Pellet penetration test
Pellet penetration test
This month, Bob Sterne talks about airgun pellet penetration. In this article he will give some answers about why pellets perform the way they do.

A selection of 177 caliber airgun pellets were fired across two velocity ranges into ten-percent ballistic gelatin and the resulting impact velocities, penetration depths and bullet expansion was recorded. Ten-percent ballistic gelatin is the United States industry-standard media for static ballistic gelatin testing. Static gelatin testing is mentioned in contrast to dynamic gelatin testing ...
22 Pellet Penetration Test Pellets: Crosman Premier Domed 14.3gr | Crosman Premier Pointed 14.3gr | Daisy Precision Max Pointed 14.0gr Pellets were fired from the Crosman 1322 and the Chinese B3 rifle. The Crosman 1322 is shooting 14.3 gr pellets at a max 8.42 FPE, and the Chinese B3 at about 4.5 FPE. Pellets were shot through two cardboad panels, into 3/8″ plywood, at 5 yards. At 8.42 FPE ...
Here is a pdf of a penetration test of various .177 cal pellets shot into homemade ballistic gel. The gel recipe was a super concentrated Knox unflavored gelatin, poured into a 12 x 6 x 3 plastic storage box.

The Magnum pellet, with its pointed tip and double ring design, aims for increased penetration and mushrooming, but the effectiveness of this design compared to dedicated hunting pellets requires user testing.
i test my pellets (talon ss with 18 inch barrels) into frozen blocks of cream cheese at ten yards. i charge to 2700. the crosman premere h/p's are good and dont separate, but dont expand much more than a standard c/p will either. i made a nice offhand shot with one the other day at a starling up top of a tree at about 65 yds, took his head clean off!!! but on super small shit like sparrows ...

Airgun hunters want airgun pellet penetration. The more penetration the better for a one shot kill. But do lighter, faster pellets give better penetration?

Do I need to test for the best pellet in a lower-powered air rifle (5 to 10 foot-pounds), a middle-powered air rifle (11 to 18 foot-pounds), a high-powered air rifle (19 to 30 foot-pounds) and a mega-powered air rifle (above 31 foot-pounds)?
Just wondering what different materials you guys use to test the penetration & expansion capabilities of pellets to ensure penetration of a skull when selecting a pellet for hunting. I have a AT44-10 in .177 I've been working on for a friend to gain some power & he'll wanna see some results when he comes to collect it later.
Pellet Penetration, Air guns, Airgun Forum If you used energy instead of velocity, the result would be a parabola, since you square the velocity to get the energy.... For a given projectile you need to double the velocity to double the penetration, which increases the energy by 4 times.... If you think about it, using the Sectional Density and Velocity is the same as using the Momentum and ...
Airgun pellet penetration test - JSB Hades vs JSB Exact Can the shape of your airgun pellets really make a difference to stopping power? There's only one way to find out, and that's to carry out a ballistic wax test. The results will reveal how far a pellet penetrates, as well as the size and shape of the channel it makes in the wax.
Knife, been using wet books for flesh penetration test and dry books for bone penetration test. Pellets get mangled pretty good but stay together and by peeling of the pages you get a very good Idea.
Just a quick comparison between two of my springers. Kinda neat to see how two different approaches to airgun calibers perform in the real world.

Pellet penetration: they can go deeper than you think! May 25, 2007 by Tom Gaylord (B.B. Pelletier) ↓ 25 comments
Interesting results. I do two types of penetration tests. One is in layers of 1/4 MDF that are separated so I can tell how far each pellet penetrated. This test is for penetration of an animals skull. For small game I want to see at least one 1/4 inch layer. Many of my airguns will shoot through two and one, my 25 Avenger, will shoot through 3.
The pellets inside the Fiocchi spread out more than the pellets of the other 12 gauge 00-buck round in the test. Combine this with the fact that all the pellets sailed through our block of ballistics gel, and I'd look to the FliteControl round first for a home defense shotgun ammo.
In this video I give and overview of the pellets and then determine, which pellet has the best penetration into meat (sliced ham to be precised). I also check pellet deformity post shooting.
This is a ballistics test of some of the many 177 pellets on the market, some with very large claims. In part 1 I check out penetration by shooting into ballistic gel from Clear Ballistics.
Conclusions.... Generally speaking, from the same gun, heavier pellets of similar shape penetrate deeper.... There appears to be little difference in penetration between round nose (including the Crosman Premier HP) and pointed pellets of similar weight....

The research involved taking X-rays and necropsies of some 26,000 North American ducks, geese, pheasants, doves, quail, and turkeys to study pellet penetration and striking phenomena.

The results were surprising to say the least with the addition of the hide reducing penetration by about 25% and the final expansion of the pellets was less than the bare gelatin testing previously done.
The penetration level depends on the distance and velocity of the BB gun. Cardboard is a common material used in packages - thin and vulnerable to BB gun penetration. The depth of penetration depends on the cardboard's thickness. Paper is another example of a thin surface that can be penetrated by a BB gun, without much damage or deformation.
Here is the table of the 50 yard penetration data, showing shot type, the page number of each pellet found, total count of pellets found, total number of pages penetrated by all pellets and the average number of pages penetrated for each shot type.

I decided to try my hand at testing an assortment of pellets I have on hand in some ballistic gelatin. I always wondered to the validity of statements made by different pellet manufacturers about "penetration", or "expansion", or "hyper velocity" and decided the only way to get conclusive facts is to test on my own.
Just for giggles I used a Grainger master catalog to test my Hatsan Torpedo. Got the pellets 650 to 700 pages deep with pages torn almost to 900. 10 yards with AA field heavies ( 10.34gr ) . That seems pretty decent to me.
My P35-22 gets to 32 fpe with it's preferred 21 grain pellet and it will only shoot through 1/2 inch of plywood. 22 will penetrate a bit better than a 25 caliber but 1000 fps is not very practical for a pellet either. If 32 won't even get close, 34 isn't going to make it. I don't test in solid wood because it is so variable.
Most shooters consider the FBI's ammo-testing protocol the gold standard regarding the evaluation of handgun ammunition for self-defense.
There will be some blood in this video. Viewers discretion is advised. There are many videos of airgunners shooting clay, gel, fruit, and meat in order to get an idea of pellet impact and expansion.

More tests ahead These are not the only new pellets I have to test. What I want is a standardized procedure for testing pellets that reaches beyond just shooting hem in as test airgun. Summary I am asking you for your thoughts on how best to test new pellets. I want to add things that haven't been done before.

It is the adjusted sectional density that suggests penetration levels and resultant lethality of a pellet. The weight of a #2 steel pellet is .0005022 lb. A #4 lead pellet is actually lighter at .0004629 lb. The corrected sectional density reveals that #4 lead is more lethal at .0174 vs. .0150 for #2 steel.
