessitated intervention or admission to a hospital, Taylor wrote, “it would have been eagerly reported in a medical journal with as much evidence and detail as possible.”

Over the weekend, we told you about an Italian couple who reportedly started having sex in the Mediterranean Sea and finished in the ER, because their genitals wouldn't disunite . It sounds outlandish -- hell, we can barely figure out the physics of intercourse in the bathtub -- but there's an actual medical explanation for it. And the basic concept is pretty much this:
It's caused by a vaginal spasm, and apparently in the Italian couple's case, the water added a significant increase in suction. We asked Dr. Yvonne Fulbright -- formerly Astroglide's go-to sexologist, who now has her own line of products -- to pull us in and grip us with her knowledge...
Penis captivus started as an urban legend a long, long time ago
"Just hearing the term 'penis captivus' can have one shuddering," says Dr. Fulbright. "Penis captivus is an idea that started in medieval times. People feared that the penis could get 'sucked into' the vagina during the missionary position, possibly forever."
Legit medical studies have found evidence to support the theory
"While largely hearsay, and chalked up mostly as mythical, an article published in a 1979 issue of the British Medical Journal claims that penis captivus has occurred very rarely throughout history. Apparently, a handful of couples have gotten locked inseparably during sexual intercourse. This is actually pretty common [between] dogs."
Unless you're a dog, it's unlikely you'll ever experience this -- you have a better chance of winning the lottery -- but just in case, here's some advice...
"Should you ever find this actually happening, then both you and your lover need to relax and take the focus off of intercourse and anything sexy. This allows blood to leave the penis, so that he can withdraw more easily. And her pelvic floor muscles will also relax, as not to clench the shaft."
In other words, guys, for once in your life, you should think about baseball to make intercourse last shorter .
