I just wanted to express my love for dear, sweet Paula, who has my single favorite arc of any Challenge player. Constantly in the majority alliance only to consistently get screwed over at the last minute, yet still so pathologically loyal that the next season she would team up with the very same people who screwed her over before just to get screwed again. It seemed like she would always be the one who came up short, until she was paired with her nemesis Evelyn, and was finally able to show she was actually a really good competitor and finally got that elusive first win. Her second win with Emily was just icing on the cake. I hope she's enjoying her retirement, but the Challenge just isn't the same without her. Am I the only one who adores this woman?
I like Paula but she was such a follower, always on the side that I just can't bring myself to root for. The way she went at Cara for no reason other than because her friends were and then couldn't take it when Laurel throws her shit back at her, I really don't respect people like that. The fact that she kept following the same people who screwed her over and over and over... I do think she is a good person and it sounds like she's grown a lot in time. I just want to yell at her through my screen to think for herself because I know she can be pretty cool when she does.
this is what i always think of if i am reminded of Paula. The disgusting way she bullied Cara, and then cried like a baby when the tables got turned, always got me pissed.
I never liked that she expected to skate through on her alliances and never get thrown into elimination. Overall though I did enjoy her commentary and feel she added to the show.
I think that's part of her tragic arc, which is 100% her fault, of course. But her extreme loyalty to her "friends" who never once hesitated to cast her aside in service of their own agenda is what makes me like her. Even though every time I watch it I want to reach into the TV and shake her.
She honestly didn't get as screwed as you think when you look back on it. It was a bit dirty that she wasn't in the boat on the Island, but at the end of the day she knew Dunbar was in the boat over her throughout the whole season and accepted that as okay. She wanted her alliance to screw over Evelyn, who apparently Paula was a bitch to all season, but that's not exactly betrayed. I see why she was upset about it, but it just wasn't really getting screwed over. She was never on their boat.
On The Duel 2 she was supposed to be Evan's number one, and part of that was working with the MJ/Landon/Brad alliance. She was so busy trying to also protect Dunbar and Ryan that she fucked over her position in the game to the point that Evan had to change partners. That was 100% on Paula.
Everyone got fucked over on that Vet G3 team for not winning despite actually winning.
I feel like she knew her only game in town was to hitch her ride to the stronger players. Sher rode it as far as she could, which was likely farther than she would have gotten on her own. Esp in the beginning when she lacked the confidence in herself.
The Island she did get screwed. Them taking Evelyn over her was a slap in the face, which Kenny acknowledged and admitted was one of his biggest regrets. I think if they had taken Dunbar over her she could have understood and lived with it. But taking Evelyn over her was Kenny sacrificing her for Johnny. And Johnny's piss poor gameplay put him in that position, so she paid for his dumb decisions.
Now Duel 2 was her fault, but once again it was a result of her loyalty. She felt loyal to Dunbar and made a bad decision.
I’m a huge JEK+D fan, but was never a Paula fan. I hated how she played victim on the Island when she helped cut the deal to make sure Johnny won. She was mad at Evan for not protecting her on Duel II but didn’t always vote in best interest. Was mad at Dunbar for not protecting her on Cutthroat when she voted to send him in first. Final straw was how she went at Cara then couldn’t handle it when Laurel fired back. Averageish competitor who got carried by two elite competitors to wins.
i remember not rooting for paula when i was younger, but she was always captivating television, and now when i look back, i really like her. i think you're right that she had the best character arc of anyone, even CT. if you haven't checked out her challenge mania interview, you really should, it's so refreshing hearing her perspective. she is very open about her real life struggles and how they affected her casting process. link to the podcast here.
I always considered Paula a meh cast member. But the night she went in on Cara and couldn't handle when Laurel brought it back will cement her legacy as a garbage person to me. I hope she has grown. Good riddance.
She really benefited from strong teammates in her later years. I always thought of her as worse, less nice Susie.
I don’t think anyone could be worse than Susie, who was a truly vile person. Her disgusting bullying of Tonya at her lowest point is just inexcusable. Paula at least was driven by loyalty and following the crowd. Susie was just a mean, cruel person who enjoyed hurting the less cool Challengers.
She didn't got screwed over, she followed people who saw her as a number on their alliance. Yet she kept going back to them, time after time. Her elimination record is really poor, if she would have been a actual strong competitor she could have made it to the final since her alliance carried her halfway already. But she simply wasn't good enough. Her only wins came when she got partnered up with 2 of the best female competitors of all time.
She was a hot mess early on and I loved her for it. Honestly was fascinating to watch her grow up and (mostly) out of it, and also fascinating to see that archetype evolve (devolve?) from Trishelle > Tonya > Paula > Camilla > Ashley M.
I rewatched Key West when it was put on FB Watch last year and it was amazing to see how Paula grew and changed from her Real World season to Rivals 2. Definitely one of the best/most underrated arcs on reality TV. She was consistently involved in politics/drama/hookups on any Challenge season she was on, and I found her commentary hilarious. I agree with u/NattyB that Paula's Challenge Mania interview is worth a listen. Hopefully D and Scott have her on again to talk about S35 (she still watches the show regularly) or have her at a Challenge Mania Live (maybe the next NYC show?).
She was such a mess on her Real World season and her speaking with a baby voice was so annoying.
I liked her on I3 and G3, but that was it. I kind of blame her for ushering in the "women kneeling to JEK" era.
When Paula first started out I couldn't stand her at all. It was very hard to like her. Then all of a sudden I couldn't stop rooting for her. She did a complete 180 with her personality and performance
