It’s a common but unpleasant event that most of us put out of our minds when we’re not faced with it: Using a public restroom that is, shall we say, less than hygienic. Let’s face it; there are few things more disgusting than having to brave the port-a-potty at a music festival. Coming in a close second is a gas station toilet on a road trip. Public restrooms at busy big-box stores also tend to be scary places.
This is where female urinary devices, also known as FUDs, or female pee device, can really save the day. These items are a well-kept secret of female campers because they let you go #1 without having to drop your pants completely. The pink Freshette is described as the “original urinary director” for women. It measures 6 by 1.75 by 6 inches and is about the size of the palm of your hand. The Sports and Travel Freshette comes with a 5-inch extension tube that stores inside the main plastic trough, and a custom travel pouch. This item is sold in camping supply stores like REI. Interestingly, it’s also used on most major Antarctic Expeditions. I can imagine that indoor plumbing must be hard to come by in the Antarctic!

The makers of the lily-shaped Whiz Freedom say that their purple FUD is the world’s first antibacterial and hydrophobic urine director. In the UK, it’s available by NHS prescription and also for private purchase. The Whiz Freedom is registered as a medical device in the EU and is FDA-approved in the USA.
This product is made from medical-grade thermoplastic that is infused with antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial agents. It is also “self-cleansing” since it repels liquids. It measures about 6 inches long and 3.75 inches wide at its widest. Carry bags are available for purchase separately.
The Whiz Freedom has been clinically tested on over 1,400 women and shown to be easy to use and leakfree. It’s been available since 2004 and works in the same way as other pee funnels: hold it in place and go.

The Pibella is a patented, trademarked FUD that’s made in Switzerland. It is CE-certified and FDA-approved. It is designed with a smaller opening than many other funnels to completely and efficiently encase the flow area for easy and leak-free use. It’s about 7 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.
The Pibella is made from non-irritating polypropylene, which is recyclable. It’s meant to be cleaned under running water, and it can also be boiled when you want to sterilize it. Since it’s water-repellent, even if you’re in a situation where you’re unable to rinse it off, you can just give it a good shake, and it will be nearly completely dry.

This lavender-colored pee funnel is made from medical-grade silicone that’s resistant to moisture and germs, and you can also buy it in a camouflage color scheme. If you want to dispose of this after use, you can. However, this item is made to be reusable although it is not recyclable. Simply clean with soap and water after use, and allow it to air dry.
The GoGirl is made with a patented splash guard so you won’t have to deal with leakage or overflow during use. The company recommends practicing once or twice before you can expect an entirely leak-free experience. To use, hold the GoGirl against your body to form a seal. Take aim and go.
To store the GoGirl, fold it and place it into the GoGirl tube that comes with each product. It’s recommended to also keep a clean tissue inside the tube with your GoGirl.

The SheWee has been available since 2003 and is marketed as the original female urination device. According to their website, one is sold every three minutes somewhere around the world. The SheWee is made from polypropylene, a type of plastic that can be recycled and is NATO-approved for use by women in the military. It measures about 6.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.
Available colors include: Power pink, Pure white, Pace NATO green, Bright blue, Black, Freedom purple, Desert sandand Aqua.
They also offer the SheWee Extreme, $19.38, that includes a carrying case and an extension tube. The extension tube helps make sure that the flow is directed away from your feet. It’s appreciated by people who are wearing bulky clothes.

The pStyle is a urinary diversion device that’s kind of shaped like a taco. It’s made from rigid, BPA- and phthalate-free plastic. It’s about 1.5 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches long. The pStyle is available in an assortment of colors, including: Blue, Clear, Purple, Green, Black and Pink
Use the pStyle by placing the widest part between your legs and under your flow area, a.k.a. your urethra. Aim the open side down slightly and go. When you’re done going, lift the pStyle upwards to catch any remaining drops. Some users describe this as the “squeegee technique.” You shouldn’t need to use any toilet paper when you use this product as instructed.

The pStyle is made to be reusable and can be simply rinse with water or cleaned with soap and water. If you’re in an area where you don’t have access to water, such as in the outdoors, the manufacturers recommend that you shake the pStyle vigorously to get rid of most of the urine. You can also use wipes, like Lysol wipes, to clean it. The pStyle can be recycled since it’s made from #2 plastic.

The LadyP looks so much like an everyday funnel. Be careful that your boyfriend doesn’t accidentally use it to put oil in his car. That said, it is specially designed for use as a pee funnel, with a rounded edge for comfort and a loop-style handle to make it easier to hold during use. It uses flexible, medical-grade silicone and doesn’t contain any latex, phthalates or BPAs. It’s about 4 inches tall, 2.5 inches wide and 6 inches long.
After use, rinse it with water and soap. You can also boil it occasionally for sterilization.

Lady J (Attachment for the Little John Portable Urinal). The LadyJ is made from “unbreakable” plastic and has to be used with the Little John portable urinal. The Little John typically sells for $14.99 and is a collection device that’s designed to be used by men. It looks a lot like an ergonomically designed, opaque plastic bottle. When you add the LadyJ, women can use it too.
The Pee Pocket is made from a thin cardboard material that is waterproof and works like a funnel. It does not absorb any liquid. Pee Pockets are white with a turquoise floral pattern printed onto them and are stored flat. You pop them open to form a funnel, hold them in place and “go.” They come with disposable, hygienic wipes to use on yourself. The Pee Pocket is angled to fit closely against the body, and the smart trifold design opens up to form the funnel.
The Stand Up is marketed as a “cute” triangular pee funnel that’s got a hot pink color and silver lettering. This female urinary device was created by a Stanford graduate so that women could experience the convenience of peeing while standing up. To use this item, unfold the top, squeeze the sides to pop it open into a funnel shape, hold it in place and go. When you’re done, simply throw it away. The Stand Up is biodegradable.
This item is being heavily marketed to music festival attendees who would rather not sit on a disgusting porta potty. The founder of the company admits this isn’t the first item of its kind, but she’s hoping it’s the first one that will go mainstream due to its stylish kite-shaped design.

Travel John manufactures and sells “disposable urinals” for men, and now they have created a product specifically for women. Travel Jane is, in fact, identical to the unisex Travel John except it comes in pink. Use a Travel Jane whenever you don’t have a traditional or clean place to go. You can go ANYWHERE when you have this product because it has a spill-proof, leak-proof bag that is filled with an absorbent “liquigel” material to capture liquid. The bag is made from a weaveless fabric that is biodegradable.
To use this item, you just place the ergonomically designed plastic “collar” against your body and go. All liquid is trapped inside the bag and solidifies into a mess-proof gel within 5 to 10 seconds. This product was developed to help women avoid coming into contact with germs in public restrooms. The PeeBuddy is yellow-green in color with white lettering, and it is made from coated, waterproof paper. They are folded flat, making them easy to carry with you. To use, press on the sides to pop this item open to form a funnel. You don’t even need to drop your panties to use this. Per the company’s instructions, just move your panties aside, put the PeeBuddy in place under the “flow area” and go. Then throw away this single use item.

The P-Mate is a disposable cardboard device that works like a funnel. It’s coated with a fine layer of wax to make it water resistant. This item can help you “stand” to go in places you usually can’t stand to go! Get it?
P-Mates are white with black-and-pink lettering, and they kind of resemble paper airplanes ready to take flight. They are about 9 inches long and 2 inches wide. They fold down the middle so they can lay flat to be carried in a pocket or purse. Ideally, store it in a zip-lock bag so when you’re done using it, you can store it in the bag until you have a chance to dispose of it. This item should never be flushed.
The P-Mate is described as a “urine-directing device.” It’s designed to fit against the female body. Like most pee funnels, you use it by placing it over your body. Aim it downwards, and go. Throw it in the trash or recycle after use.

Typically, if you only need a pee funnel for a one-time event, like a sporting event, camping trip or visit abroad, buying a disposable pack is probably the way to go. However, if you are planning to use your pee funnel at home because of a medical condition, such as bad knees, then a reusable item would be the smarter choice since you can just wash it and reuse and save money over time.

A drawback of the Go-Girl is the small opening at the tip…makes it back up and spill out the back unless you are careful to pee slowly. The solution I found is just to cut off the very top where it restricts the flow…voila! I now have a funnel that sends all the pee forward, instead of partly down my leg!

I wish there was a device designed for us larger ladies – something with a mirror and a long handle perhaps? and maybe a larger cup part too. Gosh – I never thought I’d be thinking along the lines of fud design – but hey, who knows, it might be the start of a trend – thinking up new and improved designs!
i would personally call my self a connoisseur of female pee funnels, i am the self proclaimed ‘funnel master of England’. i dont think it matters that i am male. you dont need to know my methods but i would in my opinion the ‘Lady J ® Reusable Pee Funnel’ is the best. for the price point you cannot go wrong only $9.95.

The Travel Jane (actually, Travel John) is an excellent option for women when we can’t get to a restroom (or if you don’t want to use a public restroom/porta potty). I’ve had to hold a full bladder many times on long car trips, and I’ve recently been using the Travel John if I have to go real bad. It can be a bit challenging to pull pants down in the car, especially if behind the wheel, but then I just position it and slowly urinate (its best to pee slowly or in spurts if you can to give the gel time to absorb). It is of course more cumbersome if you are not alone in the car, but what I do is to cover my lap with a towel or something, lower my pants, position from underneath the covering and then pee slowly into it. I think anyone (men, women, children) could benefit from using the Travel John in the car. It allows you to relieve that discomfort and urgency if you have to urinate really bad.
Soft, squishy FUDs are a poor choice for when you aren’t dropping your pants: clothing can cause the device to flex.
The shewhee requires precision placement: not easy to do when you have to go pee urgently, when wearing multiple layers (winter activities), or wearing a climbing harness.
the PStyle is a firm plastic so it’s easier to get through layers of winter clothes and easy to get it firmly pressed again the body for a good seal.
Not sure why it’s so far down the list when it has some of the higher ratings here? It’s got a great simple and easier to clean design with it’s open top.
Agree totally! After a few failure and leaks, I go back to my holy self-made system – cutting normal 1.25L+ drinks bottle. Sturdy, does the trick, easy to hold and insert, no back firing & don’t feel too bad putting them into recycling collection after enough wear and tear (of course wash thoroughly before that!!!)
