After over five decades of male actors flying the TARDIS, Jodie Whittaker was announced as the first female incarnation of the beloved sci-fi/adventure figure Doctor Who. Whittaker will be taking over for Peter Capaldi after he makes his last hurrah in this year’s Christmas special. And though the online backlash to the notion of a female Doctor was both swift and predictable, a handful of British publications have sunk to a new low.
The Sun paired a derisive editorial about Whittaker with a collection of nude screen-captures from her previous work, including the 2006 Oscar-nominated film Venus. The Sun ’s Adam Postans wrote via editorial: “It is frankly nauseating that the [BBC] should now get on their sci-fi high horse and gallop into Right-Onsville to plonk a woman sheriff in town.” The editorial is regressive in its own right, but the decision from The Sun, the Mail Online, and more to pore over Whittaker’s filmography for out-of-context stills of the actress in a state of undress is in even worst taste.

Though we’re less than 48 hours out from Whittaker’s big announcement, there has already been backlash to the backlash . Equal Representation for Actresses (E.R.A.), a campaign group, issued a statement per The Guardian : “We are delighted by the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. However, we are surprised and disappointed by the Daily Mail [Mail Online is owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust] and The Sun ’s reductive and irresponsible decision to run a story featuring pictures of Jodie in various nude scenes.”
Whittaker herself was prepared for some manner of outrage associated with her casting. In her very first post-announcement interview with the BBC, Whittaker said : “I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”
The Sun ’s Postans isn’t the first person to get up in arms about diverse casting on Doctor Who. But the critics who bang on about what Postans refers to as ”self-important virtue signalling” often forget the original and very diverse creative team behind Doctor Who.
Verity Lambert was the show’s original producer (essentially the show-runner) in the early 1960s. She brought on British-Indian Waris Hussein to direct the pilot and several episodes of the first season. “They must have thought you were so . . . radical,” “new” Who show-runner Russell T. Davies told Lambert in a 2006 interview . “I just imagine everyone else at the time were middle-aged men wearing demob suits! You were wild, you lot! A 26-year-old woman, a gay Asian director . . . they must have thought you were bananas!”
The “bananas” legacy that started with Lambert continued on through Davies’s tenure. His popular 2005 reboot of Who, starring Christopher Eccleston, was a master class in color and gender-blind casting. Taking a cue from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future, Davies packed his episodes with characters of all different colors, races, and sexual orientations, eventually spinning off his pansexual, futuristic utopia into the series Torchwood. When Steven Moffat took over for Davies in 2010, the series took a minor step backwards—and Moffat grappled , at times, with a fandom eager to progress.
The show eventually got there in baby steps, with a splashy female Time Lord ( not the Doctor) played by ‎Michelle Gomez, some assertive feminist themes , and a non-white, non-straight companion for Capaldi, played this past season with effervescent charm by Pearl Mackie .
With Chris Chibnall taking over for Moffat and casting Whittaker, the show has taken a monumental leap forward. We shouldn’t forget, buried among all the negative toxicity, that Whittaker’s casting is bringing a lot of joy with it as well.

And Whittaker is not alone in facing this particular brand of backlash to joining a beloved, male-fronted sci-fi property. Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones had to grapple with similarly invasive backlash last year. It all proves, more clearly than ever, that we need more positive female pop-cultural role models like Whittaker’s Doctor to change years of entrenched gendered attitudes.

The blonde beauty, now 70, stripped off for the totally nude snaps as she got up, close and personal with one of The Doctor's greatest enemies: a Dalek.
Katy, who played the companion to John Pertwee's Doctor from 1971 to 1973, flashed her nipples as she posed strategically, only just managing to cover her modesty behind the plunger on the front of the alien.
Dressed in nothing but a pair of racy knee-high sparkly boots for the eye-popping snaps, the actress flaunted her slender curves and enviably toned midriff as she caressed the Dalek.
In one jaw-dropping picture, she straddled the protruding limb of the iconic foe, barely concealing her intimate parts as she cupped her bare breasts and struck a sultry pose.
Since her days as the Doctor's sidekick Joe Grant, Katy has continued to be a part of the fictional world of the BBC sci-fi favourite, reprising her role in 2010 for an appearance in the fourth series of CBBC's Doctor Who spin-off, The Sarah jane Adventures.
She also went on to land roles in Target, Casualty and 2012 movie Run for your Wife, starring Danny Dyer and ex-Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding.
The British-born actress and mother-of-two moved to Australia in 1979 and is now an Australian citizen.
She later returned to the UK in 2009 and currently resides in London.
Earlier this week, she tweeted her joy at the announcement of the 13th Doctor as Broachurch star Jodie Whittaker, 35.
After Jodie was named the first ever female to take on the iconic role, Katy told her 25,000 followers: "I am thrilled #JodieWhittaker DW13 a fine actress and a great gig."
She added: "12 actors have given their superb magic touch to creating their Doctors and I feel 13 will be a corker good on you @ChrisChibnall."
