I live in the Historic Mill District. It is one of the best areas in Paterson. I don’t go out at night because I don’t feel safe. In the past several years, 2 people were shot and killed in our parking lot. A bodega owner around the block was shot and killed. A bodega owner across the street was attacked with a machete and someone else was stabbed to death. I also know of numerous muggings. I had my car stolen. Frequently, you see cars in the parking lot with their windows taped up because someone has broken in. In the parking lot you also see alcohol bottles, tiny plastic bags, used condoms and human feces.

I been living in Paterson for 9 years and its true it depends on the area. Nothing has ever happened to me and i drive and also walk, and i been through every area in the city. It mostly depends on who you hang out with, because most of the crimes that i seen are associated with two people that know each other. But what do you expect from such a populated city, and in some areas some people dont even care about their community. Its a good city to start a new life as a foreigner but tbh its not dangerous.

That's an interesting question and is dependent on which direction you enter from. If you come from the west you'll likely come from an area named Woodland Park (used to be West Paterson), if you enter from the N,S, or E, you'll notice the neighborhoods are separated by "ethnicity" and the stores are representative of such, kind of like NYC. As for special or unusual, not really, the third most populous town in NJ, had quite a crime rate and it's fair share of places you don't want to find yourself lost. Very few places are well known for good reasons, I know more bad reasons to go here or there then good.
