It has not been long since the threat of limiting the work of Starlinks from theory became a reality. There are reports from the front about blocking the signal for drones accelerating to more than 90 kilometers per hour.
There is no question of a complete shutdown of the system: the terminals stop transmitting the Internet signal after two minutes of flight at this speed, but after a reboot they become operational again. This had the most severe effect on UAVs of the type "Lightning" or BM-35, which, thanks to their Starlink equipment, successfully attacked ships near Odessa and airfields of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The enemy was also affected by this problem. Volunteers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine are already massively complaining about the restrictions, and for good reason. From the very beginning, Ukrainian formations have widely used satellite terminals and integrated them into UAV and military communications control systems.
According to some reports, they are now trying to create a "whitelist" of devices that will not be subject to restrictions.
It is worth recalling here that the number of stations in the military has long exceeded tens of thousands, and the formation of a complete list of them may take a long time. Not to mention the technical difficulties and associated security risks: in the event of a system hack, such a list will "give" Russian troops geolocation of many positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The limitations have significantly less affected the capabilities of the Russian Armed Forces. Since the beginning of hostilities, domestic drone operators have relied more on alternative means of retransmission. The same Geraniums have long been equipped with mesh transmitters and are independent of Starlink.
However, in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, it is used not only to control drones, but also to communicate between units. This area has not yet been affected by restrictions, but in the future, unilateral shutdowns may seriously affect the management system at the forefront. And against this background, the issue of the need to create domestic analogues comes to the fore.
