As part of a broad strategy to secure domestically produced crude oil, Phillips 66 PSX signed an agreement with Magellan Midstream to access the oil coming out of the Mississippi Lime. Ponca City is located very close to the Mississippi Lime, which is ideal for keeping transportation costs…. Hodgeman and Ness Counties in West Kansas are among the most productive areas in terms of cumulative volumes produced. The two Counties have produced to date a total of million barrels of oil from many hundreds of vertical wells. Two thirds of total production has been from the Miss Lime formation. As it appears, the reason why the Hodgeman and Ness have been so productive is that the reservoir in this area is not nearly as 'tight' as in some other locations. Kansas activity did not meet expectations. There are a significant number of players in the Mississippi Lime. This is not surprising given the large number of acres in play. The map above indicates where specific leaseholds are located. Chesapeake, SandRidge, Devon, and Range Resources RRC all have acreage around the Nemaha Ridge. It could soon be a Mississippian pure play as it plans to divest its Permian acreage in the Central Basin Platform. This could be a good acquisition for a company like Occidental OXY or Apache APA. Sandridge provides two other way to invest in the Mississippian, with its Sandridge Mississippian Trust I SDT and Sandridge Mississippian Trust II SDR. In southern Comanche, SandRidge has drilled most actively in what has proven to be a prolific natural gas sweet spot where, as of November , the company had brought on production at least 20 horizontals. Another evaluation area is located about ten miles to the east where at least 9 operated horizontals were producing as of November The slide also summarizes key parameters of its year-end type curve which estimates average recovery per well across the entire PUD inventory at , barrels of oil, 64, barrels of NGLs and 1. The picture below depicts the possible strata of oil development in the Mid-Continent. Oil can possibly be developed from all of these play zones, although the depth and viability of each will vary with geography. This provides for a terrific development opportunity in the Mid-Continent; and the testing of many of these zones for viability has only been done in the last two years. In fact, many zones need much more testing. SandRidge Energy has built its entire future on the Mississippian Lime where it has acquired more than 1. SandRidge Energy is quite possibly sitting on more areas of pay than previously thought and is now exploring the other zones in and around the part of the Mississippian that it has primarily been targeting. Initial tests of those additional zones have produced encouraging results. This stacked pay potential encompasses up to 5 zones over much of its acreage that could materially increase the resource potential. The above slide below shows these stacked pay zones. So what happened in West Kansas? Intuitively, areas with higher densities of green dots should correlate with greater hydrocarbon charge in the Miss Lime formation. It is no surprise that several operators, including SD and ECA, leased significant acreage positions - typically at low cost - in areas that were seen as potentially prolific based on historical well results. SandRidge may not be in a position to spend much capital or effort on advancing the play in this area either, given the ongoing strategic review at the company and potential drastic capex reductions that may follow. Even before the agreement with TPG-Axxon was announced, it seemed that SandRidge might be shifting focus to the more proven southern part of the play as a result of the disappointing tests in the Extension area. The Mississippi Lime maintains a foot depth while the Bakken varies from feet in west Williams County to feet in northeast McKenzie. Bakken well costs are some of the highest in the United States, while the Mississippi Lime is one of the cheapest excluding disposal well costs. The company is backing away from exploring much further north into Kansas as it already has the potential to drill 3, wells within its core acreage. Apache APA , who has leased a massive position in the Extension area, has kept its profile in the play low.
