“I think, just in regards to the sexual things, the fellatio was hardest,” said Charlotte Gainsbourg, of shooting Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Vol. I , which is in theaters next week and available on iTunes now. “Because it’s very intimate, and there was something quite humiliating about the whole thing,” she added, at the U.S. premiere on Thursday. Gainsbourg was quick to clarify that in that scene, she was, in fact, acting: “Not on a real dick,” she said, laughing. They hired stunt doubles—porn actors—to perform the sex scenes in the film.
Von Trier is known to put his female actors through challenges, but that doesn’t seem to deter them. “The actresses usually love to work with him,” said Stellan Skarsgård, who co-stars.
There is a poster for Nymphomaniac in which the actors were required to strip naked, and make a face as though they were having an orgasm. The tag line reads, “Show us your ‘O’ face.” Gainsbourg did not enjoy doing that photo shoot. “The photographer was very sweet,” she explained, “but he wasn’t Lars, and to go that far, just pretending an orgasm, without Lars, was suddenly awkward.”
Skarsgård has done eight projects with von Trier including Melancholia (2011) and says that his male roles are just not as good as the female roles. “He promised me that this one would be the best male role he’s ever written. And I said to him, ‘Well, that doesn’t mean much, you know.’” It was also quite demanding. “Me and Charlotte had about 90 pages of text,” Skarsgård said. “It’s so much dialogue, it was really hard.”
He thought the “‘O’ face” photo shoot was funny. “You laugh a lot. I mean, you’re asked to take off your clothes and pretend that you’re coming,” Skarsgård said. “Actually, it was the second coming they got.”
“It was an . . . interesting photo shoot, for sure,” said Christian Slater. “Take your clothes off and, you know, give us your best sexual face, or what you think you might look like in that particular moment,” he said. “And, I thought it was very sexy. I liked it.” Did he rehearse? “I’ve been rehearsing my whole life, are you kidding?” Slater said, laughing.
Uma Thurman, Emmy Rossum, John Cameron Mitchell, Gillian Anderson, Gina Gershon, and Michael Shannon took in the screening at MoMA, and then headed to an after-party, hosted by Interview and Absolut Elyx, at the new Butter, in Midtown.
