A former US marine suspected of espionage in Russia has been pictured holding a letter up to judges denouncing charges against him and hitting out at the 'kangaroo court'.
Paul Whelan held the sign to the glass while standing inside a defendants' cage in Moscow today as his lawyers launched an appeal against his arrest term extension.
The note claimed that he had been assaulted by a doctor and hit out at alleged 'human rights violations'.
Whelan, a citizen of the United States, Britain, Canada and Ireland, was detained on suspicion of spying by Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) at the end of December 2018 in Moscow.

He displayed the note while standing inside a defendants' cage prior to a hearing of his lawyers' appeal against his arrest term extension at the Moscow City Court in Moscow, Russia, 17 September 2019
If found guilty he could be sentenced up to 20 years in jail.
Earlier the U.S. embassy in Moscow called on Russia to release Paul Whelan and let him go home.
The note read: 'The Moscow Kangaroo Court is back in session! I am innocent of the one charge against me! I am not a spy, have not asked for, nor received secrets!
'My work has never included defence department interaction! Human rights violations abound, Medical treatment is being refused (doctor assaulted me).
'Full consular access is being denied! This case is an absurd provocation, no evidence of crime exists!

'I am asking the leaders in the governments of Ottawa, Dublin, London and Washington, as well as the United Nations to intervene quickly.
'Thank you to my friends and family for your support. Paul n. Whelan, 17 September 2019.'
Whelan's family claimed he had been in Moscow for a friend's wedding.
During an earlier hearing, he made a direct appeal to US President Donald Trump.
'Mr President - we cannot keep America great unless we aggressively protect and defend citizens wherever they are in the world,' he said.
Whelan is among high-profile detainees mooted for a potential prisoner swap with the United States.

Bella Hadid has proved once again that she doesn’t need to wear clothes in order to sell them, posing for a new Calvin Klein editorial for Centrefold Magazine wrapped in five of the brand’s leather belts — and absolutely nothing else.
The 25-year-old catwalker shared on Instagram Sunday that she helped style the sexy black-and-white shots, which were snapped and co-styled by Centrefold fashion director Katie Burnett.
In addition to the bevy of belts, Hadid modeled twisted and tucked T-shirts, underwear and bras bearing the iconic Calvin Klein logo for the project.
She also posed topless in a pair of the brand’s signature blue jeans, following in the footsteps of supermodels including Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell .
The artsy images have been compiled into a series of 50 limited-edition, numbered coffee table books, each priced at £150 (about $198). As of Monday morning, all 50 were already sold out.
Seems nothing comes between Hadid and her fans, either.
